About the V.B.Z. Literary Prize


for the Best Unpublished Novel of the Year
We would like to draw your attention to the winning novels and authors of the V.B.Z.
Contest for the best unpublished novel of the year. The contest was organized in
2002 at the V.B.Z.s initiative with the aim of increasing interest for prose writing and
prose reading in Croatia. During a period of seven years of its existence this contest
has become one of the most important literary contests and cultural events in this part
of the world. Moreover, it has a prize with the biggest prize fond for cultural achieve-
ments in Croatia. The jury consists of the renowned Croatian writers Miljenko Jergovi
(Chairman of the jury), Zoran Feri and Julijana Matanovi, a literary critic Strahimir
Primorac, and Vladimir Arsenijevi, editor and writer from Serbia.

During these seven years the V.B.Z. Prize for the Best Unpublished Novel of the Year
has become one of the most important literary events in Croatia. A large media inter-
est for this literary prize is a result of two key points an exceptional prize fond of HRK
100.000 which makes it the biggest prize fond in the Croatian culture in general, and the
fact that the contest is anonymous, which promotes the principle of equality.

The writers who have won at the Contest so far, and whose novels were elected among
more than a hundred manuscripts that many arrive for the Contest every year, have
been given excellent reviews from the professionals from the public life as well as a good
reception of readers from this part of the world.

Josip Mlaki: ALIVE AND DEAD


Josip Mlaki was born in Bugojno in 1964, he got a de-
gree in mechanical engineering in Sarajevo and today
lives in Gornji Vakuf Uskoplje (Bosnia and Herzegovina).
His debut novel When Fogs Stop (Kad magle stanu),
2000 put him in the top of Croatian war prose authors.
In 2002 he won the V.B.Z. Literary Prize for the Best
Unpublished Novel for his manuscript Alive and Dead
(ivi i mrtvi). The same novel was later awarded a literary
prize Ksaver andor Gjalski. A film, directed by Kristijan
Mili, was made after the script of the novel, and was the
absolute winner of the Pula Film Festival in 2007. The film
was awarded with as many as 8 Arenas including the
one for the best film. It has also won a Golden Camera,
the main prize at the International festival of lm cam-
era in Bitola, Macedonia (cameraman Dragan Markovi),
and at Belgrades FEST in 2008 it won the first prize in
the contest part of the program Europe outside Europe.
Mlaki is an author of a few film scripts, too. In 2007,
in the edition of V.B.Z. publishers, he had his latest novel
Following the Trace of a Snakes Skin (Tragom zmijske
kouljice) published.

Alive and Dead short synopsis
Similar to his debut novel When Fogs Stop (written in 2000),
which put him on the top among Croatian war prose authors,
Josip Mlaki writes his prose colored with many literary and film
associations in his novel Alive and Dead. Moreover, in this novel
Mlaki challenges the mere essence of war much more ambi-
tiously, so this novel is written in even darker, more hopeless and
depressing atmosphere, completely dedicated to the metaphys-
ical dimension of war.
Alive and Dead shows two parallel war stories with a time
gap of half a century but which are connected by the war in the
same Bosnian region, as well as with the family ties among the
main characters. The first story takes place during the Croatian-
Bosnian conflict, during which a group of HVO soldiers make a
retreat towards the majority of their troops through the moun-
tains wasteland. In the second story a group of about ten do-
mobrans (the Croatian Home Guardsmen), lead by two Croatian
1220, 209 p. ustasas, are moving in a truck towards the same mountain area
so as to destroy a group of partisans who had made a retreat
there after a battle. Destiny will decide that a domobran Martin and his grandson, a HVO
soldier should take the same road. In both cases they must cross Grobno polje, a place
which connects the dead and the alive.
Mlaki, being a new important name of Croatian literature, in this novel looks up to
the modernist role models (firstly at Bulgakov, Kundera and Lenz), ambitiously combining
genres of war novel and horror and developing what soon became his own well known,
original and homogenous style.

