WHY BANKING ?

Counting other's money, keeping its record, en-cashing cheques and drafts cannot be an
interesting work, someone may say cynically. There cannot be personal involvement and
originality in doing such a work, others may think. They may consider bank employees to be
computers, adding and subtracting all the time. But this is decidedly a better career. People
only tend to latch on to the negative aspects and drum them up. Some of them are not even
from the sector but will pass judgements.

So, this is my attempt to set the records clear. Every sector has its short comings, so does ours!!

But I will list down top 5 reasons why I will still choose this sector over and over again for my
employment.

1. Equal opportunities employer. Indian banking specially is in true sense equal

opportunities employer. Sector has more women in CXO roles than any other. Even
developed economies like US does not have such kind of representation of women in
these roles! IT sector is perceived to be women friendly - can you even name 3 CEO's
who are women and heading Billion $ companies?
2. Backbone of economy. 8 out of 10 homes are purchased on loan, 7 out of
10automobiles are financed by banks or NBFC's. Construction and Automobiles sector
are some of the most critical sectors of the economy after Agriculture. Just see what
happened to these sectors when banks stopped lending for the past 4 years!
3. Employment Generation: Finance is backbone of the any business. Lack of it or at
high rate can actually kill a business. Banks play a critical role in providing finance of
SME's which are the largest employers by no in the country. Without banks being
involved in lending to these SME's majority of them would not even survive!
4. Top 5 employer of the country: Over 13 lac people are employed in this sector
directly but if include NBFC's the no may grow by another 1 lac types. This no is set to
grow further as new banks will come into picture and as banks expand in rural & semi-
urban areas further. Do you think these 14 lac odd people are not adding value to the
economy or employment?
5. Employment with Conscience Very few sectors can boast this. We are involved in a
sector which not only keeps us gainfully employed throughout our lives but also lets
us impact lives of others. In a true sense part of 'services sector'. Can you name even
one other sector (apart from government administration) which gives us such
opportunity?

In addition to this, bank employees develop the habit of saving something for their difficult
times. When they find that the bank balances of petty shop-keepers are swelling up, they feel
the urge to save some amount of money. This implies that they start spending with extra-
caution. They try to get the maximum return from every penny they spend.

They develop social contacts with a number of businessmen. Some may say that all the public
dealing organisations widen the social circle. But in other offices you may have favour them
by doing some work which may be illegal. In the case banks if a cheque is cleared as soon it is
received the person is quite satisfied. These contacts help in a number of ways.

By working in a bank, one becomes quite cautious and scientific in doing one's work. The
scientist's accuracy needed for marking entries become the bent of one's mind. Accurate
working qualifies a person for a better life. It is the slipshod work and haphazard approach that
become hurdles in one's progress.

In banks the work is almost independent. Even officers have not to interfere in the work of their
subordinates. That is why there is not much of bossism in banks. The atmosphere quite cordial
and it becomes homely as soon as the public dealings come to an end.

Above all a career in the banks is quite promising. As compared with other departments a
person can have quicker promotion in the banks. Banks make us materialistic in outlook, which
may be denounced by the spiritualists and other's but which is a fact of the modern life. One
can find thrill even in the dullest and uninteresting work.

If Galileo can be thrilled by looking at the stars why not a bank employee by finding a mistake
in the entries, Life yield charm if we respond to it favourably.
