Grouse Creek NW Utah

A caravan of ten cars made it out to Julys field trip for copper bearing minerals, rocks and garnet
that spanned four sites and an abandoned attempt at a site for geodes.
The first site was for malachite and azurite. There were multiple mines that one needed to
navigate around as well as the random rattler. The picking good, really good.
Then we were off for garnet. While the garnet found is industrial grade and used for making sand
paper, there were some good specimens to be had. I know, I came away with one.
The geode field turned out to be a bust as the wash the group fixed last time out would not hold
for the number of vehicles that needed to traverse it. The scout car who left 30 minutes before the
rest of us got past and had the place to themselves.
We then headed out for variscite and wow, it was everywhere. There
were piles, piles, more piles and lots of smiles.
The fifth and final site was copper mountain. About only half the
group made that leg of the trip since they were rather pooped and the
day was getting long. I do understand that there was quite the thrill ride.
You will need to chat with Gary for that story.

Box Elder Museum
Our last meeting took place at the Box Elder Natural History
Museum in Brigham City Utah. A good showing of members and
their families were treated to quality fossils and minerals collected
in Box Elder, Utah and globally.
On display is a comprehensive collection of trilobites, some just
barely specs needing magnification and others larger than your
hand, from the simple Peronopsis interstrictus to the sophisticated
looking Walliserops trifurcatus. Other fossils included dinosaurs,
plants, insects and fish.
Another room is dedicated to fluorescent minerals at spectrums
of long, medium and short UV wave lengths. While these rocks
appear rather lackluster when viewed under natural light, they
come alive with vibrant irridecent color under the correct UV light.
Being that Utah is also known for its history of mining, there is
also a room dedicated to rocks and minerals representing Gold,
silver and copper bearing ore, old mining carts and trays.
Donations Are Accepted
