THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners,

The single word that conveys the essence of todays

readings is HOSPITALITY!
The prophet Elisha is welcomed as a stranger, in fact a
small room is arranged on the roof, for this occasional visit.
In the Gospel, Jesus says: If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these
little ones they will not lose their reward. Here Jesus is stressing the importance and the
implications of even the smallest act of hospitality given to another person. A cup of water
may be very simple, but if you are dying of thirst, it is a life-saving act.

There are many people crying out for cups of water. Yes, those who are hungry and
thirsty and dying of starvation. There are those thirsting because they have no home;
caught up in a war situation and having to flee their homeland; those in a tower block
where it is unsafe to live; those who are lonely and without family; or those who are
excluded from family membership , etc.
Yes, there are so many human situations where people have a cross to carry.

We usually dont have to go looking for crosses. They come our way without
invitation!
Being a Christian and a follower of Jesus gives us plenty of challenges and possible
crosses if we are to give true witness to our Baptism and all that it implies. St Paul in the
second reading today reminds us that we die to self and sin in order to live a new life in the
Risen Christ through our Baptism.

The implications of todays readings are so revelant to major part of the Brexit
agenda has to do with hospitality! Where does the stranger, the migrant, the foreigner, the
refugee, fit into all this?
This is why the scriptures are so alive and part of our everyday lives, when we allow
God to speak his Word to us.

can attend the workshop in the afternoon and then perform with the group. Please see full

For Children attending State Schools.
If you wish to enrol your child / children for
the 2017/2018 Programme in preparation
for 1) Pre- Communion (age 6-7);
2) First Communion (age 8 and above);
3) Post Communion (for children already
completed their First Communion
Programme.
Please take a REGISTRATION FORM from
the BLACK FOLDER on the shelf at the
BACK of the CHURCH - fill it in, attach
copies of Birth and Baptism Certificates of
the child and return as soon as possible to
the Parish Office, 4 Vincent Road.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR
ADULTS (RCIA):
If you are interested in preparing for your
First Communion, Confirmation or
exploring your faith, please complete an

the church and contact the Parish Office.
The programme will start in
7 OCTOBER 17 Jubilee Hall: 4.00-

THE CELEBRATION OF BAPTISM
If you would like to have your child baptised
on the 8th July or later, the next session will
be on Monday, 3rd July 17. Please contact

PRAYING WITH THE SCRIPTURES
Thursday after morning Mass in the church
10-10:45am, until August 3rd
As a fruit of our mission week, a few
parishioners asked for us to continue to
deepen in praying with the word of God, so
the Verbum Dei community are running 6
sessions of prayer with the word of God to
help us deepen in our relationship with
Him.
GRENFELL DISASTER FUND:
To date we have raised a total sum of
1,455.89 in aid of the victims affected by
the Grenfell Tower fire. We wish to thank all
who have contributed. Thank you for your
generosity.

An evening of uplifting Gospel music in
support of the
St John Vianney Parish and also The BIG
Sing Soul - a new charity bring the power of
singing and positive music to young people
and people in hospital, hospices and
prisons.
FREE Gospel Workshop for the young

JAIME BONET: FOUNDER OF THE
VERBUM DEI COMMUNITY

Fr Jaime Bonet was born in Majorca on the
21stMay 1926 and was
ordained on the
31 May 1952. In 1963
st
he began founding the
Verbum Dei
Missionary Fraternity
and received the Papal
Approval as a single
family of consecrated
life on April 15th, 2000.
Since his deep experience and encounter
with Jesus, when he was 14 years old, Jaime
unceasingly looked for how to best respond
to that great Love of God. His whole life was
devoted to prayer and the ministry of the
Word (cf. Acts 6: 4), a charism which he has
transmitted with passion and missionary
zeal. Thanks to Fr Jaime the Verbum Dei
community is present in all 5 continents and
continues to be dedicated to transmitting
the life of Christ through prayer and
ministry of the Word of God.
We extend our sincere condolences to the
Verbum Dei Community in our parish.
May he rest in peace. .
