THERAPEUTIC HORSEBACK RIDING SPECIAL PEOPLE UNITED TO RIDE (SPUR)
This exceptional program is dedicated to helping SPUR partners with the Park System to provide people

The original 379 acres of land that established Big Brook Park was formerly
used as farmland for patients at the Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital. The
Park System purchased the property from the state in 1997 and in 2010
purchased an additional 36 acres, bringing the park to a total of 415 acres.
Named for Big Brook, which drains into the Swimming River Reservoir,
the park contains forest made up of young wetland and maturing
American beech, white oak, tulip poplar and hickory trees. Perhaps the
park is better known for its rolling fields; made up of grasses, goldenrod
and other perennials that provide a contiguous field habitat for
butterflies, birds and other wildlife.
Once home to Camp Arrowhead through a leasing agreement, the

YMCA recently closed the camp, allowing the Park System control of
the entire site once again. Buildings and facilities have undergone
improvements so the Park System may host a wide variety of programs
at the site, many of which are listed in this Guide.

Tween Sewing
Learn the basics of sewing. Tweens will learn how to
read a pattern, how to use a sewing machine and learn
hand sewing. Bringing these basics together, students
will create a pair of pajama pants. Students supply the
fabric for their project; a supply list will be mailed after
registration.

JUNIOR COUNSELORS
(ages 13-15)
Learn the basics of camp counseling while having fun. Get a head start on developing important job skills
during an active week of learning, games and leadership skills. For one week, Junior Counselors will assist
counselors with younger children during camp. Camps include Summertime Fun and Theme Camps.
Applicants must complete an interview before being considered for the program.
Program runs weekly Monday-Friday, June 26-September 1, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM.

For all camps involving biking, campers must have a properly fitted bicycle helmet that complies
with U.S. CPSC Safety Standards for Bicycle Helmets for persons five and older.
The CPSC label is located inside the helmet.
Campers will not be permitted to wear helmets without this label.
Campers must bring a properly fitted two-wheel bicycle in good working condition that they are
comfortable with and in control of when riding.

In the summer, this 38-acre beach park is a great place to swim, sun and surf. In the off-season, a nice
place for quiet walks. Everything needed to enjoy a day at the beach is readily available during the
summer months: snack bar, sheltered eating areas, volleyball area, outdoor showers and changing areas,
guarded swimming, designated areas for surfing.
Park admission and parking fees are charged from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the
rest of the year, admission is free. The park is open
every day from 7 a.m. to dusk. During the beach
season, the parking lot gate opens at 8 a.m.
From April 1 to October 31, pets are not permitted

in the park; from November 1 to March 31 pets
are permitted throughout the park, including the
beach, provided they are on a leash at all times. Pets
are prohibited year round from the playground,
Skatepark, pavilion and decks, boardwalks, dunes
and habitats.
