HKCA SCHEDULES
FOR PLANT USED IN DAYWORKS
CARRIED OUT INCIDENTAL TO CONTRACT WORK
(2008 EDITION)
These Schedules of plant charges have been prepared for use in connection with
Dayworks carried out incidental to contract work where no other rates have
been agreed. They are not intended to be applicable to Dayworks ordered to be
carried out after the contract works have been substantially completed or to a
contract to be carried out wholly on a daywork basis. The circumstances of
such works vary so widely that the rates applicable call for special
consideration and agreement between contractor and employing authority.

INTRODUCTION
These Schedules were last published in mid-2002, and in preparation of this fresh publication all plant
classifications and rates have been subject to thorough and comprehensive review. Several plant items
no longer in widespread use have been deleted from the Schedules, and plant classifications have been
modified or new items introduced to accommodate and reflect the increasing range and capacity of
equipment in use in Hong Kong construction.
The data contained in these Schedules are based on information available to the Hong Kong
Construction Association, Ltd in May 2008.
4
NOTES AND CONDITIONS
1. The following Schedules provide indicative `basic' rates against items of plant, these being
divided into eight separate sections. The basic rates quoted are nett of any element of
overhead and profit. At time of tender contractors are to be afforded opportunity to indicate a
separate percentage adjustment against the rates quoted in each individual section.
2. Land-based plant mounted on marine craft is to be valued at the applicable rate indicated in
Sections 01-07, prior to application of the percentage adjustment appropriate to marine plant
(Section 08).
3. The indicated rates apply only to the contractor's own plant and to hired plant, already on site,
and are exclusive of drivers and attendants. The rates are inclusive of fuel and fuel
distribution, licensing fees, the insurance of plant, repairs and maintenance, and of
consumable stores (unless these are stated to be charged in addition).
4. Save in respect of marine plant (Section 08) and subject to Note 5 below:
(i) The contractor is to be paid an additional three hours or the minimum hire period
(whichever shall be the longer) at the adjusted rate for each item of contractor-owned
plant or equipment specially brought on site on the instructions of the employing
authority or its agent (as the case may be) to carry out daywork, and a equivalent
period for removal of each such item of plant from site on completion of the daywork.
(ii) The contractor is to be paid an additional six hours or the minimum hire period
(whichever shall be the longer) at the adjusted rate for each item of contractor-owned
transport used to carry or tow any such item of plant to site for use on daywork, or
used in its removal from site on completion of the daywork.
5. In respect of marine plant (Section 08) and of land-based plant mounted on marine craft:
(i) The contractor is to be paid an additional six hours or the minimum hire period
(whichever shall be the longer) at the adjusted rate for each item of contractor-owned
plant or equipment specially brought on site on the instructions of the employing
authority or its agent (as the case may be) to carry out daywork, and an equivalent
period for removal of each such item of plant from site on completion of the daywork.
(ii) The contractor is to be paid an additional twelve hours or the minimum hire period at
the adjusted rate for any contractor-owned transport used to carry or tow any such
item of plant to site for use on daywork, or used in its removal from site on
completion of the daywork.
6. Externally hired plant specially brought on site on the instructions of the employing authority
or its agent (as the case may be) to carry out daywork is to be paid at invoiced cost (including
insurances, consumables, transport and labour), to which is to be added the cost of any
consumables or operating labour provided by the contractor, and to the sum of which is to be
added an agreed percentage oncost and profit.
7. Externally hired transport used to carry or tow plant specially ordered by the employing
authority or its agent (as the case may be) to be brought on site to carry out daywork or used
to remove such plant from site on completion of the daywork is to be paid at invoice cost
(including insurances, consumables and labour), to which is to be added the cost of any
consumables provided by the contractor, and to the sum of which is to be added an agreed
percentage oncost and profit.
5
8. In the event that plant is specially brought on site on the instructions of the employing
authority or its agent (as the case may be) to carry out daywork, any related set up or
dismantling costs are to be paid in addition to the applicable hire period.
9. The indicated rates are inclusive of primary power consumption via site-distribution of mains
power or common access to site-based power-generating equipment or integral power
generating equipment. However, where power for any plant item is generated or is stepped-
down by independent and dedicated equipment separately identified in the Schedules, then
such independent and dedicate equipment is to be paid for at the applicable rate in addition to
the plant item.
10. The cost of on-site transportation of labour, materials or plant used on dayworks to or from
the dayworks location is to be additionally charged.
11. The indicated rates are predicated on the contractor providing plant in serviceable condition.
The minimum hire charge for such plant shall be for the basic hire period quoted (unless
otherwise stated, the indicated rates are per machine hour).
12. The term `per day' used in these Schedules refers to the period of one calendar day or part
thereof.
13. The term SAE used in these Schedules refers to the US Society of Automotive Engineers,
who determine bucket capacities as follows:
Struck capacity is that volume contained in a bucket after a load is levelled by drawing a
straight edge resting on the cutting edge and the back of the bucket
Heaped capacity is a struck capacity plus that additional material that would heap on the
struck load at a 2:1 angle of repose with the struck line parallel to the ground
The SAE bucket capacities indicated in the Schedules are related to heaped capacity.
14. Hire rates for mechanical or other special plant not normally classed as small tools and not
included in these Schedules shall be settled at prices reasonably related to the indicated rates.
15. Where QPME (Quality Powered Mechanical Equipment published by the Environmental
Protection Department) are ordered by the employing authority or its agent for works carried
out in daywork, the appropriate rates in the Schedules (not including those for silenced or
super silenced machines) are to be increased by 20%.
16. Metric capacities are adopted throughout these Schedules. These are not necessarily exact
conversions from their imperial equivalents but cater for variations arising from comparison
of plant manufacturers' ratings.
17. In order to allocate plant items whose specifications and data are related to imperial capacities
to appropriate current daywork items, the conversions set out in the table overleaf shall be
used.
