The Peavy Classic 30 was introduced by Peavy in the 1990s.

It a popular amplifier
because it has a vintage appearance and it is small and portable. The Classic 30 has one
12-inch Blue Marvel speaker. It is powered by four power tubes and three preamp tubes.
The Classic 30 is a versatile amp that has a clean channel and an overdrive channel.
Peavy's goal was to combine the bite of vintage Fender amplifiers with the gain and
crunch of more contemporary amps. A number of options are available if you want to
modify a Peavy Classic 30 to improve the tone.

1.
o 1

Replace the Blue Marvel speaker with another one by disconnecting the
positive and negative speaker cables, loosening the bolts holding the old
speaker in place. Install a new higher-quality 12-inch speaker, such as
one made by Celestion or JBL. The speaker has a significant effect on
the overall sound of the amp and speakers are easily interchangeable as
long as they are the same size.

o 2

Experiment with different tubes. Tubes are also interchangeable as long

as you use the same model of tube. The Classic 30 uses EL 84 power
tubes and 12AX7 preamp tubes. Tubes also have a significant effect on
the overall sound. Some guitarists prefer vintage tubes. Vintage tubes are
more expensive but they will help you to capture the tone of a vintage
amplifier. If you tend to use the overdrive channel most of the time,
replace the tubes with higher-gain tubes. This gives the amp more bite.

o 3

Study the values and styles of the capacitors. The Peavy Classic 30 has
capacitors for the treble, mid-range, and bass tones of the amplifier. The
mid-range cap is C19, the bass cap is C18, and the treble cap is C14. The
C19 and C18 caps are tan and the C 14 cap is green. Open the back of
the amplifier to gain access to the circuit board. There is also a boost cap,
C11, that kicks the volume up and boosts the mid-range. Many amplifier
enthusiasts prefer to use Orange Drop caps for the mid-range and bass
and Silver mica caps for the treble. Enlist a friend with electronics
experience to help you when you replace the capacitors. Use desoldering
braid to remove the old capacitors

o 4

Replace the 0.022 uf bass cap with a 0.047uf Orange Drop cap for
improved bass response. For better mid-range control, switch out the
0.022uf cap with a 0.022uf Orange Drop cap. Replace the 270pf green
ceramic treble cap with a 270pf silver mica cap.

o 5

Sweeten up the overdrive by switching the 470pf cap with a 820pf silver
mica cap. The overdrive cap is marked overdrive. One of the criticisms
of the Classic 30 is that the overdrive sounds shrill and harsh when it is
pushed. Replacing the cap will sweeten the the sound up.
