Lesson Idea Name: Planning a Trip to Brussels


Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): fourth
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE4.MD.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving
distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving
simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in
terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that
feature a measurement scale.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3. Knowledge Constructor Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others. Students: a. plan and employ effective research strategies to locate
information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits. b. evaluate the accuracy,
perspective, credibility and relevance of information, media, data or other resources. c. curate information
from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate
meaningful connections or conclusions. d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and
problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

Lesson idea implementation:

I do: I will present the ideas in class using narrated PowerPoint. EBD students will watch from their classroom.
ESOL and IEP students will review the materials using headphones, and will review it more than once. It will
be available on my classroom blog. (10 minutes)

We Do: I will initiate a discussion about other itinerary options, and gradually face responsibility as groups
research, discuss, and compile documentation. ESOL, IEP, and EBD students will participate fully using shared
document. Differentiation tools available will be calculators, speech to text software, and strategize grouping
of students with consideration of emotional resources, IEP needs, and language challenges. Assessment will
be monitoring informally during class, and formally with review of the document.

Conclusion will be on a following day with a discussion of the documents compiled. Feedback will be informal;
during this time, and formal with individual copies of the document. Students will make changes on their
individual excel spreadsheets with written comments of consideration given after the discussion. This will
require a higher order thinking as students revise to synthesize their trip, their thoughts, and the final
document.
