Content Standard 2.07 Explore ways to increase community pride.

Objectives Students will

1. Analyze community needs through demographic research

Purpose: As human beings, we desire a sense of belonging. That sense of belonging motivates us to develop the many
relationships that we have. Everyone is a member of a community, as is connected through family, work are
their neighborhood. Community is somewhere to find comfort at difficult times and also what sets the tone for
various aspects and unity among neighbors and friends. Having a sense of community pride, transforms into a
high expectation of yourself, and those around you, which brings about positive changes within the community.

Question: What is your favorite thing about your community/neighborhood?

Read through students responses and discuss.

Demonstration Discuss What is a community?

What things can be done in your own community to make it feel more like home?

What things dont you like about your community? What can you do to change that?

Go to computer lab, have students research their community. Have them find:
Research
Community information (demographics, population, community events)
30 min Needs that exist in their community
Who to contact to find present needs.
Explain that tomorrow we will be planning a service project for our communities

Students can copy and paste all the information that they want into a word document, to bring to
class for the planning process.

Conclusion: 5 min What did you learn from your research? (have students share)

Now that you know a little bit more about your community, brainstorm and research possible
projects to do for the service learning activity and bring those ideas with you to class tomorrow.

Objectives Students will

1. Organize community information into a community service project.


2. Plan community service project using the FCCLA planning process.

Question: What service project ideas did you come up with for the community?

We will refer back to these response after returning from the computer lab.

Demonstration Go to computer lab, have students do some last minute research for their community. Have them find:
Research
Community information (demographics, population, community events)

Who to contact to find present needs.
Explain that tomorrow we will be planning a service project for our communities

Students can copy and paste all the information that they want into a word document to use for the planning process.

Discuss Bell Ringer. Come to a decision on what service project the students want to do. Through discussion, and pointing
Discuss out potential problems and expected situations, help the students eliminate ideas, and narrow down to two service
projects.

Explain the FCCLA planning process. Go through each step and describe what each step means. As a class, Plan out one of
FCCLA Planning the two potential service activity ideas. Let students plan the activity, set the time, date place, etc.
Process

Differentiated Design: For those that struggle writing, allow them to draw pictures of their plan and label them, or to plan a
simpler event, that might be of some interest to them to understand the concept more easily before advancing to the
community project.

Conclusion: 2 min You can use this FCCLA planning process whenever you need to plan anything. It isnt always just used for planning events,
but could be used to plan a healthy eating plan etc Explain the purpose of creating a plan.

Question: What are some ways we can raise money for this service project?

Demonstration As a class, Plan out the second potential service activity ideas using the FCCLA planning process sheet. Let students be
FCCLA Planning involved and plan out the activity. Ask for specific details.
Process

20 min

10 min Create a list of all resources needed, and try to develop a Dollar amount that will be needed to put on the service project.

Differentiated Design: For those that want to go above and beyond, allow those students to call necessary people in the
community to retrieve information/establish contact about planning a community service project. This allows students to
have practice talking on the phone professionally.

Discuss Discuss fundraising options, by letting students brainstorm. Write their ideas on the board, offer a few of your own. Use
FCCLA planning process again to plan fundraising event, and how long it will go for, have students fill out planning sheet on
15 min
their own (5-7 min), then discuss/review as a class in case some students struggled filling it out.

Conclusion: 2 min You are all expert planners! You have officially planned three events, using the planning process.

Anticipatory 50 min Students will be prepared to implement community service project during class time.
Set/Demonstration
Depending on what project, students had decided on, permission will have possibly have been requested from principal,
staff and parents for students to miss another period for completion of the activity.

Discuss students responses. Let them share their experiences and stories.

What could have been done to prevent these things?

Writing Students are to take the next 20-25 minutes to write a 1-2 page paper about their experience.
Assignment Papers should address the following: (list on the board)

25 min What was your favorite part of the service project?

What was on frustration that you experienced, and how did you handle/overcome it?

What is the most valuable thing you learned from this experience?

If you had to plan another service project, what would you plan? Who would you plan it for, and why?

Share Have students get into groups of 3. Have each of the students share something they wrote with their group.
