En nuestro particular viaje al paraso, creado por cierto en
siete das, les invitamos a descubrir la Isla Mauricio, un pedazo de cielo en la
tierra situado a 900 km de Madagascar. Les presentamos tambin a Leticia
Coma, una joven espaola que ha empezado con muy buen pie su carrera en
el mundo de la moda. Y por supuesto, de pie nos quedamos para rendir tributo
al gran maestro de la nutica moderna, Carlo Riva, enamorado confeso de
Marbella.
Como no poda ser de otro modo, las joyas y relojes tambin han tenido
su cuota de protagonismo en la revista. La diseadora Luisa Rosas nos ha
demostrado que el empeo y la creatividad realzan el legado; algo que sin
duda dejar el artesano relojero Stephen Forsey cuando decida, simplemente,
matar el tiempo.
Y para acabar, solo una pregunta: han visitado alguna vez el Museo Patek

started her career in the fashion world on the right foot. And of course, well
remain standing to pay tribute to the great master of modern yachting, Carlo
Riva, a self-declared lover of Marbella.
As could not be otherwise, jewellery and watches also have their fair share
of limelight in the magazine. Designer Luisa Rosas shows us that drive and
creativity enhance legacy, something which will do doubt be left behind by
watchmaker Stephen Forsey when he decides to simply kill time.

ien lo sabe Marina Gmez, que nos acompaa en nuestra
primera visita a esta maison del tiempo. Ella, en cambio, repite:
Cada vez que lo visito descubro alguna pieza que me sorprende
bien por esttica, bien por su tcnica o por el personaje que lo
adquiri. Lo dice con conocimiento de causa.
El Museo divide toda la muestra en cuatro plantas y realiza
un extraordinario recorrido -rico, diverso y bien dispuesto- por la historia de
la relojera mecnica, desde sus inicios, en los albores del siglo XVI, hasta
nuestros das.
En la primera planta se recrea un antiguo taller de relojera, maquinaria
incluida, para mostrar cmo trabajaban los artesanos relojeros que llegaron a
la ciudad tras la reforma protestante instaurada por Calvino. El uso de nuevas
tecnologas ha mejorado los sistemas de produccin, pero no ha impedido
mantener los acabados artesanales, que se realizan con tcnicas que tienen
ms de 200 aos.
Belleza y tcnica: el reloj como objeto de culto
Desde aqu, continuamos la visita en sentido inverso, empezando por la ltima
planta. En ella guardan parte del archivo de Patek Philippe y una gran librera.
Posteriormente, bajamos a la tercera, donde nos aguarda la coleccin antigua
del museo, compuesta por relojes fabricados entre el siglo XVI y el siglo XIX.
Hay muchas piezas de esta parte que me encantan. Algn reloj con esmalte,
las piezas autmatasaunque especialmente me apasiona un reloj de mueca
con alas de mariposa en su esfera y brazalete.
Durante todo el siglo XVI y buena parte del XVII los relojes no ofrecan mucha
precisin, de hecho, solo contaban con la aguja de las horas. Por ello, los
artesanos decidieron realzar su valor esttico, convirtindolos en objeto
de deseo de las clases bienestantes. Su belleza es incontestable, as como
tambin su vigencia: Cada vez que voy al museo llevo mi bloc de diseo y
dibujo los detalles que me parecen interesantes, como el acabado de ciertas

The museum divides the collection over four floors and provides an
extraordinary journey (that is rich, diverse and well-organised) through the
history of mechanical watchmaking, from its beginnings in the early 16th
century to the present.
On the first floor, this is a reconstruction of an old watchmaking workshop,
machinery included, to show the activity of artisan watchmakers who came to
the city after the Protestant Reformation established by Calvin. The use of new
technologies has improved manufacturing systems, but it has not prevented us
from maintaining artisanal finishes, which are done using techniques that are
over 200 years old.
Beauty and technique: the timepiece as an object of worship
From here, we continue the tour in reverse order, staring from the last
floor. It holds part of the Patek Philippe archive as well as a large library. We
subsequently descend to the third floor, where we find the museums collection
of antiques, consisting of timepieces made between the 16th and 19th century.
There are a lot of pieces in this part that I love. A watch with enamel, the

