Alexander Solzhenitsyn was the winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature. He wrote of his eight
years imprisonment in one of Joseph Stalins labour camps, or Gulags, in Russia, in the 1940s and
50s. He said I learnt one great lesson for my years in prison camps. I love to have a person
becomes evil and how he becomes good. Gradually I came to realise that the line that separates good
from evil passes not between states, or between classes, or between political parties, but right through
every human heart. Even hearts that are overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is
retained. And in the best of all hearts, there remains an on uprooted small corner of evil ". (The
Gulag Archipelago)
In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus says the virtuous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their
Father. Human destiny is to shine like the sun. We are made for love, joy and peace, etc. (Galatians
5:22). However, we dont always feel like were shining like the sun. We experience, like the English
weather, times of sun, cloud, rain, and even thunder. We are happy with some aspects of life, but
maybe unhappy with a particular relationship, work, studies, finances, or injustices. Some of these
things are due to other people, but sometimes the evil that prevents us from shining like the sun
exists in our heart.
The Good News that Jesus reveals is that God is patient. The book of Wisdom says, after sin you
[God] will grant repentance (Wisdom 12:19). The responsorial psalm says, O Lord, you are good
and forgiving (Psalm 85:5). The second reading from St. Pauls letter to the Romans says, the Spirit
comes to help us in our weakness (Romans 8:26). Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven grows
while allowing evil to exist in our hearts. Why? So we can grow in virtue, choose to love, and do
good, just as Jesus did in the face of temptations.
I think the church can sometimes fall into two camps: on one hand a community who recognises evil
and sin in their hearts, but who deal with it by shutting off their emotions, becoming cold,
judgemental, and unwelcoming. On the other hand some communities may not recognise sinful
desires, and become inclusive, welcoming, and invitational, but into something that is more like a
non-Christian social club.
I think Jesus wants his people to recognise their constant need for his forgiveness and mercy. A
people who shine like the sun, not because of anything they themselves have done, but because
they have experienced his mercy and love in the face of their sinfulness. This is faith! A church
whose joy is always being prepared to welcome, invite, and include other sinners freely into his
mercy and love. Which Church do you want to be?

SYRIAN REFUGEES
The Haringey parishes are exploring the possibility of housing a Syrian refugee family with
the support of the governments Community Sponsorship scheme. One essential
requirement is to find a house or flat for a family. If you might be able to help with this,
please contact Father David Ardagh-Walter on 0208 800 8374. We shall need a number of
other helpers, but accommodation is key to this project.
