I. Introduction:

School is said to be the place where children learns and molds

themselves into someone they wanted to be. But that is not the only

luxury that schools can give, they can also be a battlefield, a place of

survival some may seem, where the famous and beautiful are

honored and respected while the poor little once are bullied.

Bullying is a big problem now in our society and whats

alarming is the breeding ground of this plague is our school. Our very

own second home is the ground for bullies. But before we trigger into

the problem let us first define what a bully is. According to the New

Websters Dictionary of the English Language, a bully is someone

who enjoys oppressing others weaker than himself. There are

different factors that may affect a persons behavior it may be caused

by its environment, history and other related matters. And one of the

main factors of this change is caused by bullying, it may depress

someone thus making his/her self-esteem degrades. Nowadays, we

must not seem to notice events such as bullying but some incidents
must be as vivid as crystals, we cant just identify if it is already an act

of bullying or just another forms of it.

We as students undergo same challenges in our daily lives and

experienced bullying at the same time. Bullying must be stop. But

how? What makes a child a bully? How can we overcome bullying?

These questions are the main reasons of our study. And the answers

are soon to be found.

i. Background of the Study

Bullying is all about behavior, how a person interacts and

behaves. Let us first dig into the early ideas about behavior.

From earliest times, people have sought to explain behavior

and to find remedies for behavior disorders. Archeological evidence

shows that Stone Age people engage in a practice called trephining

To cure behavior disorders. Trephining involved chipping away a hole

in the disturbed persons skull to allow the evil spirits inside to

escape. This might have actually cured some types of disorders by

relieving pressure on the brain. Some trephined skulls show growth

over the wound indicating that some people miraculously survived

this treatment (Rayland, R.G. Invitation to Psychology, 2002)

Even thousands of years ago behavior is one of the most

mysterious aspects of the human composition. It does affect

everything and anyone around you. Bullying may not be considered a

serious mental disorder rather it is a rude or unacceptable actions

towards others that may cause physical or emotional pressure

towards the victim. Bullies are people who have their reasons too;
they may have undergone the same problem and just trying to repeat

it to avenge them. Or they may have other factors that turned them

into a dark shade. This hypothesis of ours will soon be a fact as soon

as we have proven it and finished our study.

ii. Statement of the Problem

Bullying still appears to be a big hindrance to ones emotional

growth. Hence, it also affects the victim physically.

These following questions aim to support this topic:

1. What is bullying?

2. What are the possible reasons of bullying?

3. What type of people is directly affected by bullying?

4. What are the effects of this to ones individual growth?

(emotional and physical growth)

5. How does it affect our community and society?

6. What are the possible ways to stop bullying in the

community or society?
iii. Significance of the Study

Students nowadays are emotionally imbalanced; they tend to

be easily affected by the people around them. We are teenagers and

we are still in a process of metamorphosis. We are affected by

several matters, this matters serves to greatly affect our growth.

The importance of this study is for us to understand the

collected information on the main reason of why students most

especially teens bully each other. We are also looking at the big

picture of how great this bullying thing affects the attitude of the

student and affect to their whole emotional growth. At the same time

we are aiming to know how to stop or lessen this plague in school

and soon in the community.

iv. Scope and Limitation

Bullying is still a big problem in our community especially

school. In fact, the rate of students being bullied in school is getting

higher and higher every year. 6 out of 10 students are confirmed to

be a bully. They just dont notice it but their jokes and the way they

speak is a kind of another way of bullying verbal bullying.

This study directly involves bullies and those who are bullied.

This study aims to deepen our knowledge on why and how bullies act

that way. This will help us understand them and in the same time,

help them as well through giving care, love and attention. The

researchers surveyed 25 students (high school) of University of Cebu

Lapu-lapu and Mandaue to know how many students have been

bullied and is presently being bullied.

v. Definition of Terms

Bullying is said to have a long term effect on its victim. This

study helps the victim to be knowledgeable about the bullies. To

further more understand about the contents of this research paper,

here are some key words to help you out:

Bullying the process of intimidating or mistreating

somebody weaker or in a more vulnerable situation

Bully an aggressive person who intimidates or mistreats

weaker people

Behavior - the way in which somebody behaves

Metamorphosis A marked change in appearance,

character, condition, or function.

Trephining to remove a circular section from a bone,

especially the skull, or from corneal tissue with a trephine

Verbal Bullying using words or language, especially to

opposed someone
II. Review of Related Literature

Bullying and harassment are not new issues that students and

schools face. In fact, over the years it has been viewed as being so

common place in schools that it has been overlooked as a threat to

students and reduced to a belief that bullying in a development stage

that most youth will experience then get over (Ross, 2002, p.107)

This harassment is not isolated to schools alone. But schools

are the best place to actively intervene. Teachers, administrators,

counselors, and even students have the greatest access to the most

students through a school system. It is here that school staff can

intervene, support and educate students about ending bullying

behaviors directly and indirectly; breaking the bullying cycle. This

paper will address bullying in general at all grade levels, but its

intervention focus will be at the high school level. (Harris and

Hathorn, 2002, p.50)

According also to Harris and Hathorn, Because adolescence is

a difficult time in childs maturation, bullying exacerbates these

difficult times by forming barriers to positive connections with other

students and school faculty members. Consequently, the presence of

bullying at school often creates a barrier for young people to develop

into well-adjusted adults.

High school is the last opportunity educators have to work with

students at building character for some students this may be the last

opportunity for an intervention to change behaviors, before they

become adults in the workplace, with a family in the community at

large.
III. Methodology

Research Design

This study involves about the behavior of a bully and how it

affects its peers, this study furthermore dig into the world of bullies

and victim and to know what are the factors that affect a bully to hurt

anymore.

Research Environment

This study is conducted at the University of Cebu Lapu-

lapu and Mandaue and is located in A.C. Cortes Ave., Looc,

Mandaue City. The researchers are conducting the research in the

Basic Education Department High school only.

Data Gathering Plan

The researchers decided to have a survey on the actions

of the chosen respondents. The survey will verify our conclusions and

furthermore makes complimentary conclusions. We will furthermore

analyze and conclude with supporting details.
