CARBON DIOXIDE FIRE EXTINGUISHING

INSTALLATION
(New R u l e s i n force w i t i i effect f r o m 1976)

1. Storage Room for Carbon Dioxide Cylinder.

1. LOCATION :

The battery of c a r b o n dioxide c y l i n d e r s m u s t be stored i n a r o o m


s u r r o u n d e d by steel b u l k h e a d s a n d located i n a safe p o s i t i o n . In the event of
fire i n one of the spaces to be protected by the c a r b o n dioxide i n s t a l l a t i o n , the
access to the c a r b o n dioxide r o o m s s h a l l n o t be e a s i l y c u t off. The room i n
w h i c h the c y l i n d e r s are stored s h o u l d p r e f e r a b l y be a c c e s s i b l e from the o p e n
d e c k only a n d i n a n y case not t h r o u g h the engine r o o m .

2. B U L K H E A D S AMD A C C E S S DOOR.

If the r o o m referred to above a d j o i n s a c c o m m o d a t i o n or service spaces,


the b u l k h e a d s e p a r a t i n g t h e m m u s t be g a s t i g h t . If the b u l k h e a d h a s a door, it
m u s t be c l o s e d w i t h a gastight s e a l . If the r o o m referred to above adjoins a
space into w h i c h c a r b o n d i o x i d e m a y be a d m i t t e d , the s e p a r a t i n g b u l k h e a d
m u s t be also gastight. No door i s p e r m i t t e d i n t h i s b u l k h e a d .

3. VENTILATION.

A p p r o p r i a t e a r r a n g e m e n t s s h a l l be m a d e to e n s u r e p r o p e r v e n t i l a t i o n of
the r o o m i n w h i c h the C 0 2 battery i s s t o r e d . The v e n t i l a t i o n system m u s t
c o n s i s t of at least two v e n t i l a t i o n d u c t s w h i c h t e r m i n a t e i n the open air.

One of these d u c t s m u s t e x t e n d d o w n to floor level a n d m u s t have a cowl


o n deck. T h i s v e n t i l a a o n s y s t e m m u s t be c o m p l e t e l y separated from other
v e n t i l a t i o n systems, the v e n t i l a t i o n d u c t s s h a l l not be fitted w i t h m e a n s of
closure. These d u c t s m u s t have a n i n t e r n a l c r o s s - s e c t i o n of not less t h a n 5 0 0
square centimeters.

4. T E M P E R A T U R E :

A r r a n g e m e n t s s h a l l be m a d e to e n s u r e t h a t the temperature i n the r o o m


does not rise above 60 '^C n o r fall b e l o w O C.
5. A R R A N G E M E N T S OF CARBON D I O X I D E CYLINDERS :

To prevent corrosion the base of the c y l i n d e r s s h a l l be kept free from the


deck by p l a c i n g them o n s u p p o r t s .

The c y l i n d e r s m u s t be properly s e c u r e d , so t h a t they cannot be


d i s p l a c e d b y the m o t i o n of the s h i p a n d c a n n o t rotate. Devices as wooden
b e a m s or steel s t r a p s m a y be e m p l o y e d for the p u r p o s e . If steel straps are
u s e d , they m u s t be l i n e d w i t h r u b b e r or s o m e other s u i t a b l e material. The
a r r a n g e m e n t m u s t be s u c h that w h e n s t r a p s are r e m o v e d the cylinders are not
a l l released s i m u l t a n e o u s l y , they m u s t be r e l e a s e d i n g r o u p s w i t h a m a x i m u m
of 4 i n e a c h row.

