This month’s feature is on Larry Wilcox and why he Relays.

Why do I Relay? My story has been on the “back burner” for sometime, but I said to myself that I would write something
for the newsletter after the Kearney County Fair. So “Self”, here I am, I am ready to write my story about my fight with
bladder cancer. But today I have a second chapter to add to my story. I am star
ting to write my story, sitting in the hospital, waiting for the doctor to remove a malignant melanoma from my back.
This is why I Relay. In 1999 I had a cancerous tumor removed from by bladder. The
doctor thought everything looked okay after the removal, but wanted me to come in for a
checkup annually. In my second year of checkups the Doctor did not like the looks of
things, so I went through six weeks of treatments. Today I have an annual check up and
encourage everyone reading this newsletter the importance of following through with
your scheduled check up, no matter how often.
Having battled bladder cancer I am now getting acquainted with” Melanoma”. Mela-
noma is the most deadly form of skin cancer. Early detection is important because mela-
noma may spread to other parts of the body. I have an eight inch incision on my back
from the removal of a malignant melanoma.
The most common symptom in the early stages of melanoma is a change in the size,
shape, color, or feel of an existing mole. Many melanomas have a black or blue-black area. It may also show up as a new
mole. It may be black, abnormal, or ugly looking. Ole’ Self had all three.
Melanomas vary greatly in how they look. It is important to examine your skin regularly and to have skin exams by your
healthcare provider at routine checkups.
This is why I Relay. All of us have some story to tell about ourselves, family, and friends. Never take anything for granite.
Have regular check ups and let us work together to nip cancer in the butt. I will see you at the Relay on August 6th. No
matter what happens, each day is a new day!
You know they say that lots of germs are passed around on dollar bills. That isn’t true, nothing could live on a dollar to-
day. See you August 6th.
