Course Description: To make the students understand the design concept and principles of various
engine components.
Course Objectives:
The course aims to provide sound knowledge in design of automotive engine components. The
subjects covered are various types of engineering materials and their properties, selection of materials,
designing of various engine components such as piston and its assembly, connecting rod, crank shaft,
valves and valve mechanism.
Course Outcomes:
At the end of the course, the students will be able to
1. Elaborate about various types of materials, properties of materials and various applications of
the materials, and computer aided application.
2. Understand about the fits, clearance and tolerances concepts, also the design of the helical
springs.
3. Design piston and its parts, cylinder and cylinder block, lubrication of piston assembly.
4. Design the parts of connecting rod and crankshaft, know about the materials connecting rod
and crankshaft, and also know about the balancing of crankshaft.
5. Identify the materials used for the design of Inlet and exhaust valves, valve mechanism.

and automotive industry.
4. Demonstrate the ability to design an automotive or a thermal system or a mechanical
process that meets desired specifications and requirements.
5. Exhibit the ability to identify, formulate and solve automobile engineering problems.
6. Communicate effectively in verbal, written and graphical forms.
7. Apply engineering solutions in global and societal contexts.
8. Graduates will have thorough knowledge on governmental regulations and procedures for
homologation of vehicles.
9. Update their knowledge on latest technologies which enables them for life-long learning.
10. Use modeling and analysis software tools and Equipments to provide solutions to
automotive engineering problems.
11. Design, plan and execute projects related to automobile industries in a sequence with due
considerations for financial constraints.
12. Work in teams with professional ethics and ethical attitude.
