THE SEVENTEENTH HR ROUND TABLE AT NEW DELHI

Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) organized its seventeenth HR Round Table
on 7 August, 2015at WelcomHotel Sheraton, New Delhi, in association with National HRD Network,
Deloitte and Bloomberg TV. BIMTECH has been organizing such Round Tables since 2011 and this HR
Round Table in Delhi is the first Round Table the Financial Year 2015-16.

The Theme of the Round Table was Leading the New Way for HR with the sub-theme Culture &
Engagement.

The Theme of this HR Roundtable is aptly chosen when the world of 21st Century demands bold and
innovative thinking in Human Resources(HR) in organizations. It challenges our existing people practices:
how we evaluate and manage people and how we engage and develop teams; how we select leaders
and how they operate. HR organizations now face increasing demands to measure and monitor the larger
organizational culture, simplify the work environment, and redesign work to help people adapt. For HR
and talent teams, 2015 will be a critical year. As these forces gather momentum, we see 2015 as a time
for creativity, bold leadership, and a fundamental reimagining of the practices HR leaders have been
using for years.

Todays organizations operate in the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) environment. In
the era of social media, every corporate decision is immediately publicly exposed and debated. Once-
private issues are now posted online for every employee and every potential employee to read. An
organizations culturewhich can be loosely defined as the way things work around here is increasingly
visible for the world to see. Given the harsh spotlight of this new transparency, an organizations culture
can become a key competitive advantage or its Achilles heel. Culture and engagement are now
business issues, not just topics for HR to debate. And theres no place for organizations to hide.

The HR Round Table was held from 6 PM to 8.30 PM on 7th September 2015. The programme
commenced with Welcome Address by Dr. H. Chaturvedi, Director BIMTECH, Greater Noida, setting the
tone for the discussion. We must create an environment where employees can choose to be
engaged, he said. Dr. Vishalli Dongrie, Senior Director, Human Capital Consulting, Deloitte, presented
the findings of Deloittes Global Human Capital Trends Survey, conducted in 2015. As per this study, top
three Global Human Capital trends emerged are:

Culture & Engagement

Leadership
Learning & Development

Based on Importance and urgency Leadership comes on top among other top three trends in case of
India. We cannot define leadership only at the first two or three levels. It has to start from the entry level
of the organization because one research shows that India is the youngest in the world followed by Brazil.
India is taking up position in the leadership pipeline much faster than the countries like China or Brazil. So
the complexity of the role has increased and therefore the Culture & Engagement and Leadership
become much more important for India than many other countries in the world. In India organizations are
investing a little more than what the organizations in other parts of the globe are investing. So our
investment has gone higher as compared to the global investments in HR. If we compare the Human
Capital trends of Global, Asia and India we find Indias trends are very similar to Global trends and not so
very similar to the trends of Asia.

The top challenges corporate are facing can be categorized as long term and short term. The long term
challenges include Leadership, Learning & Development, HR & People Policy, and Culture &
Engagement, whereas Performance Management System comes in short term category.

There was a panel discussion session on the sub-theme-Culture and Engagement for over an hour. Dr.
Vishalli Dongrie also moderated the Panel discussion very deftly, weaving the panelists through a maze
of questions.

The panel consisted of Ms. Anuranjita Kumar, Chief Human Resources Officer, Citi South Asia, Mr.
Biswajit Roy, Director (HR & Business Development), Oil India Ltd., Dr. J. K. Mitra, Professor (OB &
Strategic Management), Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi, Mr. Umesh Dhal, Director
HR & MS, LG Electronics India and Mr. V Krishnan, Executive Director-HR, Dabur India Ltd. who shared
their thoughts and interesting experiences from their own companies. Some of the important thoughts and
observations of the panelists can be quoted here.

Ms. Anuranjita Kumar said Culture is a set of practices or behavioral forces which we get used to
and it becomes an overarching culture.

On the question of whether Culture feeds to the balance sheet of an organization, Mr. Biswajit
Roy said Culture does make impacts in terms of financials of an organization; though there could
be other factors as well.

Dr. J K Mitra said Engagement is a part of the culturing element of an organization.

Mr. Umesh Dhal said When the culture actually starts in the organization you start seeing the
things moving in the right direction and you get the right results.

Mr. V Krishnan said Cultural context is very deeply ingrained in the DNA of the organization.

During the Question & Answer session, participants posed many interesting questions making the
discussion lively and enlightening.
