With the developments of the world economy becoming ever more unpredictable, there is not only a
need for executives to have a good idea what is happening around us right nowthey need to also think
about how the future could unfold, strategically. Even though this course is by no account claiming to be
a crystal ball, it seeks to help executives and professionals gain a clearer understanding of the latest
economic, social, and technological affairs happening around us. It is intended to build economic
strategic thinking, grounded on competitiveness studies and social progress.
*Note
This course is taught in a hybrid model, with an intensiveand mandatorytwo-day residency
and live web conferences using Blackboard Collaborate. The course meets via live web
conferences on Thursdays, Jan. 26, Feb 2; March 2, 30; April 20, May 4, 11, always from 5:30 to
7:30 pm.
The on-campus session follows: Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9, from 9 am to 5 pm and will
take place at 1 Story Street, room 306, in Cambridge, MA
The on-campus weekend is mandatory and that students will not receive credit for the
course if they miss any part of the required weekend

Course Objectives
The course wants to raise managerial awareness on why economic strategy is needed at the macro, meso
and micro level of the economy and how collective behavior shapes competitive dynamics and
scenarios. Anchored in the school of thought of cluster based theory, the course wants to integrate
competitiveness to a series of important topics such as measurement, social progress, collaborative
innovation and innovation driven entrepreneurship. An emphasis on the possibilities emerging from the
circular economy will also be a leading aspect of the course.
Participation (both on individual assignments than team based) is a key component of this course.

This course requires students to work continually throughout the semester and entails a significant
amount of reading, writing, reflection and discussion. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the course,
a course pack will be provided.

Grading
A students final grade in this course will be based on the following weighting:
Class Participation: (20% of total grade) All students are expected to participate in
class discussions and group projects. Discussion boards will also be an important aspect of the
participation grade and they will need to be entirely driven by the peer-to-peer process.
This component of the grade will be accounted as complete/incomplete.
Mandatory Residency Weekend: (20% of total grade) Students will be organized in teams during the
residential weekend. A zero marginal cost simulation will be assigned, providing a briefing to the
challenge and several opportunities for debriefing during the two days. More details will be disclosed
upon the beginning of the course. A dedicated textbook is required for the residency. This component of
the grade will be accounted as complete/incomplete.
Residency is scheduled on Apr 8-9, 2017
Theoretical Individual Paper: (30%of total grade) Each individual student must prepare a 7-9 pages
individual paper (APA referenced, 12 Times Roman, 1.5 spacing) on a topic of her/his choice, inherent
to one of the following topic: a) fallacy of measurement b) competitive dynamics 3) irregular
supply/demand curves and elasticity 4) Zero Marginal Cost Society
A topic proposal, fully referenced and comprehensive of the preliminary research needs to be submitted
by March 5th , 2017 online on Canvas. Only upon approval, the final paper can be researched.
More details on the assignment will be disclosed at the beginning of the course.
Final Due Date: April 2nd 2017
Final Project: (30% of total grade) In their respective teams, students will be asked to prepare,
throughout the course, a topic inherent to the Future of Production, which will be analyzed and
addressed from both a theoretical and practical perspective. More information on the project will be
provided during the course.
Due Dates:
Paper proposal: April 23rd 2017
Team presentations on May 11th (last web-conference class)
Written papers: May 13th 2017
Class Attendance: Regular attendance is required for all sessions. Each student needs to
be able to prepare for classes and participate to the group projects, regardless of absences.
This is a graduate-level course and graduate-level work, which includes active participation in class
discussions and activities and high-quality written work, is expected. Much of a managers success
depends on communication; therefore effective written and oral communication will constitute a
significant portion of a students grade. Written work should be clear, logical, grammatically correct,
spell-checked, and persuasive and backed up by citations for any data, ideas or other content used. It
should represent the students best effort. Grades reflect the quality of a students work submitted
throughout the term according to the Harvard Extension Schools grading standards. Most of the grading
occurs in groups, to reflect the nature of collaboration outside of the classroom.

On Time. Students are expected to arrive to class on time and stay for the duration of the class session.
If you expect to be late or absent from class or need to leave early let the instructor know prior to the
start of class.
Deadlines. All assignments must be submitted at the specified day and time and late submissions will
not be accepted. If you are absent the day an assignment is due, the assignment is still due at the
specified day and time. Assignments will be submitted online (instructions will follow) True medical or
family emergencies will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Professional Conduct. Professional behavior is expected throughout the class. This means respectful
communication both inside and outside of class. During discussions, civil discourse should be
maintained at all times and comments should be aimed at moving the discussion forward. This does
not mean that students must always agree with others since reasoned, respectful dissention may be part
of the discovery process and lead to previously unconsidered options. Certainly no shouting matches or
fist fights, though. In addition, please turn off and put away all cell phones and PDAs prior to class
and refrain from texting, emailing or web surfing during class. If you are awaiting an urgent call and
need to leave your phone on during class, let the instructor know prior to class.

Course Outline and Schedule*
Introductory conversation on course structure, expectations, instruments of work, team activities and
conceptual framework of the course.
How do we measure our economic activity? Why is GDP is most commonly used instrument? What
is the relationship between GDP and supply/demand curve?
Session 3, March 2nd: Moving away from Linearity into Circularity: Circular Economy
What is so important about the Circular Economy and why is it gaining momentum? In this session
we will analyze the phenomenon and the potential to radically innovate our production of good
and services.
How can we measure competitiveness beyond the annual rankings? A study on innovation driven
entrepreneurship and collaborative Innovation will reveal ways to assess a countrys economic strategy
through the health of its small medium enterprises
The weekend component exposes participants to a daunting economic dilemma that we will call Zero
Marginal Cost Society, which stems from the core understanding of supply/demand curve and its
impact on prices and global trade. The ability of the teams to respond to a dynamically changing
context is the major learning objective, using the frameworks from the course. The reading materials and
additional briefings will be made available during the course. Access to a substantive reading will be
made available since the early days of the course, in preparation of our residency.
Attendance is required at the entire weekend in order to earn credit and pass the course. You cannot arrive late or leave early. If you are traveling from afar,
please plan accordingly giving yourself plenty of time to make it to Cambridge by the start of class. No exceptions can be granted.
