III-YEAR AUTOMOBILE ENGIN EERING AT

6501 AUTOMOTIVE TRANSMISSION UNIT-1
CLUTCH AND GEAR BOX
2Marks Questions

1. What are the important requirements of an automotive transmission system?

It disconnects engine from driving wheels when required
The engine is connected to driving wheels when required
It changes ratio of torque output to torque input, as desired
It turns the drive through a right angle
2. How clutches are classified?.

3. State the function of clutch.

Clutch is used to disengage and engage the
engine with rest of the transmission systems.
To disengage while starting the engine and
while changing gear ratio.
To engage after starting of the engine and gear
shift operation.
4. State the requirements of clutch.
Transmit maximum torque of the engine
Engage gradually to avoid sudden jerks
Dissipate maximum amount of heat.
Damp the vibrations and noise.
Dynamically balanced.
As small as possible.
Easy to operate.
5. What is meant by double deducting?
Double clutching is when the clutch pedal is depressed while shifting to neutral to match engine speed to the intended
gear and vehicle speed, and again depressed for shifting into gear. Sometimes, truck drivers use the engine brake to help
match the engine speed to the gear.
6. With sketch illustrate the principle of friction clutch.

To understand the working principle of clutch, lets take two sanding discs, first one driven by a
power drill corresponds to the flywheel of a car, driven by the engine.
If a second sanding disc is brought into contact with the first, friction makes it revolve too but more
slowly.
But when the second disc pressed against the first disc which is connected to the power drill, as
the pressure increases the two discs revolve as one. This is how a friction clutch works.
7. Define diaphragm spring type single plate clutch
Diaphragm spring replaces release levers and coil springs
Automobile V Semester Question Automotive
Engg o Bank
Diaphragm pivots off pivot rings when clutch pedal is depressedTransmission
Advantages
o Requires less effort and takes up less space
o Spring pressure becomes greater as disc wears
o Well balanced
8. Compare the single plate coil spring clutch and diaphragm clutch.
diaphragm clutch more compact means of storing energy compared to coil spring clutch
Less affected by the centrifugal forces, it can withstand higher rotational speeds whereas coil springs distort
transversely at higher speeds
Diaphragm acts as both clamping spring and release lever
9. Enumerate the factors which influence the torque capacity of a clutch.
The torque capacity of a friction clutch increases with the increase of the coefficient of friction of the rubbing materials,
the diameter and/or the spring thrust sandwiching the driven plate. The friction lining materials limit the coefficient of
friction to the order of 0.35. Materials with higher coefficient of friction values are available, but these tend to be unstable
and to snatch during take-up. Increasing the diameter of the driven -plate raises its inertia, and its tendency to continue
spinning when the driven-plate is freed during disengaged position of the clutch. Also there is a limit to the clamping
pressure to which the friction lining material may be subjected if it is to maintain its friction properties over a long period
of time.
10. What is meant by drag torque and how it can be reduced?.
The torque trans 1nitted when the engine is in idling condition is knovvn as drag torque. Even when %slip is 100% there is a
drag on GB shafts, which renders gear changing with ordinar y type of gearbox very difficult and vehicle will tend to involve
when it is park ed .

11. What is function of a gear box?

Torque ratio between the engine and wheels to be varied for rapid acceleration and for climbing gradients.
It provides means of reversal of vehicle motion.
Transmission can be disconnected from engine by neutral position of gear box.
12. What is the principle of synchromesh gear box?
It is device used to bring two adjacent members tothe same speed before allowing the sleeve to
engage them.
13. What are the advantages of the synchronism mechanism?
Avoids double de clutching
Gear engaged smoothly compared to constant mesh.
14. Define tractive effort.
The force available at the contact between rear wheel tyres and road is known as tractive effort.
The ability of the rear wheels to transmit this effort without slipping is known as traction.

