Lesson Title: My Great Wave

Teachers Name: Stephanie Krause


Grade Level: Third Grade
Content Area: Visual Art
Time to Complete: 3 Class Periods

1. Lesson Description/ Overview:


As part of this lesson students will learn about foreground, middle ground and
background. They will learn how to break their paper up into three parts to create their
different grounds. Then they will create a series of three waves on a 9 x 12 piece of white
paper with black Oil Pastel. Following this they will learn about Students will learn about
warm and cool colors and how to differentiate them. Student will show competence of
this by their use of cool colors in the waves and warm colors in the sky. Through this
project the students will also learn about using their materials properly while handling
mixed media with the use of oil pastel and watercolor.

2. Goals:
The primary goals of this lesson are, that each student will leave class with one 9 x 12
inch Great Wave work of art. Knowledge gained of the artist Hokusai and the Ink print
The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Students will also leave with knowledge on foreground,
middle ground and background.

3. Instructional Objectives:
1. Students will be able to understand information regarding foreground, middle ground
and background and be able to provide a variety of examples of use in art.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate competence of mixed media use of oil pastel and
watercolor.
3. Students will understand the artist Hokusai and the famous print Under The Wave off
Kanagawa also known as The Great Wave.

Standard 2: The student will use composition and the elements and principles of
design to communicate ideas.
VA3-2.1 Recognize and describe the differences in the composition and design of
various works of visual art and the ides they convey.

National Visual Arts Standards:

Content Standard: Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes

Achievement Standard:
Students select media, techniques, and processes; analyze what makes them
effective or not effective in communicating ideas; and reflect upon the
effectiveness of their choices
Students intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of art
media, techniques, and processes to enhance communication of their experiences
and ideas

5. Expressive Outcome(s): 1) One 9 x 12 inch Great Wave mixed media painting with
minimum of 3 waves that demonstrate foreground, middle ground and volcano to
demonstrate background. Painted with watercolor to show the use of warm colors in the
sky and cool colors in the wave.

6. Vocabulary and Definitions:

Foreground: the part of a view that is nearest to the observer, especially in a picture or
photograph. The most prominent or important feature in a painting or photograph.

Middle Ground: the middle distance of a painting or photograph.

Background: the area or scenery behind the main object of contemplation, especially
when perceived as a framework for it.

Warm Colors: include red and orange (think exciting fire and volcanoes). Contrast with
cool colors.

Cool Colors: include white, gray, blue and green (think calming blue waters). Contrast
with warm colors.

7. Materials, Tools and Equipment:


Black Oil Pastel
9 x 12 paper
Small Round Paintbrushes
Small Flat Paintbrushes
Watercolor
Water cups
Early Finisher handouts ready

8. Procedures:
First Class
Sit class on Colors Carpet
Tell them we will be learning about Under the Wave off Kanagawa
Show them Art by Hokusai
Read to them a few facts about the artist on the PowerPoint
Show them examples of what we will be creating.
Draw on the smart board shapes they will be using to create their artwork.
Then explain that the paper will be horizontal, name and how to draw the waves
and volcano.
Draw example and show examples
Turn students to tables
Use new paper to demonstrate how to mix watercolors with wet on wet method.
When exampling the paint reminds them to use it like a ballerina and use the tip
not to push it down.
Ask if they have any questions and then have them go to their tables where paper
will be passed out if time provides otherwise you will hand it out and then they
can sit at their table.
Have them begin working on oil pastel their outlines
After they have completed their lines they can raise their hand to get approval to
start watercolor.
Student that finish early can do an early finishers art work
When 7 minute clean up alarm goes off explain clean up procedures or putting
away watercolor and placing paintbrushes in paintbrush hot tub.
Have student helpers collect paintbrushes and any oil pastel art not put in tray.
Have class sit in their chair and call red table to line up for teacher.
Second class
Have class sit on Colors Carpet
Explain to them we will be starting their watercolor today.
Talk to them about the warm and cool colors
Show them YouTube video on warm and cool colors
Then show them how they blend water colors at your table
Begin to paint your work so they can see how it will look
Ask if any students have questions
Hand out their started artwork and have them go their seat
Have a few volunteers pass out water cups, paintbrushes and watercolor paints
Students begin working
After completing their work they will put it on the bottom of the draying rack
Once they finish they will be given a sticky note to write 3 things they have
learned in art and put it on the poster outside the class and if they finish that they
can do a drawing challenge art work
Students who did not finish will place art on the drying rack and continue the
following class.
Third Class
Students will come in and sit on the Colors Carpet
Students will continue working on painting if they have not finished
Have student pass out watercolor, water cups and paintbrushes to tables still
working
Students continue working
Students who have finished will write 3 things they have learned in art class on a
sticky note and put in on the poster outside class and then start a drawing
challenge.
Clean up procedures and then have a student collect all artwork and drawing
challenge art.

9. Assessment/Evaluation(s):
Each student will be evaluated by having completed his or her one 9 x 12 Oil Pastel
waves and volcano that demonstrate foreground, middle ground and background. The
final 9 x 12 project with the warm and cool colors painted over the oil pastel.

10. Accommodations:
Allow extra time for the student to complete their work. Information presented visually
such as on an overhead, posters, etc. Allow the student to stand at their desk and or/ table.
Small group cooperative learning. Allow wait time for thinking before they answer a
question. Use open-ended questions. Independent work is given to them in segments.

11. Use of Technology:


Incorporate the Smart board to demonstrate drawing shapes of the waves for
students to visualize
Use projector to provide PowerPoint visual.
