Lab 4: Deleting and Erasing Data on Tapes

Deleting Tapes
A Delete operation is a logical operation that deletes the existence of the tape from the CommCell environment and
CommServe database. The delete operation will not physically erase any data and the tape does not need to be in the
library when it is deleted. This is also considered a non-destructive operation which means a tape can only be deleted if
no active jobs are currently retained on the tape. This means that the Delete option will not be available for tapes in the
Assigned Media group.

1. In the CommCell Browser, expand Storage Resources | Libraries | CommVault SL8500 4 | Media By
Groups.

2. Select Default Scratch group.

3. Right-click on a tape in the default scratch group and select All Tasks | Delete.
4. Review the Confirm Delete pop-up box and then click Yes.

NOTE: Tapes can only be deleted if there are no active jobs being retained on the tape. Tapes with
active jobs will be placed in the Assigned Media group where the option to delete a tape is not
available.

Delete Tape Contents

Delete Contents is a logical operation that automatically marks all jobs on a tape as aged. During a Delete Contents
operation a confirmation message appears and then the administrator must enter erase and reuse media. The
administrator will then be prompted to select the scratch group to which the tape will be moved. Data on the tape is
logically marked aged so the data can still be recovered up to the point where the tape is mounted and the OML header is
overwritten.

1. In the CommCell Browser, expand Storage Resources | Libraries | CommVault SL8500 4 | Media By
Groups.

2. Select Assigned Media group.

3. Right-click on a tape in the assigned media group and select All Tasks | Delete Contents.
4. In the Delete Content Warning !! pop-up box, review the warning message and then click Yes.
5. In the Enter Confirmation text pop-up box type erase and reuse media and then click OK.
6. In the Delete Contents and Move Media pop-up box select the Default Scratch pool and then click OK.

NOTE: The Delete Contents task is a destructive operation this will logically mark all jobs on the
tape aged and move the tape into a scratch pool.

Education Services Core Fundamentals Lab Guide January 2017

Erasing Tapes
Erase Media is a physical operation that will mount the tape and overwrite the OML header and optionally the entire
content. Once the header is overwritten data cannot be recovered using any method Commvault software provides. This
is considered a destructive operation so it cannot be performed on any tapes where jobs are actively being retained. The
option to erase media will be available in all logical groups except the Assigned Media group.

1. In the CommCell Browser, expand Storage Resources | Libraries | CommVault SL8500 4 | Media By
Groups.

2. Select the Default Scratch group.

3. Right-click on a tape in the default scratch group and select Options | Erase Spare Media.
4. Select Quick Erase and then click OK.

NOTE: Quick Erase erases the header of the tape. Full Erase overwrites the entire contents of the
tape.

5. In the Erase Media Warning!! pop-up box, review the information and then click Yes.
6. In the Job Controller tab, note the Erase Media operation.

Lab 2: Creating Secondary Copies

There are two types of secondary copies:
Synchronous

Selective

Synchronous Copy
A Synchronous Copy defines a secondary copy to synchronize protected data with a source copy. All valid data (jobs that
completed successfully) written to the source copy is copied to the synchronous copy via an update process called an
Auxiliary Copy operation. This means that all full, incremental, differential, transaction log, or archive jobs from a source
copy will be copied to the synchronous copy. Synchronous copies are useful when you want a consistent point-in-time
copy for any point within the cycle of all protected data available for restore.

Selective Copy
A Selective Copy allows automatic selection of specific full backups or manual selection of any backup for additional
protection. Selective copy options allow the time based automatic selection of: all, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly,
quarterly, half yearly, and/or yearly full backups. Advanced options allow you to generate selective copies based on a
frequency of number of cycles, hours, days, weeks, or months. You can also choose the Do Not Automatically Select
Jobs option which allows you to manually select jobs to copy to the Selective Copy.

Create a new secondary copy

1. In the CommCell Browser, expand Policies | Storage Policies.

2. Right-click on Simple Disk (CVMA-1) storage policy and from menu select All Tasks | Create New Copy.

Best Practice for your environment: Synchronous Secondary copies can be alternate source
copies for any other secondary copy in the storage policy. If a secondary copy is created, an auxiliary
copy job should be scheduled. Having an unscheduled secondary copy will affect retention on the
source copy.
