Backupandrecovery
Backupreferstothemakingcopiesofdatasothattheseadditionalcopiesmaybeusedtorecover
theoriginalafteradatalossevent.
Backupsareusefulprimarilyfortwopurposes.Thefirstistorestoreastatefollowingadisaster
(calleddisasterrecovery).Thesecondistorecoversmallnumbersoffilesaftertheyhavebeen
accidentallydeletedorcorrupted.
AcronisTrueImage2015HDdoesbothbycreatingdisk(orpartition)imagesandfilelevelbackups
respectively.
Backupversions
Backupversionsarethefileorfilescreatedduringeachbackupoperation.Ifyoudonotuse
consolidationfeature,theamountofversionscreatedisalwaysequaltotheamountoftimesthe
backupisexecutedortotheamountofstoredpointsintime.
So,aversionrepresentsapointintimetowhichthesystemordatacanberestored.Toputit
anotherway,backupversionsrepresentfullandincrementalbackupsseeFullandincremental
backups(p.10).
Thebackupversionsaresimilartofileversions.Thefileversionsconceptisfamiliartothosewhouse
aWindowsVistaandWindows7featurecalled"Previousversionsoffiles".Thisfeatureallowsyouto
restoreafileasitexistedonaparticulardateandtime.Abackupversionallowsyoutorecoveryour
datainasimilarway.
Thiscouldbeusefulwhentryingtofinddamagedordeletedfiles.Simplybrowsethroughthebackup
versionsintheAcronisBackupExploreruntilyoufindthebackupversioncontainingtherequired
files.Additionally,youcanrecoverdifferentsavedversionsofthefoundfiles.
Diskcloning
Thisoperationmigratesorcopiestheentirecontentsofonediskdrivetoanotherdiskdrive.This
maybenecessary,forexample,wheninstallingalargercapacitydisk.Theresultistwoidentical
AcronisTrueImage2015HDdoesnotprovideforcloningasinglepartition.Youcanonlyclonethe
entiredrive.
Youcanalsotransferalltheinformationfromyourharddiskdrivetoanotheronebybackingupthe
entireoldharddiskandthenrecoveringthebackuptothenewdisk.
Backupfileformat
AcronisTrueImage2015HDusuallysavesbackupdataintheproprietarytibformatusing
compression.Thisreducestheamountofneededstoragespace.
Whencreatingatibfile,theprogramcalculateschecksumvaluesfordatablocksandaddsthese
valuestothedatabeingbackedup.Thesechecksumvaluesallowfortheverificationofdata
integrity.
ThedatafromtibfilebackupscanberecoveredonlythroughAcronisproducts.Thismaybedonein
Windowsorintherecoveryenvironment.
Backupvalidation
Thebackupvalidationfeatureallowsyoutoconfirmthatyourdatacanberecovered.Asmentioned
above,theprogramaddschecksumvaluestothedatablocksbeingbackedup.Duringbackup
validation, AcronisTrueImage2015HDopensthebackupfile,recalculatesthechecksumvalues
andcomparesthosevalueswiththestoredones.Ifallcomparedvaluesmatch,thebackupfileisnot
corruptedandthereisahighprobabilitythatthebackupcanbesuccessfullyusedfordatarecovery.
Disasterrecovery

Scheduling
Foryourbackupstobereallyhelpful,theymustbeas"uptodate"aspossible.Thismeansthatyou

quiteeasy,onoccasion,youmayforgettodoabackup.
Withthescheduler,youdonothavetoremember.Youcanscheduleautomaticbackupsaheadof

Factoryimage
Afactoryimageisaspecialdiskbackupthatcontainsthecomputer'sfactoryconfiguration.This
backupisnormallycreatedandprovidedbythehardwaresupplierwhohasdeliveredthecomputer.
Disk/partitionbackupsaredifferentfromfileandfolderbackups.AcronisTrueImage2015HDstores
anexactsnapshotofthediskorpartition.Thisprocedureiscalled"creatingadiskimage",or
"creatingadiskbackup"andtheresultingbackupisoftencalled"adisk/partitionimage"or"a

IfyouplantouseanexternalUSBharddrivewithyourdesktopPC,connectingthedrivetoarear

IfyouhaveaGigabitEthernethomenetworkandadedicatedfileserverorNAS,youcanstore

Ifyoudecidetouseanexternalharddrive,NAS,NDAS,etc.,youwillneedtocheckwhetherAcronis
TrueImage2015HDdetectstheselectedbackupstorage.YouneedtocheckthisbothinWindows
andwhenbootedfromtherescuemedia.
TogainaccesstoanNDASenabledstoragedevice,inmanycasesyouwillneedtospecifytheNDAS
deviceID(20characters)andthewritekey(5characters).ThewritekeyallowsyoutouseanNDAS

