5G APPLICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
The 3400-3800 MHz band will support a wide range of applications.

Ultra High Definition Video requirements Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality requirements
30-40 Mbit/s (4K), 80-100 Mbit/s (8K) 50 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s
20 ms (end-to-end latency) 10 ms latency (end-to-end latency)

MULTI LAYER APPROACH
Various 5G applications and services will require access to appropriate
spectrum from within the three layers.

eMBB, High Frequencies

URLLC Super data layer Above 6GHz
Addressing specific use cases
requiring extremely high data rates

eMBB, URLLC, Medium Frequencies 2 to 6 GHz

mMTC (no deep coverage) Coverage & capacity layer (e.g. 3400-3800 MHz)
Best compromise with capacity & coverage

Low Frequencies
Coverage layer Below 2GHz
Wide and deep indoor coverage

THE IMPORTANCE OF WIDE CHANNEL BANDWIDTH
By design, 5G-NR will optimally support wideband operation, allowing operators to
take full advantage of larger allocations of contiguous spectrum to increase peak rates
and user experience with manageable terminal complexity and minimal power
consumption
RF channel Bandwidth Peak data rates* Average data rates* 5th percentile data rates*
100 MHz 3 Gbit/s 0.78 Gbit/s 22.5 Mbit/s
In the 3400-3800 MHz band 30 bit/s/Hz in DL 7.8 bit/s/Hz in DL, dense urban 0.225 bit/s/Hz in DL, dense urban

Massive MIMO: The worlds first 3400-3600 MHz

more antenna elements, massive MIMO field tests were
more aggregated energy, carried out in Japan in February 2017
more beamforming layers, demonstrating 1.4 Gbit/s with 16
better cell throughput, layers massive MIMO and 2
better cell coverage, Massive MIMO Component Carriers CA

EQUIPMENT AVAILABILITY
3400-3800 MHz 5G equipment availability, clear focus in industry.

To enable broader commercialization from 2019:

5G trials and interoperability testing (both LTE Evolution and 5G-NR)

in the 3400-3800 MHz range will start late in 2017

GSA expects commercial readiness of the 5G-NR ecosystem in 2018

SPECTRUM AVAILABILITY, GSA RECOMMENDATIONS
3400-3800 MHz spectrum availability is key to the introduction of 5G in
Europe
The ongoing update of the 3400-3800 MHz regulatory framework needs to
reach stable output by December 17
In line with the rst version of 3GPP Release 15 specications for non-standalone (NSA) 5G

Regulators to design spectrum auctions allowing operators access to

contiguous unpaired spectrum assignments in the order of 100 MHz

Auctions should take place in 2017 / 2018

To avoid any risk of missing the targets from the European Commission 5G action plan
To enable to launch commercial services in 2018 / 2019
