Design of Tension Members
31. A flat of size 15x1.2 cm is used as a tension member in a roof
truss. It can be connected to a gusset plate by the two alternate
methods of riveting shown in the Figure. Calculate the
maximum tension that a flat can carry in both cases if the
diameter of rivets is 22mm and the permissible tensile stress in
the flat is 150 MPa.

Design of Compression member
32. A double angle discontinuous strut
consists of 2-ISA 60x40x6, longer legs
back to back connected to opposite sides
of a gusset plate 10 mm thick with two
rivets. The length of strut between centre
to centre of intersection is 4m. Assuming
tacking rivets have been provided along
with length, determine the safe load
carrying capacity of the section if the
yield stress for steel = 250 MPa.
Design of compression member
33. Design a single angle strut for a truss carrying a
compressive load of 97 kN. The length of strut
between centre to centre intersection is 210 cm.
Also design a (a) riveted and (b) welded connection.
Design of beam
35. A compound beam is built up
with a channel ISLC 200@20.6
kg/m attached to the top flange
of MB 450@72.4kg/m as shown
in Figure. Calculate the maximum
central load the beam can carry
over a span of 7.6 m, when the
bending stress is limited to 165
MPa. Neglect the self-weight of
the beam.

37. Design a framed
connection between a
main beam ISWB 600
and two secondary
beams MB 400
connected on either
sides of the web of
the main beam. Each
secondary beam
transmits an end
reaction of 120 kN.
