In11g,theagentscanoptionallybeinstalledasapplicationsinaOracleWebLogicServer,andautomaticallybenefitfromthe
clustering,loadbalancing,datasourcesandconnectionpoolingfeaturesavailablewiththeapplicationserver.Theyarebydefault
scalableandhighlyavailable.

StandaloneAgents(likein10g)andJavaEEAgents(inWLS).Well,theyare(almost)thesamepieceofcode.Themain
differenceiswhere/howyouinstallthem(inWLSorontopofaJVM)andthefeaturesthatyoubenefitfromthisinstallation.
Typically:

TheStandaloneagentiseasiertodeployanywhere,butdoesnothaveclusteringorconnectionpooling.Itcanrelyon
OracleProcessManagerandNotificationServer(OPMN)forbeingprotectedandmonitoredlikeaserviceanditcanuse
thebuiltinODILoadBalancingfeature.

TheJavaEEagentisslightlymorecomplextosetup(youneedtoinstallWLSfirst,setupadomain,andsoforth),but
givesyouaccesstoadifferentworldintermsofenterprisescaledeployment:clustering,loadbalancing,centralized
monitoringandsoforth.

Notethatthechoicebetweenthetwotypeofagentsisreallyauserchoice,anditiseasytomixboththesetypeofagents
seamlesslyintoanODIarchitecture.(yes,youreadthatcorrectly,thestandaloneandJEEagentscanbeusedtogetherinthe
samenetworktopology!)
