1. Derive the density of states function for longitudinal vibrational modes of the one dimensional linear
diatomic lattice assuming periodic boundary condition.

2. Show that the forbidden frequency region between the acoustic and optical branches of diatomic
lattice dispersion relation is of width

Where is constant and m , M are masses

3. Transverse waves propagate in a monatomic linear lattice in which the interatomic spacing is
2.7 x 10-10 m; the interatomic Hookes law constant for longitudinal motion is l = 20 N/m. The velocity
of transverse waves in the long wavelength limit is half that of longitudinal waves. Find the Transverse
Hookes law constant and the magnitude of equilibrium nearest-neighbour attractive force.

4. Using the one dimensional (1-D) Schrodinger equation, derive the expressions of quantized energy
states for (i) triangular well and (ii) parabolic well assuming that potential energy is given by
(i) U(z) = qz (where is the electric field inside the well) and (ii) U(z) = m*(2/2)z2, respectively.

5. The dispersion relation for electrons in the lowest allowed band of a one dimensional crystal is found
to be of the form , = + (1 ), b and C are constants.

(i) Find the effective mass for any allowed energy band (-<ka<+).