BlankopticaldiscssuchasDVDR,DVD+Rareverycheap,sotheywillbethelowestcostsolutionfor
backingupyourdata,thoughtheslowestone.Thisisespeciallytruewhenbackingupdirectlyto
DVDs.Furthermore,ifyourbackupconsistsofseveralDVDs,datarecoveryfromDVDswillrequirea
lotofdiscswapping.Ontheotherhand,usingBluraydiscsmaybeaviableoption.
Duetothenecessityofswappingdiscs,westronglyrecommendtoavoidbackinguptoDVDsifthenumberof

programwillcreateasinglebackupfile.
Ifthestoragediskhasenoughspace,butitsfilesystemdoesnotallowtheestimatedfilesize,the
programwillautomaticallysplittheimageintoseveralfiles.
Ifyoudonothaveenoughspacetostoretheimageonyourharddisk,theprogramwillwarnyou
andwaitforyourdecisionastohowyouplantofixtheproblem.Youcantrytofreesome
additionalspaceandcontinueorselectanotherdisk.
WhenbackinguptoaCDR/RW,DVDR/RW,DVD+R/RW,BDR/RE:
AcronisTrueImage2015HDwillaskyoutoinsertanewdiskwhenthepreviousoneisfull.
Alternatively,youmayselectthedesiredfilesizefromthedropdownlist.Thebackupwillthenbe
splitintomultiplefilesofthespecifiedsize.Thisisusefulwhenyoustoreabackuptoaharddiskin
ordertoburnthebackuptoCDR/RW,DVDR/RW,DVD+R/RWorBDR/RElateron.
CreatingimagesdirectlyonCDR/RW,DVDR/RW,DVD+R/RW,BDR/REmighttakeconsiderablymoretime
thanitwouldonaharddisk.
Whenthisoptionisenabled,theprogramwillchecktheintegrityoftherecentlycreatedor
supplementedbackupversionimmediatelyafterbackup.Whensettingupabackupofcriticaldataor
adisk/partitionbackup,westronglyrecommendthatyouenablethisoptioninordertoensurethat
thebackupcanbeusedtorecoverthelostdata.
Regularvalidation
Youcanalsoschedulevalidationofyourbackupstoensurethattheyremain"healthy".Bydefault

