1) An engine of mass 500 kg is mounted on an elastic foundation of equivalent
stiffness7x105 N/m. Determine the natural frequency of the system.
2) A wheel is mounted on a steel shaft (G = 83 x109 N/m2) of length 1.5 m and radius 0.80 cm.
The wheel is rotated 5o and released. The period of oscillation is observed as 2.3 s. Determine
the mass moment of inertia of the wheel.

vibration should reduce to one-sixth in one cycle. Find spring stiffness and the damping
coefficient of shock absorber.

9) A mass of 1kg is suspended by a spring passing over the pulley. The system is supported

natural frequency of vibration of a system. Using following data:
Mass of pulley M= 10kg;
Radius of pulley R= 50mm;
Distance of spring from center of pulley r=35mm.

10) Two slabs of isolators, natural rubber and felt, are kept between a solid mass of 10 kg and the
floor as shown in Fig. 5. The natural rubber slab has a stiffness of 3000 N/m and an
equivalent viscous damping coefficient of 100 N-sec/m. The felt slab has a stiffness of 12000
N/m and an equivalent viscous damping coefficient of 330 N-sec/m. Determine the
undamped and the damped natural frequencies of the system in vertical direction. Neglect the
mass ofthe isolators.

1. Explain forced vibration with rotating unbalance.


2. The vibrating system is displayed for vibration characteristics. The total mass of the system is 30
kg. At the speed of 900 rpm, system and eccentric mass have phase difference of 90 oand
corresponding amplitude is 18mm. The eccentric unbalance mass of 1.2 kg has radius of rotation
45mm.
Determine:
a. Natural frequency,
b. Damping factor,
c. Amplitude at 1550 rpm,
d. Phase angle at 1550 rpm.
3. Explain transmissibility and frequency ratio for different damping factors.
4. Define quality factor and state its significance in frequency response curve.
5. The static deflection of an automobile on its spring is 10 cm under. Find the critical speed when
the trailer is traveling over a road with a profile approximated by a sine wave of amplitude 8 cm
and wavelength of 16 m. Assume G=0.84 x 1011 N/m2.
6. Explain significance of force transmissibility versus frequency ratio curve.
7. A machine of 100 kg is supported on spring of total stiffness 700 kN/m and has an unbalanced
rotating element, which results in a disturbing force of 300 N at speed of 2500 rpm. Assuming a
damping factor of 0.25, determine:
a. Amplitude of vibration

8. A motor moving with a speed of 100 kmph has a mass of 1500 kg. It passes over a rough road
which has a sinusoidal surface with amplitude of 75 mm and a wavelength of 5 m. The
suspension system has spring constant of 500 N/mm and damping ratio of 0.5. Determine the
displacement amplitude of the car.
9. Explain the following terms:
a. Vibration isolation
b. Force transmissibility
c. Motion transmissibility
d. Magnification factor
10. A machine weighing 100 kg is supported on 4 springs. It has 80 mm stroke & it runs at 1000
rpm. If the springs are symmetrically placed with respect to C.G. of the machine, neglecting
damping. Determine the combined stiffness of the spring such that the force transmitted to the
foundation is 1/25 times the impressed force.
If it is found that the damping, however small, reduces the amplitude of successive vibrations by
25%, determine:
a. The force transmitted to foundation at 1000 rpm
b. The force transmitted to foundation at resonance
c. The amplitude of vibration at resonance, if weight of the reciprocating parts is 2 kg.
