Experiment 2: Parking Analysis Survey

1. Introduction:

Parking study is a method to determine the current demand for parking in

particular area by analysing existing parking capacity and demand. It determines the
sufficiency of parking in the study area as well as the safety without disrupting the traffic,
since parking is one of the major reason that causing traffic jam or poor transportation
performance system especially in the urban area. Thus, the capacity or parking area has to
be improved to overcome the parking demand problem.

This experiment is conducted for the purpose of determining if the parking in the
study area will exceed the total availability of parking provided. The data obtained can be
used to analyse the efficiency of parking area provided in the study area and forecast the
future parking supply if it is required as demand is higher than supply.

Accumulation counts are carried out in order to obtain the data on the number of
vehicles parked in a study area during a specific period of time. The number of vehicles
which are already in that area are counted or estimated. Peaking characteristics can be
determined by plotting the graph of the accumulation data by time. The accumulation
graph usually includes the cumulative arrival and cumulative departure graphs as well.

2. Objectives:
1. To determine frequency and the occupancy of the parking bay and the
accumulation.

3.2 Time and location:
The experiment conducted from 3:00p.m to 4:00p.m. The location is beside at the Block
9 (Faculty of Engineering and Technology Infrastructure) of the IUKL.
3.3 Procedure:
1. The time and location to conduct the survey is determined.
2. The area of survey is sketched and parking lots number has written down.
3. The area is divided into five zones and each member is assigned for one zone.
4. The parking lot number and plate number of the cars is recorded in the survey form.
5. The plate numbers of cars parked illegally is recorded and parking lot number is written
as illegal.
6. Survey is repeated every 15 minutes for a total of one hour.
7. The data collected is analyzed.

4.1 Analysis and discussion:

The study area of the experiment consist of 40 parking lots included 21 parking
lots of motorcycle, 10 staffs parking lot and 9 public legal parking lots. The experiment
start at 3:00p.m and 4:00 p.m. at the afternoon after the rain. The accumulation of the
vehicles is not much different at every interval duration of experiment. So less of the
student ride motorcycle they decide to drive the car to university and motorcycle parking
lots with none of vehicle. As the staff parking and public legal parking area with full of
vehicle. High percentage of parking lots is parked with one vehicle as at that day the
student are having their class. The staff parking is near to the classroom compare to the
public legal parking lots so that many students like to illegal parked their vehicle at the
staff parking lots to avoid walking a long distance. The accumulation of the vehicles is
decreasing of the experiment.

5. Conclusion:
As the conclusion, sufficiency parking lots is provided by conducting parking
survey analysis. There are some improvement need to be provided as to decrease the
number of illegal parking problem. Most of the time, the vehicles parked for a long
period of time which the turnover rate for parking lots are low. The accumulation of the
vehicles are decreasing the students have finish their class. Hopefully the student can
park their vehicles on the public legal parking lots to give convenient to the staffs.
