Abstract Art

(AKA Abstract Expressionism)

It is just lines, shapes, and colors. The Abstract art movement is called
Abstract Expressionism because, although the art has no subject, it is still
trying to convey some kind of emotion. The main characteristic of abstract
art is that it has no recognizable subject. Some Abstract Artists had theories
on the emotions that were caused by certain colors and shapes. They
planned out their seemingly random paintings to the last detail. Other artists
painted with emotion and randomness hoping to capture their emotion and
subconscious thoughts on canvas.

Abstract Art - The often misunderstood type of art known as abstraction aims
to take subjects from reality but presents them in way that is different from the
way they are viewed in our reality. This may take the form of emphasizing lines,
shapes, or colors that transform the subject into something that is not realistic.
Non-Objective Art- This type of art is often mistaken for Abstract art although it is

entirely different from it. Non-Objective art takes nothing from reality. It is created

purely for aesthetic reasons. The intent of Non-objective art is to use the elements of

art in a way that results in a visually stimulating work showing emotion.

Abstract vs Non Objective

these two kinds of art?

Vocabulary
Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a
scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the
elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance,
the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a
central point and may be similar.

Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewers attention. Usually the artist will make one
area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape,
etc. This could also be considered the focal point of the artwork.

Movement is the path the viewers eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Such
movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art.
A line is an identifiable path created by a point
moving in space. It is one-dimensional and can
vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often
define the edges of an objects. Lines can be
horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or
curved, thick or thin.

Shape is a two dimensional area that is defined

in some way. It can be classified organic or
geometric

Overlapping in art is the placement of objects

over one another in order to create the illusion
of depth.
Lines can cause Emotion...
Thin lines are fragile. They appear easy to break or knock over.

Thick lines suggest strength and give emphasis to nearby elements. Thick lines are bold and make a statement.

Horizontal lines are parallel to the horizon (hence the name). They look like theyre lying down, at rest, asleep.
They suggest calm and quiet, a relaxed comfort.

Vertical lines are perpendicular to the horizon. They are filled with potential energy that could be released if
they were to fall over. Vertical lines are strong and rigid.

Diagonal lines are unbalanced. They are filled with energy. They can appear to be either rising or falling and
convey action and motion. Their energy and apparent movement create tension and excitement.

Curved lines are softer than straight lines. Curved lines express fluid movement. The less active the curve the
calmer the feeling.
Emotion in Color...
Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as
passion and love.

Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, success, and encouragement

Yellow is the color of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.

Green is the color of balance and growth.

Blue is the color of trust and peace.

Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.

Pink is unconditional love and nurturing.

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, and purity.

Black is associated with power, elegance, death, evil, and mystery
