KeyCompetencies:
Thinking.
Relating to others.
Participating and contributing.
Motivation:(How will you engage children in the lesson? Include introduction, development and conclusion)
Introduction: Explain in clear language the LI for the lesson and the broader context of what we are doing (the speech competition)
Development: Class discussion and group work will engage students in doing after the first period of listening. I will remind students
that making mistakes is okay and we will learn from each other.
Conclusion: Asking students to analyse a finished product (the video) will encourage them listen closely to the video and generate
opinions on it.

LearningIntentions (Share with children what they are expected to learn)

We are learning to analyse and understand the structure of a speech.
LearningExperiences: (How will children learn?)

10: 50 Explain the learning intention to students (WALT)

Ask students the questions: What is a speech?/Why do people give speeches/What makes a great speech?/What do we
need to include in our speeches to make them effective?
10:55 Ask students to get into pairs and brainstorm some ideas.
11:00 Ask students to share their ideas.
Choose students even if they dont have their hands up.
Make sure to ask them why?
Write their ideas on the whiteboard in a brainstorm cloud.
If students dont mention everything, cover off the last points.
Take photo of brainstorm.
11:15 Get students into groups of three (ask them not to team up with students that they dont work well with).
Explain the task: Scrambled Speeches
In each envelope there is a scrambled speech which is a speech that has been cut up into different parts.
Groups must read the different parts, put the speech in the correct order and glue it onto the paper.
They must label the parts (intro, main point 1/2/3 etc) and make notes on the paper about why they chose to place
each part in that position.
If there is a part missing, the students must identify this too.
Explain that groups will be sharing their work with the rest of the class.

11:25 Students do the activity while I roam about the room offering help.
I call students come back to the mat at the end of the activity.
11:45 Groups share their work with the rest of the class.
I will prompt them with questions to draw out the information from them if needed.
12:05 Watch video of 10 year old giving speech on kindness
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtCxjMdE5dM
12:10 Ask students to comment on what they liked the speech and why.
12:15 Ask students if they have any suggestions for improving the speech, what those improvements would be and why.
12:20 Ask students if they have any questions about what we have done so far.
12:25 Clean up class before lunch.

Assessmentprocedures:
(HowwillyouknowthattheLIhasbeenachieved?)

I will review students scrambled speeches work and I will take notes of the answers/ideas they generate after watching the video.

SuccessCriteria
Students will be able to discuss the different parts of a speech and will be able to explain in their own words how a speech is
structured.