Throughout the entire 16th century and much of the 17th century, watches
were not very accurate; in fact, they only had an hour hand. As a result,
craftsmen decided to enhance their aesthetic value, making them objects of

or supuesto, la gran dama es el diamante. Tanto en la Edad
Media como en Renacimiento consideraban que montada
sobre oro y puesto en el lado izquierdo, esta piedra preciosa
tena el poder de alejar los malos espritus y apaciguar las
bestias salvajes.
Marylyn Monroe, unos cuantos siglos despus, crea que los
diamantes eran los mejores amigos de las chicas es algo ms prosaico, pero
igualmente significativo. En todo caso, lo que es obvio es que los diamantes
nos siguen encantando y que su produccin a nivel mundial va viento en popa,
siendo Rusia el lder indiscutible en trminos de extraccin. Pero, qu es
exactamente lo que buscan los expertos gemlogos?
Obviamente, buscan los diamantes de la ms alta calidad, cuya valoracin
depende de las cuatro C: carat weight (quilates), clarity (pureza), colour (color)
y cut (corte). El quilate, equivalente a 0,20 gramos, es la medida que se aplica
al peso de un diamante. Podra pensarse entonces que dos piezas del mismo
tamao tienen el mismo valor, pero nada ms alejado de la realidad.
Tan o ms importante que esto es la claridad o, dicho de otro modo, la pureza.
Todos los diamantes tienen lo que comnmente se conoce como defectos,
diminutas trazas de carbono no cristalizado nicamente detectables bajo la
lente de un microscopio 10x. Est claro: a menos trazas, ms puro, inusual y
valioso ser el diamante (el grado de pureza se determina de acuerdo a una
escala establecida por el GIA).
En tercer lugar, tenemos el color. Es un aspecto tambin muy importante,
porque de hecho los diamantes no tienen por qu ser incoloros. Los hay de
todos los tonos, incluso los ms llamativos y fantasiosos, aunque los ms
codiciados siguen siendo los que ofrecen una mayor transparencia, que son los
que tienen menos imperfecciones.
Precisamente, el color aparece por una malformacin en la estructura atmica
de la propia piedra, compuesta por tomos de carbono. Cuando en ella se
interpone el boro, por ejemplo, el diamante se torna azul; mientras que el
nitrgeno es el responsable del amarillo y el hidrgeno causante del prpura.
Por ltimo, a la hora de valorar la calidad de un diamante tambin se debe
tener en cuenta su corte. Nos referimos a su apariencia y a la disposicin de
sus caras, algo que tendr una incidencia directa en su interaccin con la luz.
En un diamante perfectamente cortado, la luz penetrar en su ncleo desde
cualquier ngulo y generar un reflejo hacia la parte superior, creando un
bonito y valorado arco iris.
Respecto a la forma, hay muchas diferencias, siendo el corte brillante -con
unas 57 caras- el ms frecuente. Sin embargo, hay muchos otros, como el
esmeralda, el radiante, el princesa, el baguette, el marquise, el pera, el valo e
incluso el corte corazn.

