Sarah Weinstein
Observation
March 7, 2017
The lesson began with the different groups listed on the Smartboard. Ms. Weinstein
began working with a group at the round table and the timer was on so the students would
know when to switch groups. This lesson was focused on cause and effect, before the
students began reading the story, Ms. Weinstein checked for understanding. The students
were able to explain the definition and one student offered a good example instead of
providing the definition. Ms. Weinstein began reading the story and the students had a
cause and effect chart to fill in. Ms. Weinstein gave her students the choice of whether
they would rather find the cause first or the effect first. The students appreciated being
given the choice.
Ms. Weinstein did an excellent job of probing the students to think for themselves and
providing them with positive encouragement.
Step by step the students were able to fill out the cause and effect chart. The students
were able to efficiently find the cause and effect and they seemed to be enjoying the story
and filling out the chart.
Ms. Weinstein told her class it was time to change groups and the students moved quickly
and settled down to work. Ms. Weinstein asked Elisheva to give her an example of a
cause and she was able to. This next group was able to define cause and effect and once
again were excited to be filling out the chart. There was camaraderie among the group and
the students were eager to share with each other. Ms. Weinstein has created a wonderful
environment in the class and the students are comfortable taking risks.