Marinko Koec: WONDERLAND
Marinko Koec was born in Zagreb in 1967. His
first novel Island Under the Sea (Otok pod morem),
1999 presents a happy synthesis of political news,
literary references, a Monty-Python-like humor and
emotions which managed to get its author the title
of a writer with an intellectual point of view.
With his second novel Somebody Else (Netko
drugi), 2001, Marinko Koec became the first lau-
reate of a literary award Mea Selimovi.
The novel Wonderland is the winner of V.B.Z.
Prize for the Best Unpublished Novel for the year
2003. Koec is also a translator of the works of
modern French writers (Michel Houellebecq Ex ten-
sion of the Domain of the Struggle, 2001 and Elementary Particles, 2002) as well as the au-
thor of literary critical analysis about them Sketches for the Portrait of the Contemporary
French Prose (Skice za portret suvremene francuske proze), 2003.

Wonderland short synopsis


The main character of the novel is a university professor who makes up for the void in his life
and for his insecurity by fantasizing about almost everything from
the world that surrounds him. His life, however, is not empty.
There are plenty of things that happen and potential for en-
ergetic and creative emptying, both at work and at home; the
potentials of his university and scientific career are intertwined
with his comfortably played role of a husband and a future
parent. Family relations and relations with his colleagues at
work are very harmonious but still, it becomes clear very early
in the book that something is wrong. That something is gradu-
ally built from little pieces of his everyday life, and as the novel
progresses, those pieces more and more depict the times of
alienation, shallowness, anti-intellectuality, non-culture, in-
humanity and other gifts of our time. However, the character
made by Koec finds the world increasingly disgusting but he
does not react to it violently, but by his spirit, his imagination,
by withdrawing in himself and building of another world, not
more human or more in order but the world of his own, where

he is his own boss. The final scene of idyllic fishing is here as if he wants to put the full
stop to the mental development of the main character through those few months in which
Wonderland is set: while on the outside he is just one of many, within the troubled waters
of his own self he has found peace.
And in his third novel, Wonderland, a sort of a confession of a Zagreb University pro-
fessor, Marinko Koec repeats his figures of existential anxiety. Already recognized as
a marvelous stylist, Koec in Wonderland subtly introduces humor and irony, so this
novel can be perceived as an ironic commentary on the current, so called realistic prose
as well. The critiques have already been used to compare the poetics of Marinko Koec
to the one of Michael Houellebecq; however, Wonderland by mere innuendo to Thomas
Pynchons famous novel shows that the referential frame by this author is not that simple.
Besides, Koec owes to Michael Houellebecq approximately the same as he owes to,
lets say, Ranko Marinkovi or Slobodan Novak.
Wonderland is Koecs mature romanesque work which promotes him into one of
the most important young Croatian novel writers of today.

by occasional usage of colloquialisms and functional styles, but above all
by breaking down the whole mosaic through the ironic consciousness of
the main character, Koec managed to make the story dramatic and to

prose works. This by all means is his best book so far.

Jelena Markovi: CUTLERY FOR THE VEAL
Jelena Markovi was born in aak in 1975. She got a
degree in philosophy in Belgrade, and today she lives in
Belgrade.
In 2001 her drama called Criticism of the Pure
Reason in the Balkan Manner was performed at the
Theater m.b.H. in Vienna.

Cutlery for the Veal short synopsis


The first novel by Jelena Markovi (1975) Cutlery for the Veal
is a witty and nostalgic prose made up of a string of care-
fully constructed sequences in which behind what seem to be
ticklish stories about sex machines, madmen, publishers, film
directors, a vulnerable female personality is hidden. She tells
us the story about several kinds of her own loneliness. Jelena
Markovi appears as a brand new voice in the female writing.
Cutlery for the Veal is an original, charming and readable ma-
terial which the readers were waiting for a very long time.