II. Carbon Dioxide Cylinders :

6. CYLINDERS :

Si. The m a t e r i a l a n d design of c y l i n d e r s i n t e n d e d for c a r b o n dioxide fire


e x t i n g u i s h i n g i n s t a l l a t i o n s o n b o a r d s h i p s m u s t be of a type approved by the
Govt, of I n d i a a n d the cyHnders m u s t be d e s i g n e d , for a test pressure of not
less t h a n 2 5 0 Kgl7cm2. The c y l i n d e r d r a w i n g w i t h d a t a for c a l c u l a t i o n a n d
i n f o r m a t i o n o n the method of m a n u f a c t u r e m u s t be forwarded to the Director
G e n e r a l . If the cylinders are not tested u n d e r the s u p e r v i s i o n of a surveyor,
m a t e r i a l certificates, complete d a t a a n d test certificates m u s t be forwarded to
the D i r e c t o r G e n e r a l .

b. The foUowmg p a r t i c u l a r s m u s t be s t a m p e d o n e a c h carbon dioxide


cylinder :

- n a m e of m a n u f a c t u r e r or a b b r e v i a t i o n thereof.
- m a n u f a c t u r e r ' s n u m b e r or s e r i a l n u m b e r

-capacity of c y l i n d e r i n litres
-weight of m a x i m u m p e r m i t t e d q u a n t i t y of gas i n k g
-test p r e s s u r e i n kgf/cm2
-weight empty- i n k g ,

-date of test (month a n d year)
-stamp of i n s p e c t i n g body.

c. The fiUmg s t a t i o n m u s t i s s u e a s t a t e m e n t to the effect that each


c y l i n d e r is filled w i t h the p r e s c r i b e d q u a n t i t y of c a r b o n dioxide.
7. FILLING RATIO :

The term T I L L I N G R A T I O ' denotes the ratio b e t w e e n the weight of the


quajitity of c a r b o n dioxide i n the c y l i n d e r a n d the c a p a c i t y of the cyUnder in.
c u b i c decimeters.

A m a x i m u m filling ratio of 2/3 m u s t be o b s e r v e d for e a c h cylinder.

8. S A F E T Y DISCS:

E a c h c a r b o n dioxide m u s t be fitted w i t h a safety disc w i t h a b u r s t i n g


pressure of 0.9 times the test p r e s s u r e of the c y U n d e r .

Certificates m u s t be p r o d u c e d b y the m a n u f a c t u r e r to show that the


safety d i s c s are of approved type.

9. RISER T U B E .

The r i s e r tube fitted i n a c a r b o n d i o x i d e c y U n d e r m u s t be made of


copper, s t a i n l e s s steel or other a p p r o p r i a t e m a t e r i a l .

10. V A L V E S :

E a c h c a r b o n dioxide c y l i n d e r i n t e n d e d for u s e i n a fire e x t i n g u i s h i n g


i n s t a l l a t i o n for cargo h o l d s engine r o o m s , b o i l e r r o o m s a n d p u m p rooms m u s t
be fitted w i t h a q u i c k -release valve or p e r f o r a b l e d i a p h r a g m .

Where c a r b o n dioxide c y l i n d e r s are i n s t a l l e d s p e c i a l l y for use i n a fire


e x t i n g u i s h i n g i n s t a l l a t i o n for a u x i l i a r y b o i l e r s or e.xhaust gas a n d scavenging
a i r lines of two stroke engines they s h a l l be fitted w i t h a valve by m e a n s of
w h i c h the q u a n t i t y of c a r b o n d i o x i d e to be a d m i t t e d c a n be regulated a s
required.

III. CARBON DIOXIDE PIPING AND FITTINGS :

11. Design.

a(i) The system s h a l l be d e s i g n e d to d i s t r i b u t e the gas i n a satisfactory


m a n n e r . A separate s u p p l y m u s t be e n s u r e d to the lower hold a n d between
d e c k s of each cargo h o l d . In a s p a c e w i t h a l e n g t h of more t h a n 20 meters, the
s u p p l y line m u s t be d i v i d e d i n s u c h a w a y t h a t gas c a n be admitted to b o t h the
forward a n d the aft sections of the s p a c e .

(ii) Provisions s h a l l be m a d e for the effective d i s t r i b u t i o n of carbon


dioxide i n engine rooms a n d boHer r o o m s .
ENGINE ROOMS : nozzles m u s t a l w a y s be p r o v i d e d below the floor
p l a t i n g a a d above the floor p l a t i n g level w i t h the top of the c y l i n d e r s of the
m a i n engine or engines.

