There are over 10,000 ships world-wide and near about 500 registered as Indian flag
vessels. Visiting countries and cities, earning a handsome salary and gaining job
experience all at the same time is a dream of every individual which the merchant navy enables
one to fulfil in a very short span of time. After a period of sea service one can find shore based
employment in a vast number of areas such as various port crafts, ship management,
shipyards, Ship Classification Societies, teaching institutions and the like.
MERI Mumbai, is the oldest maritime training institute in India conforming to the ISO 9001.2008
Quality System and has been rated as a Grade 1 Training Institute by ICRA, a rating agency
approved by the Director General of Shipping, Government of India.
MERI, Mumbai offers fully residential, One year Pre sea training required for Graduates
in Mechanical engineering / Naval Architecture for joining the ships.
Next Batch (26th 2011 Entry) Starts from 02.01.2012.
The course commences in January every year and has the capacity of 120 seats. Of these, as
many seats as possible are filled up by the candidates selected and nominated by various
Shipping Companies.
Seats remaining vacant are filled up by directly inducting candidates. MERI advertises for
these vacant seats during November / December every year. Selection is through merit
and personal interviews. Advertisement may be published in advance if necessary.
Fee structure
The fee for the One year course, at present is ` 3,00,000 (Rupees Three Lakh Only)
and is payable in two instalments. The fee includes tuition, boarding and lodging fees,
uniform expenses and cost of other training facilities. This fee is determined by the
Indian Maritime University (IMU) and approved by the Director General of Shipping,
Government of India and is subject to revision as appropriate and is binding on the cadets.
After the training
After successful completion of their pre sea training and the mandatory four courses the
trainees will have to serve a specified period (at present, the requirement is 6 months for
Graduate Engineers) on board ships and attend preparatory classes prior to appearing in the
Competency Examinations conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) of the
Government of India).
The four basic courses namely PST, PSSR, Fire Fighting and First aid are a must for all
seafarers.
After acquiring the Certificate of Competency in the engineering discipline, one can serve on
board as Certified Officers and can rise to the highest level of Chief Engineer Officer.
One can also persue higher studies in this field, at any stage either after completion of the
courses or while in service.