Werecommendthatyouselectthischeckboxwhenyourharddriveisfailing,forexample:
Harddriveismakingclickingorgrindingnoisesduringoperation.
TheS.M.A.R.T.systemhasdetectedharddriveissuesandrecommendsthatyoubackupthe
driveassoonaspossible.
Whenyouleavethischeckboxcleared,thebackupmayfailbecauseofpossiblebadsectorson
thedrive.
WhennotenoughspaceinASZ,deletetheoldestbackup(thepresetisenabled)We
recommendthatyouselectthischeckboxwhenplanningunattendedscheduledbackupstothe
AcronisSecureZone.Otherwise,whentheAcronisSecureZoneisfullduringabackupoperation,
Youcanspecifysecuritysettingsforbackedupfiles(thesesettingsrelateonlytofile/folderbackups):
Preservefilesecuritysettingsinbackupsselectingthisoptionwillpreserveallthesecurity
properties(permissionsassignedtogroupsorusers)ofthebackupfilesforfurtherrecovery.
Bydefault,filesandfoldersaresavedinthebackupwiththeiroriginalWindowssecuritysettings
(i.e.permissionsforread,write,executeandsoonforeachuserorusergroup,setinfile
Properties>Security).Ifyourecoverasecuredfile/folderonacomputerwithouttheuser
specifiedinthepermissions,youmaynotbeabletoreadormodifythisfile.
Toeliminatethiskindofproblem,youcandisablepreservingfilesecuritysettingsinbackups.
Thentherecoveredfiles/folderswillalwaysinheritthepermissionsfromthefoldertowhichthey
arerecovered(parentfolderordisk,ifrecoveredtotheroot).
Or,youcandisablefilesecuritysettingsduringrecovery,eveniftheyareavailableinthebackup.
Theresultwillbethesame.
Inbackups,storeencryptedfilesinadecryptedstate(thepresetisdisabled)checktheoption
ifthereareencryptedfilesinthebackupandyouwantthemtobeaccessedbyanyuserafter
recovery.Otherwise,onlytheuserwhoencryptedthefiles/folderswillbeabletoreadthem.
Decryptionmayalsobeusefulifyouaregoingtorecoverencryptedfilesonanothercomputer.
IfyoudonotusetheencryptionfeatureavailableinWindowsXPandlateroperatingsystems,
simplyignorethisoption.(Files/foldersencryptionissetinProperties>General>Advanced
Attributes>Encryptcontentstosecuredata).
Theseoptionsrelateonlytofile/folderbackups.
Thisoptionisalsousefulwhenyouscheduleyourbackups.Forexample,youmaywanttoperform
backupseveryweekdayintheeveningtosaveallyourwork.Schedulethebackupandselectthe
checkbox.Afterthatyoumayleaveyourcomputerwhenyoufinishyourworkknowingthatthe
criticaldatawillbebackedupandthecomputerwillbeturnedoff.
Operationpriority
Changingthepriorityofabackuporrecoveryprocesscanmakeitrunfasterorslower(dependingon
whetheryouraiseorlowerthepriority),butitcanalsoadverselyaffecttheperformanceofother
runningprograms.Thepriorityofanyprocessrunninginasystem,determinestheamountofCPU
usageandsystemresourcesallocatedtothatprocess.Decreasingtheoperationprioritywillfree
moreresourcesforotherCPUtasks.Increasingbackuporrecoveryprioritymayspeeduptheprocess
bytakingresourcesfromtheothercurrentlyrunningprocesses.TheeffectwilldependontotalCPU
usageandotherfactors.
Youcansetuptheoperationpriority:
Low(enabledbydefault)thebackuporrecoveryprocesswillrunslower,buttheperformance
ofotherprogramswillbeincreased.
Normalthebackuporrecoveryprocesswillhavetheequalprioritywithotherprocesses.
Highthebackuporrecoveryprocesswillrunfaster,buttheperformanceofotherprogramswill
bereduced.Beawarethatselectingthisoptionmayresultin100%CPUusagebyAcronisTrue
Image2015HD.
Networkconnectionspeedlimit
WhenyoubackupdatatonetworkdrivesorFTP,youcanreducetheinfluenceofconnectionusedby
TrueImageonothernetworkconnectionsofyourcomputer.Settheconnectionspeedthatwillallow
youtouseInternetandnetworkresourceswithoutannoyingslowdowns.
Toreduceconnectionspeed:
SelecttheLimittransferratetocheckboxandspecifyanoptimalvalueandanappropriate
measurementunit(kilobitsormegabitspersecond).
Thebackupoperationsmenucancontainthefollowingitems:
Editsettingsallowseditingofthecurrentbackupsettings.
Reconfigure(forbackupsmanuallyaddedtothebackuplist)allowsconfiguringthesettingsofa
backupcreatedbyapreviousTrueImageversion.Thisitemmayalsoappearforbackupscreated
onanothercomputerandaddedtothebackuplistwithoutimportingtheirsettings.
Withoutbackupsettings,youcannotrefreshthebackupbyclickingBackupnow.Also,you
cannoteditandclonethebackupsettings.
Reconfigure(foronlinebackups)allowsyoutobindaselectedonlinebackuptothecurrent
computer.Todothis,clickthisitemandreconfiguresettingsofthebackup.Notethatonlyone
onlinebackupcanbeactiveononecomputer.
Validatestartsbackupvalidation.
Cleanup(availablefornonstopbackuponly)openstheCleanupdialogboxwhereyoucan
deletethebackupversionsyounolongerneed.Thebackupchainwillnotbecorrupted.
Openlocationopensthefoldercontainingthebackupfiles.
ClonesettingsCreatesanewemptybackupboxwiththesettingsoftheinitialbackupand
named(1)[theinitialbackupname].Changethesettings,savethem,andthenclickBackup
nowontheclonedbackupbox.
Moveclicktomoveallthebackupfilestoanotherlocation.Thesubsequentbackupversions

