In 1984 the Associated Cement Company
(ACC) of India commissioned two types of
housing to be incorporated into an existing
company township. The units designed are
serung along the periphery of testes, rather
Tike a necklace. In both instanees there is a
progression from the exterior tothe interior
of the ste; from the public and vehicular
access domain, tothe private internal space of
the house itself, to a semi-private patio or
‘our, t0 the large central communal space.
‘The fist type of units — Type B—consist
‘of 368 flats, each with an area of 48 square
‘metres. These three structures are arranged i
4 highly formal manner to form a series of
imerconnected units, courtyards and gar
‘dens. The units decrease on the upper levels
to form terraces overlooking the central
space.
‘The second type — the larger Type] units
— sre approximately 65 square metres each
“These consist of 45. courtyard houses,
ventilated by intemal patios, arranged in
tightly-knit clusters. Each ewo-storey unit
hasa barsat (literally; rainy season) room on
the upper terrce level
