Abstract: Drawing on a questionnaire-based sur vey of the role of textbooks in the learning and teaching of a foreign
languag e in Chinese universities, the aut hors of this paper discuss the nature of tex tbooks and their roles in the pro-
cess of lear ning a foreign language for Chinese learners. T he paper also touches upon issues co ncer ning the pr inciples
and methodology o f foreig n language textbook w riting in the Chinese co ntext.
