Abnormal Heartbeat- symptoms & Causes

Abnormal heartbeat is a more common problem than people care to understand. Scientifically
known as an Arrhythmia or tachycardia, based on the type, abnormal heartbeats may be caused
by defective heart tissue or defective electrical impulses.

Heart is the reason the body functions, making this the organ that you should be very careful
with. If you or someone you know has ever felt some kind of abnormality in heartbeats, it is
important for them to visit an arrhythmia specialist, a cardiologist or even a general physician,
get a proper diagnosis and start treatment. It is said, a stitch in time, saves nine. Like every
other health treatment, timely treatment of the diseases of the heart can prove lifesaving.
Hence, it is imperative that people take all symptoms seriously and get a proper prognosis.

Some of the common symptoms of abnormal heartbeat are-

1. Shortness of breath
2. Tiredness
3. Dizziness
4. Chest pain
5. Palpitations
6. Collapse or fainting

There are multiple heart rhythm disorders/Arrhythmia types and abnormal heartbeat can also
be classified as one of the symptoms. An arrhythmia diagnosis will present results on causes,
why the arrhythmia symptoms are showing. Major causes of Arrhythmias are-
1. Coronary Heart disease: Coronary artery disease is when the blood vessels that bring
blood to the heart are narrowed. This may cause abnormal heartbeats.
2. Heart surgery in the past: Heart attack, abnormal heart valves, previous heart surgery,
or any other form of heart damage can be a potential causative of heart rhythm
disorders.
3. High blood pressure
4. Congenital heart disease: Abnormality of the heart since birth may cause conditions
leading to abnormal heartbeats.
5. Thyroid problems: A hypoactive or hyperactive thyroid gland can cause over- or under-
secretion of hormones, causing disturbances in heart rhythms.
6. Electrolyte imbalance: Improper balance of substances in the blood such as sodium (Na)
and Potassium (K) can cause abnormal heartbeats.
7. Drugs: Taking certain medicines or supplements may contribute to arrhythmia.
8. Diabetes: Uncontrolled diabetes increases risk of coronary artery disease, which in turn,
can cause Arrhythmias.
9. Obstructive sleep apnea: This is a disorder where breathing is interrupted during the
sleep, which may lead to arrhythmia. Also, sleep apnea is a serious disease that one
should get treated timely.
10. High Alcohol Consumption
11. Use of Nicotine and Caffeine: Stimulants like caffeine and nicotine can cause an increase
in heart rate.
12. Stress
