SIDE IMPACT AIRBAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM

DESCRIPTION
Vehicles equipped with the side impact airbag restraint system utilize two airbags mounted to
each front seat back frame (Fig.1). This system designed to protect occupants in the event of a
side impact collision.

OPERATION
The side impact airbag control module (SIACM) controls the seat back mounted airbags.
If the SIACM determines the impact is severe enough, the appropriate airbag/s will inflate,
tearing open the front seat back trim cover/s protecting the passenger/s. Once a seat
back mounted airbag has been deployed, all damaged parts must be replaced.

Dampak side impact airbag control module (SIACM) adalah mengendalikan kursi airbag yang telah
dipasang. Jika SIACM menentukan benturan cukup parah, airbag terdekat akan mengembang,
merobek lapisan kursi depan sesaat, kemudian kembali melindungi penumpang. Setelah kursi
belakang yang dipasang airbag telah difungsikan, maka semua bagian yang rusak harus diganti.

POSITION SENSING POWER SEAT POTENTIOMETERS

DESCRIPTION
A potentiometer is mounted to each seat motor to provide a sense voltage to the MHSMM
that will indicate where the actual seat position is.

Sebuah potensiometer dipasang untuk masing-masing motor kursi untuk memberikan tegangan
akal untuk MHSMM yang akan menunjukkan di mana posisi kursi yang sebenarnya.

OPERATION
This sense voltage is derived from a 5-volt source provided by the module to the potentiometer.
The MHSMM reads this sense voltage and stores it if required.

Tegangan ini berasal dari sumber 5 volt yang disediakan oleh modul untuk potensiometer. The
MHSMM membaca ini tegangan akal dan menyimpannya jika diperlukan.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
Before any testing is attempted the battery should be carefully charged and all connections
and termi- nals cleaned and tightened to insure proper continu- ity and grounds.
With dome lamp on, apply switch in direction of failure. If dome lamp dims the seat motor is
trying to work indicating mechanical jamming. If dome lamp does not dim, then proceed with
the following electri- cal tests.

CIRCUIT BREAKER
Find correct circuit breaker on fuse block. Pull out slightly but be sure that circuit breaker
terminals still contact terminals in fuse block. Connect ground wire of voltmeter to a good
ground. With probe of voltmeter positive wire, check both terminals of cir- cuit breaker for
battery voltage. If only one terminal checks at battery voltage, circuit breaker is defective and
must be replaced. If neither terminal shows bat- tery voltage, check for open or shorted circuit
to cir- cuit breaker.

POWER SEAT SWITCH DIAGNOSTIC TEST

The Power Seat Switch Diagnostic Test can be used to test whether the switch activations
are being recognized by the MHSMM.

ACTIVATION
The Power Seat Switch Diagnostic Test can only be activated by sending the proper PCI bus
command via the DRB lll scan tool to enter diagnostic test number 2.
Upon activation of the test the operator has ten seconds to activate all
switches, manual seat switches - all 8 directions, 3 memory switches, and both driver
and passenger heat HI and LO requests, but not including the mirrors.
At the conclusion on the ten-second period, the MHSMM can be requested to provide both
Pass/Fail test information. A Pass condition occurs only if all the switches are activated. If
any of the switches are not activated, Fail will be registered.
Should a Fail condition occur, the individual switch information could be accessed using the
proper com- mands on the DRB lll scan tool.

MEMORY SEAT SYSTEM

DESCRIPTION
The Memory Heated Seat and Mirror Module (MHSMM) is located underneath the front
of the driver seat. It is mounted unto the bottom of the seat by two screws. The connections
to the system are through a seat wiring harness that interfaces with all of the
components within the seat structure.

OPERATION
The MHSMM system allows the driver to adjust the seat, both driver and passenger side
mirrors, and the radio stations to his/her preference and store them in memory. There
are two memory locations available for two driver positions to be stored. The module will
also allow either of the two positions to be recalled upon request.
The MHSMM reads all seat switch inputs and operates the seat motors according to
which switch is being actuated. The MHSMM monitors position sens- ing potentiometers
(mounted on the motors) for seat track positioning.
The MHSMM uses solid state drivers (electronic switches) to control motor activation for
both driver and passenger side mirrors. Each mirror has vertical and horizontal motors, that
contain potentiometers used to located the actual mirror position for recall purposes. Normal
electrical operation of the mirrors is accomplished by actuating the power mirror switch and
doesnt require the use of the module.
The MHSMM monitors the memory switches and has the capability to store desired
positions in mem- ory in response to a valid input sequence. Refer to Memory Selector
Switches (1, 2, and S) and Remote Keyless Entry (RKE). The memory heated seat and
10

mirror module will activate the seat and mirror motors in response to a recall request
from an indi- vidual memory switch. The positioning of the motors is determined by the
potentiometer values stored in memory.
The module operates the seat motors through relays: four dedicated to track horizontal
forward/ rearward, front vertical up/down, rear vertical up/down, and
recliner forward/rearward. A fifth relay controls the direction of operation of these motors.

