INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS

1. Your assignment should be typed using 12 point Times New Roman font and 1.5 line
spacing.

2. You are to submit assignment only in MS-WORD format unless specified otherwise.
Please refrain from converting text/phrases into picture format such as .gif / .jpeg / print
screen / etc.

3. Submission Method:

a. Face-to-face student:
You MUST submit a softcopy of your assignment online through myINSPIRE and a
hardcopy to your facilitator.

b. Online student:
You MUST submit a softcopy of your assignment via myINSPIRE and another
softcopy to the e-facilitator via e-mail.

You can submit your assignment ONCE only in a SINGLE file in myINSPIRE. You are
advised to keep a copy of your submitted assignment and the RECEIPT as evidence of
online submission.

4. Your assignment must be submitted on 10th 12th June 2016 (3rd Seminar).

5. Your assignment should be prepared individually. You should not copy another persons
assignment. You should also not plagiarise another persons work as your own.

ASSIGNMENT 1

OBJECTIVE:

The primary objective of this Assignment is to evaluate the performance of the delivery and
the level of understanding among students from the lectures, online discussion and video
teaching throughout the semester. Students performance from this Assignment reflects the
performance of delivery by the instructor and the effectiveness of the system.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Students are given an academic article, entitled, The Mayo Clinic of Higher
Education, by Kevin Carey (2001), Research Conference at the American Enterprise
Institute (AEI), June 2010.
2. Read the article thoroughly, understand the facts presented and then analyse the
issues, challenges, and strategies pertaining to higher education mainly in the United
States. Based on the article discuss the issues, challenges, and strategies as
perceived by the writer, Kevin Carey.
3. However, the ideas presented by Kevin Carey may be similar to those in your own
society. In the event that you are asked to state the resemblance and similarities with
events in your society, then you are free to state examples based on your own
perception and experience. In such cases you are required to acknowledge correctly
and properly the sources of the facts you have acquired. In other words, you could
collect facts from elsewhere to support your point. However, proper acknowledgment
is necessary in order to avoid elements of plagiarism in your assignments.

QUESTIONS:

There are five (5) questions in Assignment 1. Students are required to attempt all. Write your
answers systematically and correctly based on the American Psychological Association
(APA) system of writing convention. Focus your answers to the questions asked and do not
deviate. Marks are awarded not only to correct answers but also to the aesthetic value in
writing.

Kevin Carey set out to explore a fundamental question about innovation in higher education.
He was motivated to carry out this task due to several complicated issues surrounding

higher education in the United States. The article he produced was the result of his
observation, discussions and interactions with people of similar interest.
Using the article as the basis of discussion, answer Questions 1 to 5 below:

1) Cite several conflicting issues surrounding higher education in the United States
which prompted Kevin Carrey to explore the whole system in an effort to find
solutions to the problems.

2) As an experienced and seasoned administrator at the University of Missouri system,


Stephen Lehmkuhle was assigned to take up a new job at University Minnesota-
Rochester (UMR). He had many things in his mind for the new organisation.

Explain in detail all the things you learnt from the passage on what Lehmkuhle would
do as the administrator of the new UMR after his arrival.

3) The title of the article by Kevin Carey is The Mayo Clinic of Higher Education. What
is the significance of Mayo Clinic in relation to higher education as seen by
Lehmkuhle.

Do you see the resemblance of Mayo Clinic to any organisation in your society where
similar cooperation is possible?

4) Make a clear distinction in the process of teaching and learning in traditional


universities and innovation learning at UMR.

Do you think the approach used at UMR could be implemented in your society?

5) As most universities and higher education institutions are founded more than 50
years ago and are well-established today, do you think the UMR model could be
applied for implementation of higher education in your society.

There are FIVE (5) questions to answer. Each question carries EIGHT marks. Good writing,
good rephrasing, good paragraphing and correct referencing may earn additional TWO
marks for each question. The whole assignment may take 12-15 pages of A4 size paper.