A few centuries later, Marylyn Monroe thought that diamonds
were a girls best friend, which is a bit more prosaic but
equally significant. In any case, whats clear is that diamonds continue to
enchant us and that their production worldwide is going strong, with Russia
as the undisputed leader in terms of extraction. But, what exactly are expert
gemmologists looking for?
Well, they are obviously looking for diamonds of the highest quality, the value
of which depends on the four Cs: carat, clarity, colour and cut. A carat, which is
equal to 0.20 grams, is the measurement used for diamond weight. One could
think that two stones of the same size have the same value, but nothing could
be further from the truth.
Just as or more important is the clarity or, in other words, the purity. All
diamonds have what is commonly referred to as defects, i.e., tiny traces
of uncrystallised carbon that can only be detected under the lens of a 10x
microscope. This means that the fewer traces there are, the purer, more
unusual and more valuable the diamond will be (the level of clarity is graded
based on the GIA scale).
Third comes colour. This is also a very important aspect, because, in fact,
diamonds do not necessarily need to be colourless. There are all sorts of
shades, including the most striking and fanciful, although the most coveted
stones continue to be those that are the most transparent, those which have
the fewest imperfections.
Indeed, colour is actually a malformation in the atomic structure of the stone,
which is made up of carbon atoms. When boron is present, for example, the
diamond becomes blue; while nitrogen causes yellow colouring, and hydrogen
results in purple colouring.
Lastly, when assessing the quality of a diamond, the cut also comes into play.
Cut refers to how it looks and the layout of the facets, an aspect that directly
affects how the stone interacts with light. In a flawlessly cut diamond, light
penetrates the core from every angle and generates outward reflections,
creating a beautiful and highly sought after rainbow.
As for shape, there are many differences, with brilliant-cut (with 57 facets) as
the most common. However, there are many other cuts, including emerald-cut,
radiant-cut, princess-cut, baguette-cut, marquis-cut, pear-shaped, oval-cut and
even heart-shaped.

uisa Rosas representa la quinta generacin de una
saga de joyeros portuguesa, cuya actividad empez
en 1860. Ella estudi arquitectura y cuando colabor
en el proceso de reforma de alguna de las tiendas de
la compaa ya no hubo marcha atrs. El diseo, la
belleza, la familia y las joyas cuestin de orgullo.
Las cuatro generaciones que nos han precedido han hecho crecer algo muy
especial. Para m no es un trabajo, es algo de corazn y forma parte de quienes
somos y cmo crecemos.
La apertura de la primera tienda de David Rosas en Porto sent un
precedente impactante en el sector del lujo.
Eso ocurri en 1984, entonces no haba una oferta de alta joyera. Mi padre
pensaba que de haberla el mercado portugus reaccionara de forma positiva e
intent convencer a algunos empresarios para que invirtieran en el segmento,
pero nadie tuvo fe.

Sin duda, mi padre ha estado a mi lado mientras lanzaba mi primera coleccin.

Qu caractersticas tienen?
Estn realizadas de forma artesanal y se inspiran en la naturaleza, aunque
combinan estructuras, patrones y movimiento, temas muy presentes en
la arquitectura. Me gusta pensar que son piezas de autor, que la gente las
reconoce como mas.
Durante aos, el sector del lujo fue creciendo hasta alcanzar un ritmo
de hasta un 10% anual. Ahora, sin embargo, la cota se sita entre el
2% y 5%. Cmo han encajado ustedes este descenso?
El sector ha crecido mucho y durante mucho tiempo, sobre todo en los
mercados emergentes. Era previsible que se estabilizara.
Habr algn otro elemento diferencial.
Bueno, seguramente el concepto del lujo est cambiando; ahora la gente
quiere cosas distintas con las que se pueda identificar. Para nosotros ha sido
ventajoso, en Portugal nuestras ventas se han incrementado un 50% con
relacin al ao anterior.
Qu le atrajo de Espaa, Marbella y Gomez & Molina?
Con la familia Gomez y Molina compartimos valores: llevan su empresa con
cabeza y pasin, algo fundamental para tener xito. Adems, son un referente
en Marbella, una ubicacin estratgica a nivel internacional.

