Social Studies Standard:

3.SS.5.1.1 Explore connections that the local community has with other communities throughout the
world.
Objective/s: SWBAT write 5 questions accurately reflecting the content learned from the video and
answer the question intently with at least three questions about the students culture and themselves.

Vocabulary terms and definitions:

Culture: all the knowledge and values shared by a society.
Diversity: Various cultures of all differences.

Literacy Strategies: Making Connections (Text to Self), Summarizing, Asking questions

Technology Integration: The students will watch a video that explores different cultures and

Accommodations: For students who are struggling with reading and writing; I will provide the video
for the students to watch just as the rest of the class will watch. They can record their questions and
comparisons-differences/similarities on the audio recorder and we will go back later and record on
the worksheet Venn Diagram.

Today you will watch a video
about several students from
different places. You will first be
working on a Venn Diagram
together with your groups that
will help you identify your
similarities and differences to
another student from a different
country. You and your group will
select one of the students (their
country) from the video.
Compare yourself, a member
from your group, and the student
from the video. You will answer
the Group work! questions with
your group once youve finished
the Venn Diagram and then
answer, create some questions
on your own and summarize
what the video was about.

Now , it is your turn to reflect on
your own life and experiences
with family. I would like for you
to think of some questions that
you have about these students
that you just saw in this video
and think about what they talked
about and how they might apply
to you or not apply to you at all.

Explore Activity: Video
The students will work with their Venn Diagram
peers at their table groups. Worksheet
Students will share what they
wrote on their My Perspective
worksheets and compare what
they shared. There will be five
minutes allowed for this part of
 tradition are they talking about?
Once you have thought of some
answers and you are done, you
can share with your neighbor and
check if your answers are similar
or not. Take note of what comes
to mind. They will have a
worksheet that they use to take
notes and apply any questions
they might have had. In their
group tables they will share what
they wrote. On the Venn Diagram
sheet, they will have the
opportunity to take note of
differences and similarities of
themselves to their peers that are
at the table and a separate
student from the video. They can
ask any questions that they
would like about their peers
background and culture. Just like
they did for the video.
4 min Teach: Okay! So we all should
have an idea of what culture is.
Today we spent a lot of time
getting to know each other and
observe other students around
the world. We noticed that we
have different backgrounds
,which is our culture, and we are
all different in the way we dress,
what we eat. This is what makes
us so diverse!
2 min Apply: The students will answer
the Making Connections
question on their own that
connects themselves to the
world. They will write 5
questions that they have about
the students in the video. The
teacher will be able to reflect on
their students learning based on
the connections they have made,
the activity. The teacher will set a
timer. When that time is up, the
students will begin their Venn
Diagram worksheet and ask each
other questions about their
cultural background. They can
relate to each other and find
similarities as well as differences.
What they feel is important to
take note of is what should be
recorded in the Venn Diagram
sheet. One side My Differences,
the middle Similarities, the
other side Their Differences.
Teach: Go through the answers. None

differences.) together with the
students and what they shared
with their groups. Make sure that
the students understand the key
concepts of culture and diversity.
Apply: The students will have the Worksheet
opportunity to orally write their
thoughtful connections that they
have made with the video and
content they have learned.
Students should have responses
that relate to what they have
observed in the world around
them. I have noticed that some
of my friends dress differently
 and thoughtful questions they list
on their independent work.
1 min Closure: As you continue to meet
new people try to get to know
them! You will learn a lot about
the way they live, their culture,
and what makes them different
from you! It is nice to learn about
others in the world and see what
great qualities they bring to the
community!
To be collected: All worksheets are to be collected at the end of the
lesson.
