In the article Teaching Effective Presentation Skills to ESL/EFL Students, the author,
Yin Ling Cheung discusses techniques that instructors can use in order to teach English as a
second language or English as a foreign language students effective presentation skills. The
author describes macro organization as the first step of the teaching effective presentation skills
as and the second step as micro organization of phrases. She goes on to say that teaching thesis
and support of ideas is the next critical step and that they should also learn how to respond to
audience input. The author also states that the non-verbal communication, the use of visual
materials, and lastly pacing should be taught to students.
To begin teaching the students effective presentation skills macro organization should be
the first step as it consists of the purpose, objectives, outline, introduction and conclusion of what
they are presenting. Micro organization is the second step that is made up of textual coherence,
transitions and connections that make up the smaller but still important parts of presenting.
Cheung says that through teaching thesis and support students learn how to present ideas and be
able to explain them with the use of examples. Students should also learn strategies to involve
the audience by asking if the audience understands topics being discussed, asking questions and
making them participate in small exercises or tasks. It is important that they also learn how to
respond to audience input and respond in a positive manner to answers and neglect saying I
dont know to a question. Non-verbal communication and the use of visual materials are
important to learn in order to help a student avoid being frozen and speaking softly a long with
making sure that ideas are clearly presented to the audience. Lastly, the author says that pacing
good for students to learn because it helps them avoid running out of time so its important to
practice the presentation and timing themselves.