BOILER ROOMS: nozzle m u s t be fitted below or r o u n d the boilers :


a d d i t i o n a l nozzles m u s t be p r o v i d e d if the b u r n e r s are o n the top of the boilers.

b. C a r b o n dioxide p i p e s m u s t not r u n t h r o u g h t a n k s or cold and


refrigerating r o o m s .

c. Pipes designed to c a r r y c a r b o n d i o x i d e into a h o l d w h i c h m a y be u s e d


alternately to c a r r y passengers or cargo m u s t be b l a n k e d of! w i t h a spectacle
flange whenever the h o l d i s being u s e d for p a s s e n g e r t r a n s p o r t .

If the cool giving access to these p o s i t i o n s c a n be l o c k e d , the key m u s t


be h u n g v i s i b l y i n the i m m e d i a t e v i c i n i t y of t h e door i n a r e d box w i t h a pane
w h i c h c a n be easily b r o k e n . The valves a n d c o c k s m u s t be m a r k e d i n s u c h a
way that it i s clear to w h i c h sections of the s h i p the p i p e s l e a d .

The effective a p p e r t u r e s of the v a l v e s a n d c o c k s m u s t be at least


equivalent to those of the p i p e s to w h i c h they are fitted.

A stop c o c k m u s t be fitted i n e a c h m a i n p i p e r u n n i n g from the c a r b o n


dioxide battery to the engine r o o m , boiler r o o m or p u m p r o o m .

A stop c o c k m u s t also be fitted i n the s u p p l y line from the c a r b o n


dio.xide battery to a n y s m o k e detection or d i s t r i b u t o r box; it m u s t be located i n
the room i n w h i c h the battery i s stored.

e. The s t o p c o c k s i n c a r b o n d i o x i d e p i p e s l e a d i n g to deep t a n k s m u s t be
located as n e a r as p o s s i b l e to e a c h other. T h e h a n d w h e e l s a n d / o r c o n t r o l
h a n d l e s of these valves m u s t be p a i n t e d a b r i g h t c o l o u r a n d m u s t be
removable.

If the deep t a n k s are filled w i t h a l i q u i d the s t o p c o c k s m u s t bear a plate


w i t h the w o r d s ''deep t a n k f u l l " .

The open ends of the c a r b o n dioxide p i p e s i n the deep t a n k s m u s t be


closed by m e a n s of a n o n - r e t u r n vavle of a n a p p r o v e d type or a safety^ disc w i t h
a low b u r s t i n g p r e s s u r e i n order to prevent the l i q u i d from getting into the
pipes.

If the safety d i s c s are u s e d , the m a t e r i a l m u s t be resistant to c o r r o s i o n


by the Liquids being t r a n s p o r t e d a n d the amticipated temperature.
f. A n o n - r e t u r n valve m u s t be fitted between e a c h carbon dioxide
c y l i n d e r a n d the m a n i f o l d .

g. If the safety d i s c s referred to i n 8 above d i s c h a r g e into the c a r b o n


dioxide m a n i f o l d , a s p r i n g loader safety vavle m u s t be fitted to the pipe so that
the p r e s s u r e i n it c a n never exceed 9 times the test p r e s s u r e of the c a r b o n
dioxide c y l i n d e r s . The safety valve m u s t d i s c h a r g e into the o p e n air.

h . A p r e s s u r e gauge m u s t be fitted to the m a n i f o l d of the c a r b o n dioxide


equipment.

I. The c a r b o n dioxide e q u i p m e n t m u s t be p r o v i d e d w i t h a fitting to


enable the s y s t e m to be b l o w n t h r o u g h p e r i o d i c a l l y w i t h a i r at a pressure of at
least 6 k g f / c m 2 .

T h i s fitting m u s t be p r o v i d e d w i t h a s c r e w d o w n n o n - r e t u r n valve or a
valve c o m b i n e d w i t h a n o n - r e t u r n valve.

j . I f p n e u m a t i c a l l y operated valves are u s e d , a n a i r c o n n e c t i o n m u s t be
available to test the valve. C l e a r i n s t r u c t i o n s m u s t be given for testing.

k. A safety disc h a v i n g a l o w b u r s t i n g p r e s s u r e m u s t be provided for


e x h a u s t gas p i p e s a n d s c a v e n g i n g a i r p i p e s at the p i n t where the c a r b o n
dioxide p i p e s emerge into the s p a c e s m e n t i o n e d t h i s safety d i s c m u s t be able to
r e s i s t the h i g h e s t temperature expected i n these spaces.

