2 PREPARATION
2.1 Preparing the scale for use

1. The PT270 series requires some assembly. Unpack the scale carefully, remove all
packing and place the basework upside down on the floor or a bench.
2. Secure the pillar support bracket to the side of the base using two of the four bolts
supplied. Thread the cable inside the bracket and out the stem fixing with the
supplied nylon clips. Fit the cover to the underside of the bracket and secure
through the bracket to the underside of the base with the remaining two bolts and
the screw.
3. Turn the basework over and thread the cable through the tube. Slide the tube into
the bracket and secure with two set screws. Thread the cable at the top of the tube
through the plastic bracket and slide this bracket over the tube.
4. Remove the transit screws from the front and rear of the basework. Fit the stainless
steel top to the basework.
5. Attach the indicator to the pillar by sliding it over the bracket with the flanges
engaged in the grooves on the base of the indicator. Attach the cable from the
base to the connector on the rear of the indicator and store surplus cable inside the
pillar tube. Align the indicator to the desired angles and tighten the two clamp bolts,
(one clamps the bracket to the tube and the other adjusts the viewing angle).
6. Level the scale by adjusting the four feet. Raise the side or corner opposite the
bubble until the bubble comes into the centre circle. Ensure all four of the feet
touch the bench. If the scale rocks readjust the feet.
7. Attach the AC power adaptor to the connector at the back of the indicator.
8. Avoid placing the scale in direct sunlight, near air conditioning vents or open doors
as these can cause extremes of temperature and air currents that can affect
stability.
9. Avoid unstable power sources. Large users of electricity such as welding equipment
or large motors generate electromagnetic fields that can affect weighing accuracy.
10. The Power switch is located on the front panel. Once the scale has been switched
on, it will go through a display test and then re-zero to be ready for use.
11. When the battery needs charging the LED to the left of the weight display will glow
red. To recharge the battery, plug the power supply into the socket located under
the scale next to the ON/OFF switch and connect to mains power. The recharge
light will turn to yellow while it is being charged and turns to green when the battery
is fully charged.
12. The acceleration due to gravity varies around the world. The force on the scale is a
product of the gravity value and the mass placed on the scale to weigh. As the
gravity value can vary in different world locations so can the weight displayed for
the same mass. This Scale has been calibrated for a gravity value (acceleration
due to gravity) of g=9.806 m/s2. Discrepancies in readings at the location of
installation could be due to a different gravity value and adjustment of the scale
calibration may be needed.
2.2 Care of your scale
1. Do not allow any liquids to get into or come into contact with the scale. If this
happens, wipe the scale dry with a cloth.

Page 3
PT270 User Manual Rev 1 7.9.4

2. Avoid objects impacting with the scale. Do not drop loads onto the scale or load
with a load that is greater than maximum capacity.
3. The scale should be kept clean. The scale can be cleaned with a damp cloth and
any cleaning agents should first be applied to a cloth and this cloth then used to
clean the scale. Avoid solvents as these can damage the case.
4. If the scale is not going to be used for some time, we recommend that it be cleaned
and stored it in a plastic bag in dry conditions. A desiccant sachet may be included
to prevent moisture build up. If the storage period is to be lengthy the battery
should also be removed.

6 OPERATION
6.1 Zeroing The Display
You can press the ZERO key at any time to set the zero point from which all
other weighing and counting is measured, within 4% of power up zero. This will
usually only be necessary when the platform is empty. When the zero point is
obtained the display will show zero.
The scale has an automatic rezeroing function to account for minor drifting or
accumulation of material on the platform. However you may need to press the
ZERO key to rezero the scale if small amounts of weight are shown when the
platform is empty.
6.2 Tare
Zero the scale by pressing the ZERO key if necessary. The zero indicator will be
on.
Place a container on the platform, a value for its weight will be displayed.
Press the TARE key to tare the scale. The weight that was displayed is stored as
the tare value and that value is subtracted from the display, leaving zero on the
display. The "NET" indicator will be on. As product is added only the weight of the
product will be shown. The scale could be tared a second time if another type of
product was to be added to the first one. Again only the weight that is added after
taring will be displayed.
When the container is removed a negative value will be shown. If the scale was
tared just before removing the container this value is the gross weight of the
container plus all product that was removed. The zero indicator will also be on
because the platform is back to the same condition it was when the ZERO key was
last pressed.
6.3 Weighing a sample
To determine the weight of a sample first tare the empty container then place the sample
in the container. the display will show the weight and the units of weight currently in use.
6.4 Check Weighing
Check-weighing is a procedure to cause an alarm to sound when the weight on the
scale meets or exceeds values stored in memory. The memory holds user settable
values for a high limit and a low limit and the user can set (in user Parameters)
when the alarm will sound.

7 BATTERY OPERATION
The scale can be operated from the battery if desired. The battery life is approximately 70
hours depending on backlight and RS-232 usage.

When the battery needs charging the arrow above the low battery symbol under the
weight display will turn on. The battery should be charged as soon as the arrow above the
symbol is on. The scale will still operate for about 1 hour after which it will automatically
switch off to protect the battery.

To charge the battery simply plug into the mains power adaptor. The scale does not need
to be turned on.

The battery should be charged for 12 hours for full capacity.

An LED located to the lower left of the display indicates the status of battery charging.
The internal battery will charge whenever the scale is plugged into the mains power. If the
LED is green the battery has a full charge. If it is Red the battery is nearly discharged and
yellow indicates the battery is being charged.

The battery is shipped partially charged. To maximise its life and performance it should be
fully charged before use. Many batteries of this type show an improved performance if
they are subject to full charge and discharge to low battery warning for the first few cycles.

Batteries do not last forever and will eventually hold less and less charge or will take
longer to come to full charge. The battery should be replaced once either of these
conditions becomes unacceptable.

11 CALIBRATION
11.1 Calibration
There are three Calibration types available. These are:

Normal Calibration (non linear): It is a single point calibration that allows the user
to set the value of the calibration weight. This calibration method is appropriate
when your scale is set to a low resolution.
Linearity Calibration: This is a three point calibration used to adjust the Linearity
of the scale. Use this method whenever your scale is first set to a high resolution
and whenever there is a need to adjust linearity in service.
External Calibration: This is a single point calibration method. Use this method
when your scale is set to high resolution and is used to trim the linearity at just one
point.

Care should be taken to use the most appropriate for your scale set up and the type of
calibration required.
11.2 Normal Calibration
Enter the parameter menus as in Section 10. To enter the parameter menus turn the
scale OFF and then restart with the ON key. Press the PRINT key during the initial self
checking of the display. The Weight Display will show "Pn" requesting the password
number to be entered. Press M+, G/N, and TARE to enter the Parameters page, the
display will show P0 CHK.

maximum.
Press the ZERO key LOAD Place the required weight on the platter
and allow to stabilise.
Press the ZERO key PASS Scale performs the calibration and shows
the result then restarts.

The display will show pass if the calibration was successful. The scale will show an Error
code if the calibration is unsuccessful. In this case check for disturbing influences and
repeat the calibration.

12 ERROR CODES
During the initial power-on testing or during operation it is possible the scale may show an
error message. The meaning of the error messages is described below.

If an error message is shown repeat the procedure that caused the message, turning the
balance on, calibration or other functions. If the error message is still shown then contact
your dealer for further support.