GLIDE FEATURE
DESCRIPTION
The MHSMM shall incorporate a seat glide fea- ture. When exiting the vehicle and
the ignition switch is removed, the glide feature will then acti- vate.

OPERATION
This feature will allow easier entry and exit to the vehicle by moving the seat rearward a
short distance when the operator leaves the vehicle and returning the seat to its original
position when the vehicle operator returns and turns the ignition ON or extends their
seat belt.

MEMORY SELECTOR SWITCH

DESCRIPTION

OPERATION
The proper procedure of setting and recalling a memory position using the memory
switches is as fol- lows:
(1) Adjust the seat, recliner and side view mirrors to the desired position.
(2) Press momentarily and release memory switch S.
(3) Press momentarily and release memory switch 1 or 2.
(4) To program the second drivers position, repeat the above procedure using the

The memory selector switches are mounted on the cushion cover side shield of the driver
eat within easy reach of the driver. They provide a means to set and recall either of the
two positions of seat and recliner, and the side view mirror as chosen by the driver.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

GLIDE FEATURE

If seat isnt sliding forward properly:

(1) First use the DRB scan tool to check whether glide feature is enabled or not. Enable
glide feature if disabled, and go to Step 2.
(2) Turn the ignition ON and then back OFF. Remove the key. If seat glides rearward,
reinsert key and turn to ON position. If seat doesnt glide for- ward, go to Step 3,
otherwise the problem has been fixed. If Learn Guard Bands test has been run and
problem persists, then replace MHSMM.
(3) Now run Learn Guard Bands Diagnostic test as shown in this section, and go through
Step 2 again.

SERVICE PROCEDURES
REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY (RKE)
The MHSMM interfaces with the RKE vial the Programmable Communication Interface
(PCI) bus. The proper procedure of setting and recalling a mem- ory position using the RKE
is as follows:
(1) Press memory switch 1 and release to recall memory position 1.
(2) Adjust the seat, recliner and side view mirrors to the desired position.
(3) Press momentarily and release memory switch S.
(4) Press momentarily and release memory switch 1 or 2.
(5) Press and release the UNLOCK button on one of the RKE transmitters. Do NOT
press any switch for 10 seconds.
(6) Set radio station presets.

To program the second drivers position, repeat the above procedure using memory switch 2.
The second RKE transmitter can be programmed in the fashion. To recall either of the
programmed positions momentarily press and release either memory selec- tor switch 1
or 2. If using RKE, just press and release the UNLOCK button on the proper transmit-
ter for either position 1 or 2.
A recall is possible any time the vehicle transmis- sion is in PARK. This condition is
monitored by the Body Control Module (BCM).

POWER SEAT SYSTEM

Electric car seats are not only convenient, but they are also pretty simple to use. Some are constructed so that
they have simple functions such as moving back and forth, so that the distance to and from the pedals can be
adjusted, while other car seat functions are more sophisticated and allow the operator to not only adjust the
distance to the pedals, but also adjust the lumbar support. In addition, some electric car seats are equipped with
heaters so that starting your car on a cold morning doesn't have to be a jarring experience when you sit on a cold
seat. The construction of electric seats varies, depending on their functions and how many things they can do.

The power seat system option allows the front seating positions to be electrically adjusted for optimum
control and comfort using the power seat switches located on the outboard seat cushion side shield.
The power seat system allows the seating position to be adjusted forward, rearward, front up, front
down, rear up, or rear down. The power seat system receives battery current through a fuse in the
Power Distribution Center and a circuit breaker in the junction block regardless of the ignition
switch position.

The power seat system includes the power seat adjuster and motors unit, the power seat switch, and
the circuit breaker. Following are general descriptions of the major components in the power seat
16

system. Refer to the owners manual in the vehicle glove box for more information on the features use
and operation of the power seat system.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

POWER SEAT SWITCH
The power seat can be adjusted in six different ways using the power seat switch. The switch is
located on the lower outboard side of the seat cushion on the seat cushion side shield Refer to the
owners manual for more information on the power seat switch functions and the seat adjusting
procedures.
The individual switches in the power seat switch unit cannot be repaired If one switch is damaged
or faulty, the entire power seat switch unit must be replaced.

POWER SEAT ADJUSTER AND MOTORS

There are three reversible motors that operate the power seat adjuster. The motors are connected
to worm-drive gearboxes that move the seat adjuster through a combination of screw-type drive
units.

The front and rear of a seat are operated by different motors. They can be raised or lowered
independently of each other. When the center seat switch is pushed to the Up or Down position, both
the front and rear motors operate in unison, moving the entire seat up or down. The forward-
rearward motor is operated by pushing the center seat switch to the Forward or Rearward
position.
When a switch is actuated, a battery feed and a ground path are applied through the switch
contacts to the motor(s). The motor(s) and drives operate to move the seat in the selected direction
until the switch is released, or until the travel limit of the power seat adjuster is reached. When the
switch is moved in the opposite direction, the battery feed and ground path to the motor(s) are
reversed through the switch contacts. This causes the motor to run in the opposite direction.

