Saudi Electricity Company (SEC)

1) Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) is the Saudi electric utility company which enjoys
a monopoly on the generation, transmission and distribution of electric power in Saudi Arabia
through 45 power generation plants in the country.
2) SEC with Market capitalization of $16 billion is currently 74% owned by the Saudi government,
6% by the worlds largest crude oil producer Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), with a
float of 20% on the Saudi stock exchange market. Market capitalization of $16 billion
3) The company was formed in 2000 through a merger of existing regional electricity
companies in the Central, Eastern, Western and Southern regions.
4) Since 2009 there have been reports and rumors of splitting the company into four generation
companies and separate transmission and distribution companies to encourage competition
in the domestic utilities sector.
5) A transmission company National Grid SA was established in 2012 to operate the
national grid
6) SEC has proposed to invest $80 billion in the next decade, and has decided to invest heavily in
solar /wind energy to produce an additional 41 GW of renewable energy by 2032. Ministry of
Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources is establishing the Renewable Energy Project
Development Office (Repdo) to head the National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP)
7) The peak load for electrical energy in Saudi Arabia, reached 60.8 GW in 2016, 2.4 GW less than
that consumed in 2015;Companys sales in 2016 did not exceed 1 percent compared to 2015 ;
the expected rate for growth demand in 2017 is between six and seven percent.
8) 1.2 Billion $ Fadhili power plant combined cycled gas power plant with a capacity of 1,507 MW
awarded to South Korean Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction won the contract for
engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) while Siemens will supply the gas turbines
9) New SEC HQ Project worth 1 Billion SR under construction in Olaya District Riyadh
10) JCI secured some projects through Jeddah Office through BEMCO / Saudi Bin Laden Group for
supply of HVAC equipment for the power plants i.e Riyadh PP9 (AHUs and CYK Chillers). Our
Unitary Products Group has sold a number of substation projects to SEC including Shamiya
Substation 1 & 2 Projects.