12. PIPE CONNECTIONS :

a. The threaded sections of p i p e s a n d fittings m u s t taper slightiy (1:16).

b. Subject to the p r o v i s i o n s of a b e l o w , aU fittings u s e d i n the h i g h


p r e s s u r e section of the c a r b o n d i o x i d e s y s t e m m u s t be m a d e of steel. Tape of
suitable q u a l i t y m u s t b e u s e d to s e a l t h r e a d e d sockets, T pieces a n d taper
fittings.

c. AU j o i n t s i n c a r b o n d i o x i d e s u p p l y p i p e s that r u n t h r o u g h
a c c o m m o d a t i o n spaces a n d are l i a b l e to c o m e u n d e r p r e s s u r e as a result of
leakage or some other c a u s e m u s t be

d. A n y threaded s e c t i o n s e x p o s e d to the o p e n a i r m u s t be protected


against c o r r o s i o n on c o m p l e t i o n of the p r e s s u r e test.
13. M A T E R I A L S FOR T H E DIMENSIONS O F PIPES:

a. C a r b o n dioxide pipes m u s t be m a d e a t h i c k w a l l e d , seamless d r a w n


or welded steel. The pipes m u s t be g a l v a n i z e d i n t e r n a l l y a n d e.xtemally. The
w a l l t h i c k n e s s , w h i c h is a f u n c t i o n of the pipe d i a m e t e r m u s t not be less t h a n
that given i n the table o n the following page.

b. P i p e s to engine r o o m or b o i l e r r o o m s a n d the nozzles b e l o n g m g to


t h e m m u s t of s u c h d i m e n s i o n s as w i l l a l l o w 9 5 percent of the p r e s c r i b e d
q u a n t i t y of gas to be a d m i t t e d to the s p a c e c o n c e r n e d w i t h i n two m i n u t e s . The
above r e q u i r e m e n t s w i l l be regarded as h a v i n g b e e n satisfied i n respect of the
m a i n s u p p l y Unes if they have the m i n i m u m c r o s s - s e c t i o n given i n the table:

c. Pipes to cargo h o l d s a n d the n o z z l e s b e l o n g i n g to them m u s t be


s u c h d i m e n s i o n s as wiU allow the p r e s c r i b e d q u a n t i t y of gas to be a d m i t t e d
into the s p a c e s concerned w i t h i n t e n m i n u t e s .

d. The pipes c o n n e c t i n g the c y l i n d e r s to the m a n i f o l d m u s t be of the


t h i c k - w a l l e d , seamless d r a w n steel type or s e a m l e s s d r a w n copper. Sufficient
p r o v i s i o n for e x p a n s i o n m u s t b e m a d e i n these Unes i n order to prevent
breakage d u e to v i b r a t i o n .

14. O T H E R FITTINGS.

a. A l l s t o p c o c k s valves n o n r e t u r n v a l v e s a n d s p r i n g loaded safety valves


m u s t be m a d e of steel, bronze or n o d u l a r c a s t i r o n of a n approved q u a l i t y .
S t o p c o c k s a n d valves m u s t be d e s i g n e d i n s u c h a way t h a t :

I. The cover plate w i l l not u n s c r e w w h e n they are opened.


ii. It is possible to see from the o u t s i d e w h e t h e r they are open or closed.
iii. They c a n be opened e a s i l y even u n d e r a p r e s s u r e of 190 kgf/cm2.
A certificate m u s t be i s s u e d by the m a n u f a c t u r e r i n d i c a t i n g the type a n d
s e r i a l n u m b e r a n d s h o w i n g that the s t o p c o c k s v a l v e s a n d n o n e t u m valves have
been tested for leakage.

b. The effective of the n o n r e t u r n v a l v e s referred to i n 1 I f m u s t be at


least e q u a l to that of the s t o p c o c k o n the c y l i n d e r .

c. The s p r i n g l o a d e d safety' valve referred to i n l l g m u s t start to


discharge at a p r e s s u r e of 1 8 0 k g f / c m 2 .

d. The p r e s s u r e gauge referred to i n l l h m u s t be c a p a b l e of m e a s u r i n g


pressure upto 250 kgf/cm2.

e. If devices are p r o v i d e d w i t h m e a n s to d r a i n off water, they must


operate a u t o m a t i c a l l y a n d be of approved type.