1. What are the advantages of the fluid coupling?

It provides acceleration pedal control to effect automatic disengagement of drive to
gearbox at a predetermined speed.
Vibrations from engine side are not transmitted to wheels and similarly shock loads from transmission side will
not be transmitted to engine.
No wear on moving parts and no adjustments to be made.
No jerk on transmission when gear engages. It damps all shocks and
strains incident with connecting a revolving engine to transmission.
Vehicle can be stopped in gear and move off by pressing acceleration only.
There is no direct firm connection between engines and wheels. So when engine is overloaded, it will not stop. But it
results in slip within coupling.
Unlike friction clutch, slip within coupling does not cause damage within working components.
2. Define torque capacity?
The torque capacity of the clutch is the amount of torque that can be transmitted by the clutch when its
slipping or when its fully closed. The torque capacity of a clutch depends on a series of factors:
total area of the friction surface
friction coefficient
normal force acting on the clutch
number of friction elements
3. State principle of torque conversion?
Transfer torque between two driveline axes as function of their relative angular velocity.
*A torque converter couples two driveline axes, transferring torque and angular motion by the hydrodynamic action of a
viscous fluid.
4. State a few advantages of poly phase torque converters?
The objective of the polyphase converter is to extend the high efficiency speed range of the
simple three element converter by altering the vane or blade shapes of the one element.
5. Differentiate clearly between a torque converter and a fluid coupling?APR/MAY 2005.
Fluid coupling acts as an automatic clutch without torque multiplication.
Torque converter is essentially an automatic clutch & torque
multiplying device.
Fluid coupling has two principal components impeller & runner.
Torque converter has three components Impeller, runner,
reactor (or) stator.
The vanes of fluid coupling are straight & radial shaped.
The vanes of torque converter are curved shape.
Torque converter can be converted in to fluid coupling while transmitting torque ratio of 1:1.
6. Define slip in a fluid coupling.
Slip is the ratio of the different of speeds of rotation of the impeller & runner ., to the speed
of rotation of impeller and expressed in percentage. Speed of runner always lags behind that of impeller
Percentage slip = (N-n/N)*100 where runner speed n=0, slip = 100% Torque is not transmitted When N = n, slip
= 0 , Torque is fully transmitted
7. What is function of the reaction member in the torque converter?
In reaction member the spinning motion is reversed and the fluid leaves that
member with a positive moment of momentum nearly equal to the negative moment of momentum with
which it entered.
8. What do you mean by coupling point in two phase torque converter?
The torque converters operating modes (during forward operation) can be explained by using the coupling point,
which is defined based on the stators torque. In the torque multiplication range, below the coupling point, the stator is
fixed by the one-way clutch and its rotational speed is zero. In the coupling range, which happens after the coupling point,
the stator freely rotates and the stators torque is zero.
9. Draw the polar diagram illustrating the principle of hydro dynamic torque conversion.

Engg Bank Transmission

10.What are the various means used to reduce drag torque in fluid coupling.
To reduce the drag torque, following methods are used,
l) Using anti drag torque baffle
2) Using fluid reservoir_
3) Using combination of both
4) Fluid coupling is used on combination with epicyclic gear box
5) Fluid coupling with con_ven.tion.al synchromesh gearbox

11.What are the limitations of fluid coupling?

Even when the engine is idling, runner shaft rotates i.e., some torque is transmitted during the engine is in idling
condition. Due to this the gear shifting is so1ne what difficult and the vehicle will tend to move when it is parked in gear.

12.What is the function of a torque converter?

The torque converter connects and transfers power from the engines crankshaft to the
transmission input shaft. It can act as a clutch to stop this power flow when the vehicle stops. The converter can also multiply
torque to improve vehicle performance.
13. What are the limitations of
hydrodynamic torque converter?
Separate gear drive is necessary for reversing in torque converter.
Torque converter efficiency is maximum for a part of its speed range.
14.Discuss the performance characteristics of fluid coupling?

14. What is the need of stator in a torque converter.

The stator is located between the impeller and the turbine. It sis mounded on the stator
reaction shaft which is fixed to the transmission case The vanes of the stator catch the fluid as it leaves the turbine runner and
redirects it so that it strikes the back of the vanes of the impeller, giving added boost or torque. The benefit of this added torque
can be as great as 30% to 50%. The one- way clutch
mounded to the stator allows it to rotate in the same direction as the crankshaft. However if the
stator attempts to rotate in the opposite direction, the one-way clutch locks the stator to prevent it
from rotating. Therefore the stator is rotated or locked depending on the direction from which the fluid strikes against the
vanes.
