5. Descriptions of Operation
ln order to prepare electro-pneumatic circuit diagram, pneumatic circuit diagram shall be
prepared at first. This is because electric circuit can be changed significantly according to
whelher electromagnetic valve to control cylinder is single or double.
Circuit 4-1 shows configuration diagram to control pneumatic single acting cylinder using 3
ports 2 positions single electromagnetic valve. Circuit 4-2 and 4-3 show electric circuits to
control pneumatic cylinder.
a direct control circuit. Turning push button switch PBl ON, solenoid is excited
Circuit 4-2 is
to convert valve, and cylinder moves lorward. When push button is released, solenoid is
disconnected. So, valve returns to original position to move cylinder backward.
Circuit 4-3 is a circuit lo control electromagnetic valve by relaying signal with relay.

6. Exercises
1) ln C jrcuit 4-3, cylinder advances only when push button is pressed. Prepare circuit where
cylinder keeps advancing even if push button is released and returns only when signal lor
backward movement is given.

5. Descriptions of Operation

ln order to control pneumatic double acting cylinder, 4 ports or 5 ports valve is required.
Pneumatic circuit diagram in circuit 4-4 is a conliguration diagram ol circuit to control double
acling cylinder with 5 ports 2 positions single electromagnetic valve and circuit 4-5 is a control
circuit.
ln circuit 4-5, when push button switch PB1 is pressed, it is in magnetic latching and cylinder
moves Jorward.
Turning PB2 ON to release magnetic latching, valve returns to original position and cylinder
moves backward. Therefore, magnetic latching circuit is required for controlling cylinder with
single electromagnetic valve.

5. Descriptions of Operation

For double electromagnetic valve to control pneumatic cylinder, valve maintains certain state
even if corresponding signal is removed until opposite signal is input. Thus, magnetic latching
circuit is not required necessarily in this Valve as in single electromagnelic Valve.
Circuit 4-7 is a direct conlrol circurt where pressing push button switch PB1 moves cylinder
forward and PB2 moves cylinder backward. lf both of PB1 and PB2 are pressed synchronously,
double solenoid of electromagnetic valve are excited and cylinder remains in such state.
However, long energizing time may cause burning ol solenoid. lnter-lock circuit as in circuit 4-B
shall be configurated in order to prevent this. ln circuit 4-8, inter-lock circuit is employed so that
R2 cannot be excited while R1 is ON and Rl cannot be operated while R2 is ON. But, in the
above two circuits, operating time to press push button shall be long enough lo excite solenoid
and to conve( valve.