IV. OPERATION :

15. Instruction :

A n i n s t r u c t i o n plate m u s t be d i s p l a y e d i n the r o o m c o n t a i n i n g the


battery of c a r b o n dioxide c y l i n d e r s . It m u s t i n d i c a t e :

a. The t o t a l m i n i m u m q u a n t i t y of c a r b o n d i o x i d e r e q u i r e d for the s h i p .


b. The c a l c u l a t e d n u m b e r of c y l i n d e r s for e a c h of the spares.
c. The m a n n e r i n w h i c h the c a r b o n d i o x i d e m u s t be admitted to the
spaces referred to i n b above w i t h due r e g a r d for the q u a n t i t y a n d n a t u r e of
the cargo c a r r i e d i n t h e m .

16. OPERATING C A B L E S AND S E R V O . CYLINDERS.

To meet the r e q u i r e m e n t t h a t 8 5 p e r c e n t of the p r e s c r i b e d quantity of


gas m u s t be a d m i t t e d to the engine r o o m or b o i l e r r o o m w i t h i n 2 m i n u t e s , the
c a r b o n dioxide c y l i n d e r s m u s t be fitted w i t h o p e r a t i n g cables c o m b i n e d w i t h
servo-cyUnders. If necessary, so that the r e q u i r e d n u m b e r of C 0 2 cylinders c a n
be opened s i m u l t a n e o u s l y .

F o r t h i s p u r p o s e the h a n d l e s of the c l o s u r e devices on the mvolved


c y l i n d e r s m u s t be securely c o u p l e d together w i t h c a b l e s so that the groups of
cyUnder formed i n t h i s way c a n be opened s i m u l t a n e o u s l y .

The operating a n d c o n n e c t i n g c a b l e s m u s t be m a d e of material suitable


for the p u r p o s e a n d m u s t be protected a g a i n s t c o r r o s i o n .
The o p e r a t i n g cables m u s t be c o m p l e t e l y protected against accidental
contact i n order to prevent a c c i d e n t a l o p e r a t i o n of c a r b o n dioxide i n s t a l l a t i o n .

The d i m e n s i o n s of the servo c y l i n d e r s m u s t be s u c h that the c a r b o n


dioxide c y l i n d e r s connected to t h e m c a n be o p e n e d s i m u l t a n e o u s l y at zero
degrees centigrade.

The servo c y l i n d e r s m u s t d i s c h a r g e d i r e c t l y into the open air. A throttle


flange m u s t be fitted i n the d i s c h a r g e line of servo c y l i n d e r cormected i n
p a r a l l e l i n order to prevent p r e m a t u r e d r o p s i n p r e s s u r e .

17. PILOT CYLINDERS :

Pilot c y l i n d e r s m u s t be u s e d to a c t u a t e the servo c y l i n d e r s .


There m u s t be at least two p i l o t c y l i n d e r s at e a c h operating position. The
capacity of e a c h of the3e c y l i n d e r s m u s t be sufficient to open the battery
connected to the involved servo c y H n d e r s .

Pilot cyUnders i n a c c o m m o d a t i o n s p a c e s m u s t be p l a c e d i n a steel recess


fitted w i t h a well-fitting steel door t h a t c a n be l o c k e d . T h e key m u s t be h u n g
v i s i b l y i n the i m m e d i a t e v i c i n i t y of the d o o r i n a r e d b o x w i t h a n easily
b r e a k a b l e p a n e . The door m u s t also be g a s t i g h t i f a p i l o t cylinder c o n t a i n s
more t h a n 6 k g of c a r b o n d i o x i d e . In t h i s c a s e the r e c e s s m u s t have one or
more ventilator d u c t s t e r m i n a t i n g i n the o p e n a i r .

