D) Learning Objectives:
Students will learn how to tell time in Spanish and to ask and respond questions
about when are specific events happening. They will become skilled about cultural
differences in regards to telling time. They will be exposed to new phrases that are
frequently used when telling time and will relate new vocabulary to familiar words.
The student will contextualize previous lessons learned and the new content
reinforcing their ability to further their knowledge.
E) Activity:
1. Review previous knowledge of numbers:
1 to 10: A. Use the board and write the numbers 1 to 10 and have students name
them indistinctively (not in order/ should know them by now). B. Have students
come to the board and write the numbers 1 to 10 as called by other students
(emphasize pronunciation).
11 to 90: Pronunciation Have students take out a blank piece of paper and write
their name on the top right corner. Play file “pronunciation” to review numbers
from 11 to 90 and their combinations (previously covered). Have students call
numbers indistinctively and then write them down on the piece of paper, compare
answers (number ei. 45 and spelling ei. cuarenta y cinco).
2. Introduce telling/ asking time: the 12 hr format and the 24 hr format. New
expressions of AM and PM in Spanish (ei. de la mañana, de la tarde, mediodía,
medianoche, de la tarde, etc.) In class lesson and interactive activity to reinforce
lesson about “¿Qué hora es?”

events are happening. In class lesson and interactive activity to reinforce about

5. Evaluation: print and provide handout at the end of the class. It is an informal
assessment to make sure that students understood basic concepts of telling time
plus practicing recognizing and writing numbers.

Lesson: Telling Time

The verb ser is used to express the time of day. Use es when referring to “one o’clock”
and use son when referring to all other hours.

Es la una............................................................. It’s one o’clock.
Son las dos.......................................................... It’s two o’clock.

The feminine article (la, las) is used before the hour because it refers to “la hora.”

Minutes can be added to the hour using the word y (and).

Es la una y cinco.................................................. It’s five minutes past one.


Son las tres y doce.............................................. It’s twelve minutes past three.

Minutes can be subtracted from the hour using the word menos (less).

Es la una menos cinco......................................... It’s five minutes till one.


Son las tres menos doce...................................... It’s twelve minutes till three.

You can also use the words media (half) and cuarto (quarter).

Es la una y media................................................ It’s half past one.

To say something occurs at a specific time, use the formula a + la(s) + time.

La fiesta empieza a las nueve.............................. The party begins at nine o’clock.
El banco abre a las ocho y media......................... The bank opens at half past eight.

To differentiate between a.m. and p.m. use the expressions de la mañana, de la tarde
and de la noche.
Son las dos de la tarde........................................ It’s two in the afternoon.
Son las dos de la mañana.................................... It’s two in the morning.
Son las diez de la noche...................................... It’s ten in the evening.

When no specific time is mentioned, use the expressions por la mañana, por la tarde,
por la noche.

Siempre leo el periódico por las mañanas............ I always read the newspaper in the
morning.