Davor pii: KOLJIVO*
Davor pii was born in Osijek in 1961. A dramatist and
a prose writer. pii lives in Osijek and works as a profes-
sional writer. His dramas are: Welcome to War! (1992, HNK
in Osijek), Edges, A Year of Good Harvest (1998, SKUC
Osijek), Emilia at Night, Kings of the End, Mama Luna, Jug
2 (Marin Dri award in 2001, premiered in HNK Osijek in
2003), Dry Inn (based upon P. Bruckners prose works),
Kaue, Berlin, Charlie, Karaoke Show (radio premiere on
the Croatian radio in 2004), Medena. Scene plays for chil-
dren: A Christmas Eve in a Garage (1999, Childrens Theatre
in Osijek), Turbo Baby (2004, Childrens Theatre in Osijek),
Mission: T (2005, Croatian Theatre in Pecz, Hungary). His
dramas have been published in books such as: Foreplay, A
Heaven without Lights Off, and Berlin, Charlie.

Koljivo short synopsis


An award-winning novel by Davor pii is a story about an
immigrant from former Yugoslavia who finds refuge in Swe-
den at the beginning of the war. The main character, a broken
down actor Radovan Pintar starts a new life in the new envi-
ronment he gets married to an Iranian doctor and has a son,
but he also loses jobs, patience and hope at an enormous
speed. Events that follow are intertwined with both humor
and depression, and skillfully woven in a composition with the
descriptions of the main characters past, i.e. the past of his
(broad) family. It embellishes the core of the story in a special
way, by unobtrusively profiling an unusual personality of the
main character who, no matter how much he runs, cannot
escape from the evil.
Written in the manner of Stephen Kings best suspense
novels, dynamically and easily read, at the same time referring
to the newly actual tradition of a family novel, which the motto
of the novel can testify to since it was taken from Corrections
by Jonathan Franzen, the novel Koljivo depicts a destroyed

life of a member of an East European ethnic group in far away and strange surroundings,

in an especially original way. By distancing himself from literary stereotypes, Davor pii
successfully finds his own original narrating voice in a peculiar combination of sarcasm
and melodrama, which brings the novel Koljivo in a position of an ambitious novel which
has all prerequisites to become a pure bestseller.

Nura Bazdulj-Hubijar: WHEN IT WAS JULY

Nura Bazdulj-Hubijar was born in 1951; she is one of


the most read and most productive contemporary fe-
male authors from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
She is the author of anthological texts from childrens
literature so her novels (Rose, What is your Problem,
Tamagoochi, Tamagoochi has a Drug Problem), stories
and poems for children (Stories about Letters) are inclu-
ded in school text books and obligatory school reading
in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Her works have been translated into the German, En-
glish, Dutch, Norwegian, Hungarian and Slovak language.
She has been awarded numerous times for her literary
achievements and her work. In 1998 she was awarded
with Women of the year prize in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
She won a Soros award at an anonymous contest for the novel of the year (I Am So Sorry).
In 1999 she won an award for her radio play A Saber and a Feather (RTV Bosna and
Herzegovina) and in 2002 she was acknowledged as the Childrens writer of the year...

When it was July short synopsis
An epistolary novel about Srebrenica When it was July by Nura
Bazdulj-Hubijar is a story about a boy named Mirza who writes
letters to his dead father about the happenings in 1995 in the
most unprotected secured zone in the modern world. Letters
to his father are easily read as painfully precise letters ad-
dressed to the World, which enhance the impression about a
tragic human history.
The novel was written in the shape of an inner monologue
from the point of view of the main character that persistently
uses East Bosnian dialect and persistently makes spelling
mistakes, such as capital and lower case letters in wrong
places, full stops and commas, and some other basic spell-
ing rules. Such story-telling by the main character, empowered
by folk wisdom and events from pre-war times successfully
made an impression, which was the writers intent to make
him a pure and a naive character to whom destiny will be kind
1220, 160 p. in the end, regardless of the horrifying beginning. The novel
results with such overflow of emotions that we need to give
Nura Bazdulj-Hubijar credit for the skill of incorporating it smoothly and simply.
An extraordinary and touching story was told in an original language a sort of a
cross between East Bosnian idioms and the story tellers private language. Without any
referent frame, a short novel When it was July is unique in expression, emancipated from
comparison, self-sufficient and inventive voice of Literature as the answer to the demons
of the times and the world which testifies.

