Subject/Grade Level: 7th- 8th/ Introduction to Spanish

Lesson Title:
Who is in your Family?

Lesson Duration: 60 minutes

Performance Objective: Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to
Will be differentiate between family members in Spanish
Will be able to differentiate sibling birth order (oldest, youngest, older, younger)
Will be able to describe family relationships (his father, my sister, her brother, etc)

Show Elf meme Family is my favorite, and tell students Vamos a hablar sobre la familia (Were going to talk
about the family!). Show objectives for the day.
Lesson Outline/Procedures: Instructor Notes:
1. Teacher will introduce the family vocabulary using the La Familia 3. Ask, either or questions
PowerPoint like, es el padre o el madre?
2. Students will listen and repeat vocabulary to check for vocabulary
understanding (es un madre)
a. Students will write vocabulary in their vocabulary notebooks

3. Teacher will briefly review new vocabulary with just pictures showing

b. Students will answer either or, yes or no questions
4. Show Thing Link picture and have students try to answer three questions on
the photo
a. Have student write their answers to the following questions on the
photo
A. How many younger siblings does Mrs. Ricks have?
B. How many older siblings does Mrs. Ricks have? 8. Example description while
C. How many older siblings does Mrs. Ricks have? talking about photos:

b. Review photo questions, having students raise their hands to
answer or select randomly (I have a cup with students names on
clothespins to pull from)
5. Continue family vocabulary with students listening and repeating and
writing the new words down in their vocabulary notebooks
6. Family member quiz game on purpose games
a. Students are divided into two predetermined teams to compete
for the lowest quiz time on the game
7. Introduce Spanish possessives using La Familia PowerPoint (his father, my
mother, her sister, etc.)
8. The teacher will show pictures of their family and talk about the
relationships (in Spanish)
9. The teacher will show students a picture of the Flintstone Family and have
them write 3 sentences in Spanish that describe the characters
relationships to one another
10. Students will complete the ?Quien es? Worksheet
11. For class tomorrow, ask students to email themselves a picture of their
family with at least 5 family members (pets count), or a picture of a famous
family or a cartoon family (NOT the Flintstones). They will use this image to
create their own Thing Ling image to present to the class in Spanish

Summary
Lesson Closure:
Teacher will ask students to email themselves a picture of their family with at least 5 family members (pets count),
or a picture of a famous family or a cartoon family (NOT the Flintstones). They will use this image to create their
own Thing Ling image to present to the class in Spanish. Teacher will have students verbally list relationships they
could label in their picture.

Extension/Enrichment:
Family Tree Extension activity (end of Familia PowerPoint)
Have students draw their own (real or imaginary) family tree. They can use the para decir mas
vocabulary on pg. 151 if needed, and use the model on page 150.
o Use https://bubbl.us/ to make out a family tree example
Have students guess the family members of additional pictures
If Chromebooks are available, have students go ahead and find a picture to start working on Thing Link,
and open a Thing Link account if they dont already have one
Accommodations/Differentiation:
Discuss how families can be different and teach stepmother, stepbrother, half-brother, etc. vocabulary