A safety device (leakage valve) of a n a p p r o v e d type m u s t be fitted to the


pipe r u r m i n g from the pilot c y l i n d e r s to t h e servo c y l i n d e r or cylinders to
prevent p r e s s u r e to be buUt u p i n t h i s p i p e i n the event of a stopcock or pilot
c y l i n d e r l e a k i n g a n d a c t u a t i n g the servo c y l i n d e r or c y U n d e r prematurely.

If q u i c k a c t i n g s t o p c o c k s or perforable d i a p h r a g m are u s e d to see pilot


cyUnders, a n a d d i t i o n a l s t o p c o c k m u s t be fitted i n the pipe from the pilot
cyUnders to the servo cyUnders. It m u s t be c o u p l e d to the h a n d l e s of the pUot
c y l i n d e r s so that both the p i l o t c y U n d e r s a n d the a d d i t i o n a l stopcock c a n be
opened w i t h a single.

The leakage valve m u s t be fitted b e t w e e n the a d d i t i o n stopcock a n d the


vo-cyUnder or cyUnders.

A s p r i n g loaded reUef valve set to 180 k g f / c m 2 m u s t be fitted between


pilot cyUnders fitted w i t h perforabel d i a p h r a g m s a n d the a d d i t i o n a l stopcock.

V. SAFETY ARRANGEMENTS.

18. ENGINE ROOMS, BOILER R O O M S fis PUMP ROOMS.

The s y s t e m to a d m i t c a r b o n dio.xide i n t o engine r o o m s , boiler r o o m s a n d


p u m p r o o m s m u s t be s u c h that a n a u d i b l e a l a r m m u s t go off i n those spaces
before c a r b o n dioxide c a n be a d m i t t e d .

Two i n d e p e n d e n t operations m u s t t h e n be c a r r i e d out to a d m i t the


c a r b o n dioxide viz.

i . o p e n i n g the stopcock for the space affected.


i i . o p e n i n g the appropriate g r o u p s of c y l i n d e r s .

C l e a r operating i n s t r u c t i o n s m u s t be d i s p l a y e d i n the v i c i n i t y of e a c h
operating p o s i t i o n .

19. A L A R M SYSTEM :

A l a r m devices u s e d i n engine r o o m s , b o i l e r r o o m s a n d p u m p rooms


specified i n 18 above m u s t be electrically o p e r a t e d .

If the a l a r m is trigged by a door s w i t c h i t m u s t be i m p o s s i b l e to close the


door w h e n the stopcock i s open. S i n c e electrically operated a l a r m s m a y not be
fitted i n p u m p r o o m s a n a l a r m device m u s t be u s e d w h i c h is a c t u a t e d
electrically at a safe p o s i t i o n o u t s i d e the r o o m . T h e s y s t e m m u s t be of a n
approved type.

A l a r m s devices i n a n y p a r t of the engine r o o m s , propeller shaft t u n n e l s


a n d boiler r o o m s m u s t be of s u c h a type a n d located i n s u c h p o s i t i o n s that
they c a n be h e a r d clearly even w h e n the engine is o p e r a t i n g at fuU l o a d .

V a r i a b l e p i t c h s i r e n m u s t be u s e d to d i s t i n g u i s h it from aU other a l a r m
systems i n the above m e n t i o n e d s p a c e s . T h e e l e c t r i c a l a l a r m system m u s t be
connected to the emergency power s u p p l y .

20. WORKING SPACES 8B C O N T R O L R O O M S :

e. The proper operation a n d correct c o n n e x i o n s to the cargo h o l d s to he


checked.

f. The free flow of c a r b o n d i o x i d e out of the nozzles into the engine r o o m ,


boiler r o o m or p u m p r o o m to be c h e c k e d b y o p e n i n g one or more cyUnders of
the battery or by u s i n g a i r at a m i n i m u m p r e s s u r e of 2 5 k g f / c m 2 .

g. The entire i n s t a U a t i o n to be checked to make sure that it is


operational.

h . The h i g h p r e s s u r e s e c t i o n s u c h c a n be s h u t off, the stopcocks a n d the


c o n t r o l to be c h e c k e d for r i g h t n e s s u n d e r o p e r a t i o n a l c o n d i t i o n s by o p e n i n g
one cyUnder of the battery. T h i s c h e c k m a y be o m i t t e d if the e q u i p m e n t i s
i n t e n d e d solely for the engine r o o m a n d c o n s i s t s of n o t more t h a n 15 cyUnders.

