Course Title Lesson Title Format Duration Class Size
Online Module 20 mins 80 (40 in Interdisciplinary Medical The Scientific Method Tutorial 50 mins each Sciences Laboratory Laboratory 3 hours section) Learning Outcomes By the end of this lesson, students will be able to List the characteristics of scientific research Describe the scientific method and discuss the importance of each step Compare and contrast different research paper formats Design an appropriate experiment based on the principles of the scientific method Review Where the learner is (3 mins) Content Materials Needed Students must complete an online module prior to attending the Study Guide and tutorial and laboratory sessions. At the start of this module, students Online Module are asked to reflect on the definition of research and why it is so (Articulate Storyline) important. Students will then learn about the types of research (basic and applied) and the classifications (quantitative vs qualitative) of research. Overview Where the learner is going (2 mins) Content Materials Needed The scientific method will be covered in two parts in this course. Part LMS landing page, I will focus on designing your experiment and Part II will discuss Study Guide, and communicating your results. We will work together to design a Online Module hypothetical experiment to solidify the concepts covered. (Articulate Storyline) Presentation How the learner will get there (20 mins) Content Materials Needed - Define types and characteristics of research Study Guide and - Discuss the scientific method Online Module - Provide scenario to explain experimental design steps (Articulate Storyline) Exercise How to make sure the learner gets there (5 mins) Activity Materials Needed - Embed quiz questions throughout module Online Module - Formative assessment with immediate feedback (Articulate Storyline) Summary Checking to see if the learner got there (1.5 hrs) Activity Materials Needed - Have students work in small groups to discuss how the Whiteboard or following terms relate to one another and how they differ: Chalkboard in tutorial primary, article, peer-reviewed, secondary, and and laboratory review sessions - Have students identify hypothetical research question and work together as a class to write out the experimental design steps
Note: The following is a lesson plan for a flipped classroom environment. Students familiarize themselves with content using online learning modules and come to tutorial and laboratories to engage in discussion.
