According to Perrys Chemical Engineers Handbook, 8th Edition, most drum filters
operate at a rotation speed in the range of 0.1 to 10 rev/min. Also, based on the brochure
GL&V Dorr-oliver Rotary Drum Filter, 35% of its circumference submerged in the
solution.

Since the required filtering area is 116.53 m2, the suitable design layout is found in the brochure
entitled GL&V Dorr-oliver Rotary Drum Filter which has a length of 30 ft, a diameter of 13.5
ft, and filtering area 1272 ft2 or 118.1727 m2

150hp will be used.
Materials of Construction
Drum and Vat/Trough
Stainless steel will be used for the materials of construction. Among four types of
stainless steel, austenitic stainless steel is the most corrosion-resistant steel. So that the Standard
Wrought Austenitic Stainless Steel AISI type 316 is used in this rotary drum filter.

The Filtrate contains acid, organic and water therefore, Polypropylene will be used as the
material for filter medium in rotary drum filter.