We are talking about shocking and dramatic prose work, which can hardly
be compared to the prose patterns of describing events from the history.
It tells us about one of the most traumatic experiences of contemporary
history in this part of the world. In spite of the seriousness of the topic and
a load of moral life-related questions which arise while reading this novel,

When it was July by Nura Bazdulj-Hubijar is a story about a boy named


Mirza who writes letters to his dead father about the happenings in 1995

A manual for Tourism, Stirring Muddy Waters and Searching for Dreams

Hrvoje alkovi was born in Zagreb in 1973.


He got a degree in journalism at the Political
sciences, and worked as a sports journalist for
some time. After coming to London to improve
his knowledge of English, he stayed in England
for three years and enrolled himself into the
postgraduate study at Westminster University,
where he graduated in the year 2000.
During those London days alkovi writes
his first stories, which he publishes upon his
return to Zagreb in his own edition under the ti-
tle com.opanci.com.obojci. After that he writes
the novel Fallen Card. alkovis lively biogra-
phy continues with a list of interesting jobs he
has done almost everything. He was a pollster,
a traveling salesman, a rally-driver, a journalist,
a carpet cleaner, a security guard at concerts, assistant storekeeper, a delivery trucker,
and now he is general manager of a family iron company. In 2007 V.B.Z. published his
novel Rabbit on the Moon. Today he lives in Zagreb.

Pretend You Did Not See This short synopsis


Novel Pretend You Did Not See this owes a lot to on the road
poetics, adventure novel tradition, to new-age ideologies and
hedonistic western rituals of urban daily life in the broadest
sense. Even though in the subtitle it calls us on it without con-
straints, extremely not inclined to the doctrine of tourist agen-
cies, this really is an anti-tourist material which for its goal has
travel as a strategy which every standstill must be subdued to
while life passes us by.
Domagoj Krugman, the main character, is a typical loser
he drives rich nerds in a taxi in Melbourne (or in any other
city in the world) and wastes his life guided by nothing at
first glance, suffers from chronically social lack of trust and
a routine life momentum, until Charlie comes into his life, a
cool dude who takes him with himself to travel to the West.
The only landmark they have on their trip is an escape from
boredom and a fight with it when it starts to take over.

mostly does not make sense if you wait for it to come along,

sleepy selfhood that hides until something gets it started. The miles that are left behind
him uncover those miles he has left to go. The life philosophy of alkovis characters will
indisputably attract readers and so will authors indisputable literary scope.

Svjetlana Gjoni: ZERO NEMO
Svjetlana Gjoni was born in Zagreb in 1950. She got a de-
gree in philosophy and the Russian language and literature
at the Faculty of Arts in Zagreb. Zero Nemo is her first novel
which she wrote, according to her own confession, only
because she is constantly interrupted while she speaks.

Zero Nemo short synopsis


Vienna in 2003. A mysterious woman in a flooded basement ate-
lier, a corpse of a young man and a manuscript with a strange
name. That is the initial situation of this large epic story which
offers us, by using realistic conventions of a found manuscript,
a shaky crime plot as well as a sequence of apparently discon-
nected stories about everything and anything. In time, little
pieces start slowly to fall back together in an intriguing pattern.
The author has told us an interesting story about three women
and their lives using two narrating voices. Encompassing a large
time period, this is a novel about life and growing up in Zagreb
in the fifties, about the intriguing eighties and the cultural codes
of an already mythical era of our social life, and about the tran-
sitional nineties in the artistic circles of Zagreb and Vienna. In
the geographical sense that half of a century long story takes
place in a vast European area starting from a concentration
camp in Germany in the Second World War, the post-war USSR,
to Zagreb and Vienna. The area of the East and the South East
Europe which had been seriously contaminated by history, is the 15,523,5, 260 p.
stage for these life stories which the author spreads in front of us
slowly, as if she was knitting a wool jumper, offering us an abundance of interesting stories
of a past world which the transition turned suddenly into a distant past bringing it closer to
the dream than remembrance.

Digressive, just like consciousness of a woman confronted with another fatal immer-
sion, so the story-telling is turning into an attempt to reshape her own destiny. This
novel is a erce confrontation with life made up of snags: books, pictures, installa-
tions, objects and characters which have, at rst glance and without any order, been
brought by the dirty water of a ood and then put together in an interesting mosaic.