important saga of Portuguese jewellers whose activity
began in 1860. She studied architecture, and when she
worked on the refurbishment of one of the companys
shops, there was no turning back. The design, the
beauty, the family and the jewellerya matter of pride.
The four generations that have preceded us have made something very special
grow. For me, its not a job; its something from the heart and is part of who we
are and how we grow up.
The opening of the rst David Rosas shop in Porto set an impressive
precedent in the luxury industry. What happened?
This occurred in 1984; at the time, there was no fine jewellery available. My
father thought that if there were, the Portuguese market would react positively,
and he tried to convince some businessmen to invest in the sector, but nobody
had faith.
He did.
Totally! In fact, months after the opening of his first shop, he signed an exclusive
representation agreement with Patek Philippe for the entire country. The publics
acceptance was incredible.
Now its you who has your own shops.
It all started 10 years ago, when my brother encouraged me
to create something. At first I didnt feel comfortable, so I
decided to study a postgraduate degree in jewellery design
to learn more, and I saw that it had certain similarities with
the world of architecture, from which I came.
And you felt like a duck takes to water.
Exactly! I created my first collection, which was released
as a sub-brand of David Rosas. It was much more successful than I could have
imagined. Then other collections emerged, and in the end I decided to create an
independent brand and internationalise it.
Surely youve been well accompanied.
Certainly. My fathers been by my side while I launched my first collection. He
experienced it in a very intense way and has been the first fan of my jewellery.
What is your jewellery like?
It is handcrafted and inspired by nature, although it combines structures, models
and movements, which are widely present themes in architecture. I like to think
that they are signature pieces, that people recognise them as mine.
For years, the luxury industry was growing at a rate of up to 10% per
year. Now, however, the rate is between 2% and 5%. How have you
handled this decline?
The industry grew a lot and for a long time, especially in emerging markets. It
was foreseeable that it would level off.
Perhaps there will be another distinguishing element.
Well, the concept of luxury is surely changing. Now people want different things
with which they can identify. For us its been advantageous. In Portugal, our sales
have grown by 50% with respect to the previous year.
What attracted you to Spain, Marbella and Gomez & Molina?
With the Gomez y Molina family, we share values: they run their company
intelligently and with passion, which is fundamental to be successful. Moreover,
they are a point of reference in Marbella, a strategic location at an international
level.

Edicin), que se celebra en Egipto y contar con
representantes de 60 pases distintos. La entrevistamos

How does the stabilisation of the market affect a company that
makes just over 100 watches a year?
Thanks to our creativity we get strong consistent interest from the collectors
community and our collectors are still very passionate which means that we
are maintaining our long term strategy.
The Art of Invention, as you call it.
We starting from a blank sheet of paper to redefine the specification of each
reference. The QP Equation is a perfect example.
Why?
Because it redefines the perpetual calendar mechanical wristwatch. At the
heart of this project is notably our 7th invention, a unique mechanical computer
which is completely integrated into the movement. The whole invention and
development process took 8 years.
The tourbillon is something that also fascinates you.
Watchmakers have always sought to improve the precision of mechanical
timekeepers, and Its also a showcase for who designs it.
What have you added to it to generate such admiration?
The traditional single-axis Tourbillon was originally invented for a pocket watch
and despite miniaturization for the wristwatch we had observed that the
performance was not always improved.

A compact and efcient watch
The Monobloc Actuator is the largest watch ever
made by Porsche Design, so far. Its powerful
monobloc case, made out of brushed or black
PVC coated titanium, is 45.50 mm in diameter
and 15.60 mm thick. It does not have a bezel
per se, but rather gives way directly to the inner
ring containing the 24-hour scale, just above the
sapphire crystal. Nor does it have conventional
lugs; instead, the strap or bracelet is attached to
the surfaces that angle out from the back.
Meanwhile, the dial exhibits a more traditional
look, in line with the identifying traits of Porsche
chronographs. It comes in three different
versions: black or blue with a sunburst finish
or matte black. In all versions, the dial has a
tachymeter scale, a 12-hour counter at 6 oclock
and a 30-minute counter at 12 oclock.
In addition to these counters, the watch features
a date window at 4 oclock as well as a window
at 9 oclock used to show that the watch is
running.
If all this werent enough, from the central axis
(shared between the time information and the
central seconds hand) arises the arrow-tipped
hand used to indicate the second time zone.
Driving all these functions is the Valjoux calibre
7754, a self-winding chronograph movement
that oscillates at 28,000 vibrations per hour and
builds up a 48-hour power reserve.