Ifyouchangethebackupdestinationbyeditingthebackupsettings,onlynewbackupversions

Deletedependingonabackuptype,thiscommandcompletelydeletesthebackupfromits

Youcansavebackupversionstodifferentdestinationsbychangingthebackupdestinationwhen
editingthesettingsofaselectedbackup.Forexample,afteryousavetheinitialfullbackuptoan
externalUSBharddrive,youcanchangethebackupdestinationtoaUSBstickbyeditingthebackup
settings.ThesubsequentincrementalbackupswillbewrittentotheUSBstick.
YoucannotuseAcronisSecureZoneasoneoftheplacesforstoringapartofbackupversionsbelongingtothe
samebackup"chain",becausesuchbackupversionsmaybeautomaticallydeletedduringautomaticbackup
consolidationinAcronisSecureZone.Asaresult,thebackupchainwillbecorrupted.
Tocompletethebackup,youmayeithertrytofreeupsomespaceonthediskandclickRetryor
selectanotherstoragedevice.Tochoosethelatteroption,clickBrowse...intheconfirmation
window.TheBrowseforDestinationwindowappears.
Theleftpaneshowsthestoragelocationsavailableonyourcomputer.Afteryouselectasuitable
location,assignanameforthefilethatwillcontaintheremainingdatabeingbackedup.Youcan
enterthenamemanually(forexample,"tail_end.tib")orusethefilenamegenerator(abuttontothe
rightoftheline).ThenclickOKand AcronisTrueImage2015HDwillcompletethebackup.
Ifbackupversionsbelongingtothesamebackup"chain"havebeensavedtodifferentdestinations,
AcronisTrueImage2015HDmaypromptyouforthelocationsofpreviousbackupversionsduring
datarecovery.Thismayoccurwhentheselectedbackupversiondoesnotcontainthefilesyouwant
torecover(orcontainsonlyapartofthem).Thismayalsohappenwhenyourecoverabackupthat
wassplitonthefly.
Ifyouhavebackupsthatarenotshowninthelist,youcanaddthemmanually.
Assignuniquenames(labels)toallpartitionsonyourharddrives.Thiswillmakefindingthedisk
containingyourbackupseasier.
WhenyouusetheAcronisTrueImage2015HDrescuemedia,itcreatesdiskdrivelettersthat
mightdifferfromthewayWindowsidentifiesdrives.Forexample,theD:diskidentifiedinthe
standaloneAcronisTrueImage2015HDmightcorrespondtotheE:diskinWindows.
Torecoveryoursystem:
1. Attachtheexternaldriveifitcontainsthebackuptobeusedforrecoveryandmakesurethatthe
driveispoweredon.
2. ArrangethebootorderinBIOSsoastomakeyourrescuemediadevice(CD,DVDorUSBstick)
thefirstbootdevice.SeeArrangingbootorderinBIOS(p.44).
3. BootfromtherescuemediaandselectTrueImage.
5. Selectthesystemdiskorpartitionbackuptobeusedforrecovery.
Whenthebackupisnotdisplayed,clickBrowseandspecifypathtothebackupmanually.
6. SelectRecoverwholedisksandpartitionsattheRecoverymethodstep.
7. Selectthesystempartition(usuallyC)ontheWhattorecoverscreen.Ifthesystempartitionhas
adifferentletter,selectthepartitionusingtheFlagscolumn.ItmusthavethePri,Actflags.
8. Atthe"SettingsofpartitionC"(ortheletterofthesystempartition,ifitisdifferent)stepcheck
thedefaultsettingsandclickNextiftheyarecorrect.Otherwise,changethesettingsasrequired
beforeclickingNext.Changingthesettingswillbeneededwhenrecoveringtothenewharddisk
ofadifferentcapacity.
9. CarefullyreadthesummaryofoperationsattheFinishstep.Ifyouhavenotresizedthepartition,
thesizesintheDeletingpartitionandRecoveringpartitionitemsmustmatch.Havingchecked
thesummaryclickProceed.
Torecoveryoursystemtoanewdisk:
1. Installthenewharddrivetothesamepositioninthecomputerandusethesamecableand
connectorthatwasusedfortheoriginaldrive.Ifthisisnotpossible,installthenewdriveto

8. SelectRecoverwholedisksandpartitionsattheRecoverymethodstep.
Selectingpartitionsleadstoappearanceoftherelevantsteps"Settingsofpartition...".Notethat
thesestepsstartwithpartitionswhichdonothaveanassigneddiskletter(asusuallyisthecase
withhiddenpartitions).Thepartitionsthentakeanascendingorderofpartitiondiskletters.This
ordercannotbechanged.Theordermaydifferfromthephysicalorderofthepartitionsonthe
harddisk.
10. OntheSettingsofthehiddenpartitionstep(usuallynamedSettingsofPartition11),specifythe
followingsettings:

RemovetherescuemediaandbootthecomputertoWindows.Itmayreportthatnewhardware
(harddrive)isfoundandWindowsneedstoreboot.Aftermakingsurethatthesystemoperates
normally,restoretheoriginalbootorder.
Torecoverpartitionsordisks:
