Week 5
Time Value
Aurally percieved music ( i.e. music played by instruments, or sung by human voices ) can be
visually represented by writen / printed symbols. This system of visual representation is called
NOTATION.
In music notation, time value indicates the duration of a note, ie how long or short a note is sounded.
Time value tells the musician, how much value to give to each kind of musical note.
The parts of the notation that indicate note duration include the shape and
colour of the note head, the presence or absence of a stem and the presence
or absence of flags. (Flags

are also known as beams, hooks, tails, etc.)

A rest is an interval of silence in music. Rests are also marked by music notation ( symbols) to
indicate how long the silence would last.

Name Note Symbols Rest Symbols Time Value

1. Semibreve 4 beats (or 4 counts )

2. Minim. 2 beats (counts)

Week 6
Pentatonic Scale
A scale is a series of notes, that follow an increasing or decreasing order in pitch. Examples of
scales in music are:
1. The diatonic scale; which is also known as the major scale;
do re mi fa so la ti do
alternatively, C D E F G A B C

2. The minor scale; simply a major scale that begins with la instead of do
la ti do re mi fa so la
alternatively, A B C D E F G A

3. The pentatonic scale.

The word pentatonic comes from the Greek word pente, meaning five and tonic
meaning tone. Simply put, it is a scale having 5 notes instead of the more common 8 notes. If
you play all the black notes on a piano, what you will hear is the pentatonic scale.

There are 2 basic forms of the pentatonic scale:

1. The major pentatonic scale; which consists of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th notes of a major
(diatonic) scale.
do re Mi so la
