General installation instructions for cabling systems and

components according to EN 50173-1 to 5

1) The European installation standards EN 50174-1, EN 50174-2 and EN 50174-3

apply for the planning, execution and quality assurance of communication cabling
installations.

EN 50174-1: Installation specification and quality assurance

EN 50174-2: Installation planning and practices inside buildings
EN 50174-3: Installation planning and practices outside buildings

According to EN 50174-2, special attention must be given to ensuring that electrical

and optical cables as well as connection technology are kept free of mechanical
stresses such as tensile, pressure or torsion stress.
The relevant specifications are to be found in the following sections of DIN EN
50174-2 2011 among other places:

Chapter 4: Requirements for the planning of the installation of IT cabling

4.4 Requirements for cable drum systems (bending radii)

4.6 Requirements for fixtures

Chapter 5: Requirements for the installation of IT cabling

5.3 Installation practice

5.3.3 Cable drum systems
5.3.5 Cable installation
5.3.5.1 a) Cable tensions
5.3.5.1 b) Bending radii
5.3.5.1 c) and e) Tensile stress

Page 1 of 3
In the installation of cables, cords and pairs of patch cords, suitable techniques must
be used with regard to the following:

a) Eliminating cable tensions caused by:

- traction in suspended cable conduits;
- cable bundles which are tied up tightly;
b) Ensuring that the smallest bending radii comply with the specifications of the
manufacturers and/or suppliers or with the relevant product standards (to avoid
damage, rollers or other aids must be used);
c) Ensuring that the tensile stress acting on the cables or cable bundles complies
with the specifications of the manufacturers or suppliers or with the relevant product
standards.

If no other specifications are made by the manufacturers or suppliers, the maximum

tensile stress acting on a cable bundle must comply with the maximum load specified
for an individual cable.

5.3.5.1 d) Pressure points

5.3.5.4 Fixtures (traction release and overlength)

For cables entering fixtures, suitable packed glands and adapters or similar fittings
must be used in order to:
a) maintain the environmental characteristics of the fixture;
b) give the cable the necessary support surface and prevent kinks from forming in the
cable;
c) give the cable traction relief if this has not already been done by means of special
fastenings in the fixture.

An overlength of the cable must be ensured at each fixture in order to allow later
access to the fixture for the connection, joining and maintenance of the cable. If the
quality plan requires tests to be carried out on an installed cable before connection or
joining of the cable, this must be taken into account when the overlength of the cable
is provided.

5.3.6 Joining and connecting cables

5.3.6.3 Shielded cabling
5.3.6.3 e) Shield treatment
5.3.6.4 FO cabling

Chapter 11: Computer centres

The following additional requirements apply for the computer centre environment
11.2.2.1: Point-to-point cabling
11.2.2.1.2 a) Mechanical protection of cables
11.2.2.1.2 b) Mechanical protection of connectors
11.3.8.5: Racks and frames

Page 2 of 3
Racks and frames should be equipped with fixing devices for the routing of cables
and cords. The following should be ensured here:

- A rack unit of the horizontal cable routing should be available for each rack unit of
connecting points:

- The capacity of the vertical cable routing within the racks and frames should have
twice the cross-sectional area of the cables to be installed when the racks and
frames are under full load.

No tensile forces acting on cables and connectors
Overlengths of individual cables available
Problem-free servicing and maintenance of individual ports possible

2. The specifications given in LEONI data sheets and in EN 50290-4-2 and IEC
TR 62691 apply for the installation of data cables and FO cables

3.The LEONI installation instructions apply for the installation of the

connecting components
