India is next only to China in
area and production of vege-
tables.
India ranks Ist in production
of cauliflower, IIndin Onion
and IIIrd in cabbage in the

Area and production of
major vegetables (2004-05) is
estimated at 630 million
hectare, with a production
of 93 million tonnes and
average productivity of 148
tonnes per hectare. The pro-
duction has increased by
57%.
(iii) Flowers (Floriculture)
Floriculture in India is esti-
mated to cover an area of
114 lakh hectare with a
production of 6,70,000 MT of
loose flowers and 130093
million cut flowers (nos).

Spices
India is the largest producer,
consumer and exporter of
spices and spice products in
the world.
India produces species at
about 43 million metric
tonnes on an area of 256
million hectares.
Plantation Crops
India is the largest producer
and consumer of cashew
nuts.
Total cashew production is
around 057 million tonnes
from 024 million hectare
area.
India is the third largest pro-
ducer of coconut and leads

India occupies first position
in arecanut production in the

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants
India holds 6th place in mar-
ket share in production value
of medicinal and aromatic
plant species with more than

covered under these high
value crops in India.
Forest Sector
In India, presently forest
covers about 2064% of total
geographical area of the
country (i.e., 6,78,333 km 2
area). It should be at least
33%.
According to SFR (State of
Forest Report2003), the
position of forest cover area
in India is as; 123% VDF
(Very Dense Forest), 156%
MDF (Moderately Dense
Forest), 1032% OF (Open
Forest), 876% Shrubs and
7813% Non-Forest.
At present, India has 14
Biosphere Reserves.