Each motor contains a self-resetting circuit breaker to protect it from overload Consecutive or
frequent resetting of the circuit breakers must not be allowed to continue, or the motors may be
damaged. Make the necessary repairs.

The power seat adjuster and motors cannot be repaired, and are serviced only as a complete unit. If
any component in this unit is faulty or damaged, the entire power seat adjuster and motors
assembly must be replaced.

CIRCUIT BREAKER
An automatic resetting circuit breaker in the junction block is used to protect the power seat system
circuit. The circuit breaker can protect the system from a short circuit, or from an overload condition
caused by an obstructed or stuck seat adjuster. The circuit breaker cannot be repaired and, if faulty
or damaged, it must be replaced.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

POWER SEAT SYSTEM
Before any testing of the power seat system is attempted, the battery should be fully-charged and all
wire harness connections and pins cleaned and tightened to ensure proper continuity and grounds.
For circuit descriptions and diagrams, refer to 8W-63 - Power Seat in Group 8W - Wiring
Diagrams.
With the dome lamp on, apply the power seat switch in the direction of the failure. If the dome
lamp dims, the seat may be jamming. Check under and behind the seat for binding or
obstructions. If the dome lamp does not dim, proceed with testing of the individual components and
circuits.
17

CIRCUIT BREAKER
For circuit descriptions and diagrams, refer to 8W-63 - Power Seat in Group 8W - Wiring Diagrams.
(1) Locate the correct circuit breaker in the junction block. Pull out the circuit breaker slightly,
but be certain that the circuit breaker terminals still contact the terminals in the junction block
cavities.
(2) Connect the negative lead of a 12-volt DC volt- meter to a good ground.
(3) With the voltmeter positive lead, check both terminals of the circuit breaker for battery
voltage. If only one terminal has battery voltage, the circuit breaker is faulty and must be
replaced. If neither terminal has battery voltage, repair the open circuit from the Power
Distribution Center (PDC) as required.

POWER SEAT ADJUSTER AND MOTORS

For circuit descriptions and diagrams, refer to 8W-63 - Power Seat in Group 8W - Wiring Diagrams.
Operate the power seat switch to move all three seat motors in each direction. The seat should move
in each of the selected directions. If the power seat adjuster fails to operate in only one direction,
move the adjuster a short distance in the opposite direction and test again to be certain that the
adjuster is not at its travel limit. If the power seat adjuster still fails to operate in only one
direction, see Power Seat Switch in the Diagnosis and Testing section of this group. If the power
seat adjuster fails to operate in more than one direction, proceed as follows:
(1) Test the circuit breaker in the junction block as described in this group. If OK, go to Step 2. If
not OK, replace the faulty circuit breaker.
(2) Remove the power seat switch from the seat. Check for battery voltage at the fused B(+)
circuit cavity of the power seat switch wire harness connector. If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK,
repair the open circuit to the junction block as required.
(3) Check for continuity between the ground circuit cavity of the power seat switch wire harness
connector and a good ground. There should be continuity. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, repair
the open circuit to ground as required.
(4) Test the power seat switch as described in this group. If the switch tests OK, check the wire
harness for the inoperative power seat motor(s) between the power seat switch and the
motor for shorts or opens. If the circuits check OK, replace the faulty power seat adjuster
and motors assembly. If the circuits are not OK, repair the wire harness as required.

POWER SEAT SWITCH

For circuit descriptions and diagrams, refer to 8W-63 - Power Seat in Group 8W - Wiring Diagrams.
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
(2) Remove the power seat switch from the power seat.
(3) Use an ohmmeter to test the continuity of the power seat switches in each position. See the
Power Seat Switch Continuity chart (Fig.1). If OK, see the diagnosis for the Power Seat
Adjuster and Motors in this group. If not OK, replace the faulty power seat switch module.

Process
The inner workings of an electric seat are pretty simple. All electric seats operate by using a motor. Each seat will
have a motor tucked up underneath the seat and hidden from plain view. This motor is connected to a series of
wires that are also located beneath the seat's cushion. The wires are connected to not only the motor, but also to
the switches that make the seat operable. For example, if you are trying to move the seat back and forth, there
will be a switch located on the side of the seat that will allow you to do this. This switch is wired to the motor,
which in turn, is wired to the vehicle's electrical system. So basically, an electric seat works like this: You push the
button, which sends a signal through the wiring to the motor, which in turn gets its power from the vehicle's
electrical system.

Troubleshooting
Because a vehicle's electrical system also functions by using fuses, the vehicle will have a fuse box located on
the side of the dashboard somewhere. If your vehicle's seat won't move, the first thing you will want to check is
the fuse box. You can figure out which fuse controls the mechanical seat functions by referring to your owner's
manual. Simply removing the cover of the fuse box will be of no help, as all the fuses look similar and are simply
numbered. Refer to your owner's manual to figure out which number corresponds with the seat functions. If this
does not work, there may be a problem with the wiring, and the car might need to be taken to the dealer.
