CHOOSING IDEAL LEADER ACCORDING TO HINDU
PERSPECTIVE

Om Avignam'stu Namah Siddham

Om Svasti Astu

The honorable of Judjes,

Dear my friends how participates in this speech contest, and all audience.

First of all, I would like to thank to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, who has given us Mercy

and Blessing, so we can attend here in a good condition. And great fully thank especially to

catur guru which have been the science and educate us to became what we are today.

Before I begin to give a speech, I would like to introduce myself. My name is I will

give a speech (dharma wacana) this occasion is about choosing ideal leader according to

Hindu perspective.

Ladies and gentlemen

Leadership is a process of influence or an example by the leader to the followers in an effort

to achieve organizational goals.

Hindu scriptures describe in detail the qualities, or, to be more specific, the abilities, capacity

and suitability of a person to attain the position of leader. Hindu philosophy emphasizes

selflessness, ability to govern, commitment to dharma, perseverance, and fair-mindedness as

paramount, in addition to the above. The commitment to dharma, which means proper

conduct, and unwavering morality are cornerstones of a leader. Integrity and sincerity the

most essential ingredients for a good leader, are hard to find in the face of current definition

of success which is success at any cost.

Does this mean that a leader has to be perfect? Hindu philosophy does not demand that

factors that contribute to imperfection are also described in Hindu scriptures. Some are

internal such as shortcomings due to intellectual (buddhi) deficiencies, or strong biases

natural or cultivated. Others are external such as undue and/or improper influence from

persons around the leader.

Ladies and gentlemen

One of the biggest internal imperfections is a strong ego. Ego that leads to obliviousness to

facts, lack of objectivity, deviation from fair-mindedness, and misuse of power. Leaders need

to make every attempt to shed the shackles of ego.

Most people still tend to say that the effective leaders of properties or have certain traits that

are very important. for example , the charisma , the foresight , the power of persuasion , and

intensity . And indeed , when we think about the heroic leaders like Napoleon , Washington ,

Lincoln , Gandhi , Sukarno , and so we must recognize that such traits rub off on them and

have them use to achieve their desired goals.

The other aspect of cultivating leadership that Hinduism addresses is the importance of

proper and extensive tutelage in grooming a leader. Hindu scriptures describe the process in

detail, especially as it applies to the offspring of royal families.

Ladies and gentlemen

The prototype of a good leader is to be found in the ideals of kshatra being selfless, well

learned in subjects like statecraft, governance, war-science, justice, commitment to dharma,

ability to endure and face hardships, an attitude of being dispassionate and impersonal when

delivering justice and punishment.

This is a very high level view, and the several qualities required of a leader or ruler are found

across hundreds of primary texts, which can be primarily classed as under:

1. Ramayana, Mahabharata, Purana, Arthasastra, and Smrti-s: These elaborately

discuss Raja Dharma, and the main qualities required in a king such as Praja-

Ranjakatva and Siksha Sakshata.

2. Pancatantra, Vikramaditya-Betala and Bhoja-Sala Bhanjika: These texts

demonstrate through stories the subjects discussed above in a way that lay people of

these subjects can understand.

Ladies and gentlemen

Today, what we see in social movements and polity is negativity, groupism, rhetoric,

bargaining, and mortgaging social good for political and personal mileage.

Lately, we know there are so many problems that come from economic, social, cultural,

security and law enforcement in a very bad condition. As we have seen, deficits and inflation

are still plaguing the country. The case of Intolerance that emerged lately, for example in the

case of Mr. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. Increasingly endless corruption, for example E-KTP,

BLBI, of HAMBALANG, etc.

Ladies and gentlemen

Mpu Yogiswara with his book Kekawin Ramayana II, Sargah 24.81 & 82 deliberately insert

instructive teachings to treat the book manu (Hindu Law) in order to continue to be a guide in

fostering society and advancing humanity. The verse of the hymn is as follows:

Saka nikang rat kita yan wenang manut,

Manupadesa prihatah rumaksaya,

Ksaya nikang papa nahan prayojana,

Jana anuraga adhi tuwin kapangguha

Thats means:

You should follow the changing era.

Use Manu's teachings to save the world.

Eliminate suffering,

Thats you should to try, then you will get the love of the people.

Ladies and gentlemen

Asta Brata is a picture of the leadership of the gods in Hindu religion. All leaders / kings must

adore this Asta Brata. Because Asta Brata is the eight cornerstone of mental attitude for a

leader. The eight parts of Asta Brata is:

Indra Brata, the leadership is like God Indra or Rain God; Where the rain came from the

evaporating sea water. Meaning a leader from the people must return to serve the people.
Yama Brata, a leader who can uphold justice indiscriminately like Sang Hyang

Yamadipati who judges the Suratma.

Surya Brata, a leadership that is able to enlighten its citizens like the Sun who shines the

world.
Candra Brata, meaning the leader should have a gentle or soothing behavior like the

Candra that shines at night.

Bayu Brata, meaning leaders must know the mind or will of the people and provide

refreshment for the common people. As the nature of Sang Bayu that blows from the area

of high pressure to low.

Baruna Brata, meaning the leader must be able to combat the evil or problems in the

community that arise as Sang Hyang Baruna clean up any form of dirt in the sea.
Agni Brata, meaning the leader must be able to defeat the enemy who came and burned it

down like Sang Hyang Agni.

Kwera or Prthiwi Brata, meaning that a leader should always think about the welfare of

his people as the earth provides for the welfare of mankind and can save money as frugal

as the Hyang Kwera in arranging the prosperity in the heaven.

In Lontar Rajapati Gondala, there are also mentioned 10 kinds of people who can be friends

by the King. The ten kinds are people who:

1. Satya (honest)
2. Arya (great / noble person)
3. Dharma (good)
4. Asurya (can defeat the enemy)
5. Mantri (can serve well)
6. Salya Tawan (many friends)
7. Bali (strong and powerful)
8. Kaparamarthan (has a clear vision)
9. Kadiran (permanent establishment)

10. Guna (much of his knowledge)

Ladies and gentlemen

As a closing remark, I invite the younger generation of Hindus to take the noble values of the

Hindu leadership concepts. Implement the concepts of Hindu leadership in daily life so that

will be many leaders who come from the younger generation of Hindus.

That's just the Dharma message that I can convey, may be useful for the people of Dharma as

well. Im sorry If there is any unacceptable words, and I beg pardon to the Brahman.

And finally, Im going to close my speech now.