2 4 . W h e n extensive r e p a i r s o r m o d i f i c a t i o n s are c a r r i e d out, the p a r t of


the c a r b o n dioxide fire e x t i n g u i s h i n g e q u i p m e n t i n v o l v e d m u s t be subjected to
the tests d e s c r i b e d m 23 above, i n so far as t h e y are appUcable.

2 5 . At inter/als of not m o r e t h a n 5 y e a r s , a c a r b o n dioxide fire


e x t i n g u i s h i n g i n s t a l l a t i o n m u s t be s u b j e c t e d to the tests described i n 2 3 b,e,g.
The s p r i n g - l o a d e d safety valves referred to i n 11 g a n d i n the final p a r a g r a p h of
17 m u s t also be checked a n d reset to 180 k g f / c m 2 . The a l a r m system m u s t be
tested to m a k e sure that it f u n c t i o n s p r o p e r l y .

2 6 . At intervals of not m o r e t h a n 10 y e a r s , the section of a c a r b o n


dioxide fire e x t i n g u i s h g i n g s y s t e m w h i c h c a n be s h u t off m u s t be tested w i t h
c a r b o n dioxide or air at a m i n i m u m p r e s s u r e of 2 5 k g f / c m 2 .

2 7 . After 15 years a n d at i n t e r v a l s of 5 y e a r s thereafter a c a r b o n dioxide


Fire e x t i n g u i s h i n g i n s t a U a t i o n m u s t be s u b j e c t e d to a l l the tests described m 2 3
above.
IX INSPECTION.

2 8 . At intervals of 2 4 m o n t h s the w h o l e i n s t a l l a t i o n m u s t be i n s p e c t e d
e.xtemally to the extent that t h i s is p o s s i b l e a n d b l o w n t h r o u g h w i t h air.

X. PERIODICAL INSPECTION O F C A R B O N DIOXIDE CYLINDERS :

2 9 . E a c h c a r b o n dioxide c y l i n d e r m u s t be i n s p e c t e d i n t e r n a l l y a n d
externally at intervals of 10 y e a r s a n d tested at the p r e s c r i b e d p r e s s u r e . The
date of testing a n d stamp m u s t be p l a c e d o n the c y l i n d e r .

3 0 . C a r b o n dioxide cyHnders w h i c h e x h i b i t a p e r m a n e n t increase i n


v o l u m e after being pressure tested m u s t be c o n d e m e n e d .

1. Before refilling, the r i s e r tube m u s t be i n s p e c t e d v i s u a l l y .

The valve m u s t also be tested for g a s - t i g h t n e s s a n d if appropriate-ensure


that it is m o v a b l e .

3 2 . A statement m u s t be i s s u e d b y the f i l l i n g s t a t i o n to the effect that


e a c h cyHnder is fHled w i t h the p r e s c r i b e d q u a n t i t y of c a r b o n dioxide.

XI- PERIODICAL C H E C K O F T H E GAS C O N T E N T O F CARBON DIOXIDE


CYLINDERS.

3 3 . The gas content of e a c h c a r b o n d i o x i d e cyHnder m u s t be c h e c k e d at


intervals of not more t h a n 2 y e a r s b y w e i g h i n g or i n some other m a n n e r , a
m a x i m u m weight r e d u c t i o n of 5 percent m a y be a l l o w e d , provided the total
q u a n t i t y of c a r b o n dioxide is never less t h a n the p r e s c r i b e d m i n i m u m .

3 4 . E q u i p m e n t for w e i g h i n g e a c h c y H n d e r m u s t be available on b o a r d .

If a level detector e m p l o y i n g r a d i o a c t i v e r a d i a t i o n i s u s e d to c h e c k the


cyHnders, t h i s equipment m u s t be removed fromt he s h i p before sailing.
