SHOULD EMPLOYERS BE CONCERNED WITH EMPLOYEES OVERALL HAPPINESS

IN THE WORKPLACE

Executive Summary
There has always been the debate over whether an employees happiness and feeling of job
satisfaction contributes to their productivity. That from the employees standpoint, are their
contributions to their employer appreciated and do they feel they have job security with their current
employer. As a result, I prepared a survey to question employees across a wide range of fields
questions about their employer and their overall happiness in the workplace. This report addresses
whether employees believe the company they work for promotes their well-being, provides personal
and professional growth, and their whether they feel fulfilled with their current employment.

The general belief is that most employers are revenue driven and do not show much appreciation for
their employees. The employers will try to provide only the minimal compensation with little regard
for the employees well-being. This belief is due to: employees regularly complaining about their
lack of compensation, long work hours, preferential male treatment, management abuses, and lack of
input into their jobs. After conducting the survey and reviewing the results, the following
recommendations are to be considered during the next year:

1. Conduct quarterly general meetings with employees to listen to their grievances and input
into their working environment.
2. Provide regular feedback to employees as to how their work has impacted the company in
positive and negative ways, so there can be an open dialogue for continued improvement
with the companys performance goals.
3. Through providing employee feedback, the company can assure employees of their job
security.
4. Job performance evaluations should be conducted annually for consideration of bonuses,
promotions, and increases in benefits, including financial compensation.
Introduction to Happiness in the Workplace
For many years, it has been believed whether an employee is happy at his place of employment was
inconsequential. That unhappiness does not affect the profits of a company. It has long since been
proven by many companies such as Google, Bristol-Meyer Squibs, and Netflix that employee
happiness and morale is one of the highest priorities within a company and because of this, their
profits show the fruits of those labors. Long gone are the days where employees are not considered a
key element in a profitable business. Today, companies know, employees are their number one asset
and keeping their employees happy keeps them productive.
